Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The castle occupies a very prominent position above the beach, but it’s closed at the moment. However, there’s a quite a bit of history attached to it, and a famous legend too. The Drosoulites are a ghost army, reputedly shadowy like figures who appear on the anniversary of the Battle of Frangokastello, 1828, during the Greek War of Independence. Just make sure you're not in the vicinity at dawn on a misty warning - that's when the Drosoulites are reputed to put in an appearance!!
There are statues of heroic Cretan resistance fighters nearby, so try to take a look at them while you're there.

The castle is impressive and the only reason I have reviewed at as "average" is because it s being restored and we were only able to walk around the outside.
This was in September 2022 and it looked as if the work was almost completed as we could peek around the entrance and could see the final paving was being put in place.
Would expect it to be ready for next summer!
The surrounding area is so flat so the castle is a real landmark

I popped in on way to beach at about 4pm. The site was not busy so I was able to roam around taking my time to soak up the atmosphere. There is a lot of repair/restoration going on at present which is a good thing.

It is being done up just now (end of May 2022) so you can only see the outside. Not worth the trip until the repairs are finished.

4.9.2020 We drove in the direction from Chania ( + 38 °C) far enough to find the castle closed and under reconstruction. There was no mention of it on the Internet. It's pretty unfair to tourists, lost half a day. For the next time, it would like to better inform the public about whether the castle is open. Otherwise, the fortress looks very impressive. With the word "Castle" you create other expectations. In fact this old Venetian fortress is a well preserved shell of a castle, so in fact it are ruins. Despite that it is impressive (though small in size) and nicely situated, overlooking two beaches.

For me, this is one of the best preserved fortresses in Crete. Unfortunately, at the moment, is under renovation, so a lot of scaffolding. But worth a visit!

The Castle of Frangokastello is a very beautiful Castle from a far, but on close inspections the Castle needs a lot of renovation and TLC. We Brits are lucky we have the National Trust which looks after our Ancient Houses, Castles etc. we have come to realise that we need to look after our history for future generations so they can be proud of there history. This Castle will be eventually lovingly restored in the future and at the moment just needs to be lovingly restored to its former splender. The castle was built by the Venetians in 1371-74 and was captured by the Turks or the Ottomans in 1828 and the rest is history. The castle is near to the beach a natural beach of beauty. You can visit the Castle and then put on you bathing costume and enjoy the tranquil waters while viewing the castle. You can get a bite to eat at the local Taverna or just have a nice pleasant drink it is up to you.
