Bears up and about even in December
12/2019
We visited in December. The helpful lady on reception said that while some bears had already hibernated, some were still active, so we happily paid to enter. Dogs are allowed on a lead. We had a very pleasant peaceful walk through the wooded site, as there were very few visitors. As predicted, we found 2 bears in their wooded enclosures at the end of our loop through the forested site. One new arrival, apparently rescued from captivity in a small space, was still slowly getting used to his new forest area, and was not expected to hibernate this first year in more normal surroundings. He was exhibiting stereotypic pacing behaviour despite having much room to wander; apparently it can take a long time for rescued bears to forget their past experiences. The second bear we saw was obviously much more settled, ignoring us completely while foraging for food beside a pond in his area. It was very good to see bears fairly close up in a wooded habitat.

If you go down to the woods today......

Went there after picking up a leaflet at the local campsite. We saw around 10 bears, including Michal that has his front left lower leg amputated. There is a lot of space (16 Hectares) and the bears are allowed to roam their areas freely. That means you may not see them easily. However, if the bears decide they don't want to play then there are other things there such as information on the different animals you will see in the forest and information about 4 Paws - the rescue charity running the site. It took us about 2 hours to walk around, there are 16 bears there, all of them rescued from poor conditions. Facilities are good, good sized carpark and very close to Plausee so lots of other things to do in the area.

Wonderful serene place to see rescued bears with kids

This park is about an hour and half drive from Berlin - it is beautiful - located in a forest. Right now they are building a nice new visitor's center which will be done later this year. There is ample parking, we had home made soup out of a little snack van and there is a small gift shop and clean bathrooms. Every bear that lives here was rescued from a bad situation and they have signs that tell you a little bit about them. The actual space for the bears is amazing - large with trees and hills and places for them to swim - they can also get away from people. The park features a lot of educational information about the bears and how much they eat and cost and how they live. It also educates visitors about what it means for bears to be kept in captivity. We saw about seven bears - some were sleeping, some were swimming, some were playing. It is quite impressive to see such beautiful creatures up close without feeling like you are invading their privacy. It is a nice walk around the park and they have a fantastic play ground for kids, a maze in which you answer questions about bears to find your way out, a bridge with animal sounds - kids get to guess which animal makes them and a great slide at the end. They have a mock hibernation den too. Our daughter who is seven loved it there. We found it quite peaceful and nice to see these bears get to live out the rest of their lives in such a wonderful place after having such difficult lives before. Thanks for Four Paws for all of their hard work. This was a relaxing way to spend a Sunday with our family - highly recommended.

Nice large park with much space for the bears

The bears live in fairly large park like areas and are hence able to hide themselves. It may actually take a while to spot a bear.

We went to the Bärenwald thinking that maybe we can see a bear, and we saw 11, means almost all of them, some of them sleeping, other ones in the little river which cross the forest, and other playing. A nice place to go with children.

Hit or miss.

When we visited we only saw 4 bears, one of them fast asleep and the other three in the distance. This park is probably worth while if you have all day to wait for the bears to show up. When you only have an hour or two you have to be lucky. Although the bears have a lot of space and everything looks very natural you have to ask the question why the bears are locked up and not free. It doesn't make sense to lock them up while they are hardly visible anyhow. All together not worth the trip for us.

Dear visitor, It's too bad you didn't have enough time to fully enjoy the sanctuary. While walking around, you can get a lot of background information about the bears such as: All of the bears living at our sanctuary have been held under terrible conditions in captivity until we could free them. Bears which have been in captivity cannot be reintroduced to the wild. They become dependent on humans and would not survive in the wilderness. Here at our sanctuary the bears can revert to their animal instincts, enjoy their natural behavioral patterns and hopefully forget about their past. Our visitors can witness how the bears explore the forest, how they look for food, go for a swim, interact with other bears - and, well yes, how they relax and sleep as well. Best regards!
