18th C Pentagonal fort with prison museum.

We drove a rental car 24 km northeast from our Downtown Oasis Guesthouse, crossing over the 1 mile Suriname Bridge and arriving here at 11AM. After paying $2 US each at the entry, we strolled along the fort's earthen walls, seeing military artifacts along the way to the Gunpowder Storage, Carriage House, Plantation House and finally the Prison. This facility had concrete cells and other rooms with displays of the varied immigrant cultures (many descriptions in Dutch) that make up the present day Suriname citizenship.
Driving 6 km east to add the 1882 Marienburg 'suikerfabriek' ruins made for an interesting morning tour.

Nice interesting walk around

Worth a visit. The area is dotted with interesting sites, about the fort, plantations and allot of information of the people of Suriname in the central buildings. Beside the paths are many types of plants and we did see several birds around.

The boat ride was exciting to the Fort. Its a very big area with trees, buildings, historic sights and a very interesting and friendly guide.
If you love nature and history, my advice is to pay the Fort a visit

Beautiful Location but can do more with history.

It is a beautiful spot to visit for a walk around to indulge in the history of suriname. However thats where it needs some improvement. Actually showing the history of Suriname. Great to combine this trip with also traveling to Marienburg or a boat ride to Fredericksdorp.

Great open air museum

The Fort wasn’t officially open when we visited, but we sneaked in a side gate. Plenty of information in Dutch and English about the historical buildings. Very poignant display in one house of the horrendous slave trade. In the former prison there was excellent information on the different people who were brought to Suriname or migrated here. Virtually all travelled from far away. Excellent museum, highly recommend to all visiting Suriname.

Worth a Visit

Arrived by boat and an easy 5 minute walk up to the Fort. Its spread out over a wide area and there are quite a lot of buildings to visit in site. The section on plantations and different ethnic populations is interesting. Visit would have been enhanced by English text.

if you are a history fan then you will love it here. The buildings are well kept and there are signs explaining the history of each place.

Nice visit for an afternoon

This is petty far from the city and we got here by a hired car.

The fort wall itself is gone but some old buildings remain.

A good half day-trip.

Interesting place

We enjoyed walking around this park visiting historical buildings, admiring canons, and simply being outdoors & admiring the river across us.
I was pleasantly surprised to see several giant lily pads in one of the lotus ponds. This pond looked way too small for the lily pads.

We also had a little picnic in this park.

Fort, Prison, Museum

In a strategic location at the confluence of the rivers Suriname and Commewijne was built in the 18th century a fort, called Nieuw Amsterdam, to protect the plantations further inland. It was built as a pentagon with 5 bastions, of which remains can still be seen.

Later the fort was turned into a prison and finally into an open-air-museum, which usually gets visited on an organised Commewijne Boat Tour. For us it was our last stop before going back to the pier near Paramaribo.
