Stunning views on a lovely trail!
8/2020
We hiked the Torre De Los Horcados Rojos trail (PR-PNPE-23) which was about 9km at the end of August. Starting early at just after 9am it was not so hot and there were few people on the trail. We got to appreciate the views from afar with the low cloud over the mountains. We made the mistake of taking too many layers with us. It felt cold queuing for the cable car at the bottom so we assumed it would be colder at the top. Actually when the sun came out it was very hot so we ended up wearing shorts and a t-shirt and carrying our jeans, fleases and anoraks in our backpack. There are lovely views on that trail which is well maintained. We stopped for lunch at the junction to Refugio Cabana Veronica before continuing on to a lovely viewpoint. After the hike we walked an extra couple of kilometres or so to look at the Heidi house from afar. This day trip surpassed our expectations!

Amazing!

There was snow in September that turned this from being just stunning to being truly outstanding! The footpaths were very well maintained but you are on the top of mountains so wear sensible walking gear.

The top of the Picos de Europa mountains. Set in a beautiful gorgeous valley in the top of the mountains. We hit it in early May and were amazed at all the snow. Wonderful vistas.

Spectacular

The views were just amazing. My wife and I sat for hours with a picnic just soaking up the sun and the views. We managed to find a secluded spot and chilled. A real experience.

Inefficient queueing system!!! Sort it out...
8/2017 • Perhe
The scenery is fantastic but the process to get the cable car is slow, tortuous and inefficient. We arrived at 10, which is when the website says that it opens, in fact this is wrong, it opens at 9! We then queued for 1.5 hours to buy our tickets only to be told at the cash desk that we now need to wait 2 hours until our allocated cable car!!! So our planned day of walking was rendered impossible... there was no information available at any point to explain any of this - all in all a very disappointing experience...

Wow, what a sight
7/2017 • Kaverit
We booked the hotel nearby the car-cable (Parador) and it was very convenient for us to walk few meters to the entrance of the Car-cable. We made a round trip (i.e. up and down by car cable and a round tour inside the mountains). A day in advance we went to the village nearby and bought some food for a picnic at the supermarket. Thus, after our breakfast at the hotel we took our bags (within the picnic products) and used the car cable. I must admit that seeing the slope of the car cable was a very frightening feeling, even that I was told that there was no accident of the car-cable (Yet....).
I must say that we did not have to wait (due to the early hour?) and we climbed to the mountain. We took the walking course to the hotel (yes, there is a hotel inside the mountain) and after an hour of walking (we are not young anymore), we reached to the hotel cafeteria and made our picnic outside with a wonderful view. After finishing the food it was time to climb back to the car-cable station. Their time estimation was completely wrong (it was written 40 minutes and we climbed twice that time). When we reached to the station, we enjoy their cafeteria and then went down (again a frightening experience).
Three important points for enjoying your trip at the mountain
One: You need a good walking shoes (or hiking ones)
Two: You need to bring water (and a hat) since when the sun appears you will need that
Three: You need to stick to their walking course inside the mountain, there are people who live there.
We enjoyed our visit there so much,
Let's hope you will enjoy as we did.

Arrive early
7/2017 • Pariskunnat
If you don't want to spend hours queuing then arrive before it opens. We didn't the first time and with 1.5 hours to wait decided to do Pr25 which is a fabulous if challenging walk around and over the mountain , eventually coming out on the mountain to the left of the cable car.
The second time we got there at 845 and we're up the mountain by 930. Really annoying queuing system where some of the party queue for the cable car whilst the others get tickets- we walked past about 20 people in the queue for the cable car who were still awaiting their tickets to arrive. You get your tickets over by the cafe.
Once up we chose to walk the route down which was excellent. The walking is on the farm roads so nothing too challenging and then we headed into Espinima and Pido for the route back into Fuente de Walked about 11 miles in total and took ages as we kept stopping to look at the fantastic views!!!!!

Fabulous day up this mountain but not for the inexperienced walker
6/2017 • Pariskunnat
It is at least 3 hours up and over 2 hours down without allowing any time for pictures or rests. A superb trek but unrelelnting up hill with a very steep zig zag route up unstable ground for last 800 feet with some exposure. " very small scrambles of 7 feet or so at top especially to reach second top.For the experienced walker with a head for heights a superb expedition.

Beautiful area with great views
5/2017 • Pariskunnat
Fuente De is about 25km from Potes driving through beautiful scenery along a very smooth road.
The car park at Fuente De is free for both cars and motorhomes. It is an excellent place to stop and explore the area. The cable car to the top of the mountain is fast and smooth. At the top there is a nice café with lovely views over the mountains.
From the cable car station there are a number of walking routes to take and if you haven't booked a return ticket you can walk back down the mountain to the car park. (it suggests it is about a 4 hour hike.)

360 degree view -- you can see as far as the sea from the top --- once you reach a valley, climb 150 mts of rock to get all the way up --- bring your lunch and have it at the top --- and also layers of thin clothing as temps vary substantially

Buenas tardes ,

Is there transport from the Hotel to the top of the mountain, if so can you book this in advance, or can you just drive up.

The road stops just beyond the Hotel, at the lower cable car station. The cable car takes you to near the top of the mountain. I am not sure if you can pre book.

We are traveling in May from Santillana del Mar to Leon. Would this attraction be enroute between the 2 towns?
What would the distances be in miles?
Thanks

Yes, it would be a good alternative route to drive via Fuente De when traveling from Santillana del Mar to Leon. The total distance is about 175 miles but the road through the Picos mountains is very slow. You really need to allow up to half a day to enjoy the cable car and mountains so it would be a good idea to stay the night at Potez.

Do we need to book in advance for cable car trips for school holiday dates (am thinking August 2016), or do we just turn up and queue? Any advice appreciated. Paticularly, if we have to book any website guidance would be much appreciated. We have gone up on the Cable car before (pre-children) and it was absolutely fantastic, so want to return and show the kids!! thanks

We went up in early June and there was no queue. We were told by the locals that in August you could queue for an hour or more and that it is advisable to arrive as early as possible to have best chance of shorter queues. I don't think it is possible to book in advance but not certain.
