Keep Climbing!

Fascinating ancient cemetery overlooking Menton old town and the sea. A challenging walk, especially on a rainy day, but so worth the effort. Tranquil and fascinating.

Views to die for

Keep climbing up the narrow passageways and stairways in the Old Town and you will eventually reach the remains of the old castle, and the cemetery now located in these grounds. The walk itself is very attractive. There are some very fancy crypts and graves, even a huge chapel with the onion-topped roof where a Russian prince is entombed. Many of the graves have incredible views out over the Mediterranean Sea. A large number of foreigners are buried here, residents or visitors during the Belle Epoche. The founder of the game of Rugby, William Webb Ellis, is supposed to be buried here, but there is no indication on the map at the entrance that shows where he is, exactly. I walked and walked around looking for his tomb, but I couldn’t find it. There was a section of the cemetery barricaded off following problems with stability after heavy rains a few months ago – perhaps it was there?

Webb Ellis grave not accessible
2/2020 • Pariskunnat
Super views over the bay. Parking on the road adjacent to the cemetery avoids people with mobility issues having to walk up the hill from the town centre. Very disappointed to find some engineering works taking place which prevented access to the famous Webb Ellis grave section of the cemetery. For those interested, Webb Ellis is buried in the section of cemetery to the right of the main entrance. It is signposted by a small blue sign but only once you're in the correct section - which is not at all obvious until you're virtually on top of the grave!

A must visit
1/2020 • Pariskunnat
Absolutely try to see this place. I guarantee it will provide a memorable highlight of any trip to Menton. The views are stunning in both directions - I think this is the most beautifully situated cemetery I have ever been to in my life. Of course it’s also sad, as many came in search of a cure to TB and died young. I’ve also never seen so many British people buried in a foreign cemetery. It’s worth every step uphill even if you are not making the pilgrimage to see Webb Ellis’s grave.

Definitely visit!

It's a beautiful cemetery looking over the city. It is definitely worth the walk up. There are a few entrances so if one is locked, look for the other. The entrance closer to the observation deck (12 Boulevard de Garavan, 06500 Menton) was the one we entered.

Atmospheric and good views of Menton
10/2019
After navigating the claustrophobic maze of streets in old Menton breaking out to the picturesque old cemetery on the top of the hill is a surprise. Winding on and up brings you to lovely views of the bay and also hills behind Menton, set against a foreground of ornate statues and tombs.

Great view - don’t miss it!

Well, you have to walk up hill for about 20 minutes, but it’s worth it. The view over entire Menton and all the way to Italy is great.

A Bit of a climb but worth it
7/2019
This is a great place to visit especially if you are interested in find out the different people who lived in the area. There are a wide variety of nationalities buried here, included Webb Ellis who invented rugby, his plaque is on one of the entrance gates. The views from here are stunning and well worth the walk up the steep climb.

One of the best Sunrise in the City
2/2019 • Soolomatka
I thought by the Church I will get a good view of Sunrise but actually if you walk to the highest point of the cemetary, there is a beautiful outlook with benches beside the top gate, worth every step to see this view! Ps: don't bother if it is cloudy. check sunrise depending on seasons, but in feb its about 7am, skies change from pink and the sun comes out from the sea! Magical! Surprised nobody comes here to see it! In summer cemetary only opens at 8am so either wait an hour or come back after. Also, walking down the little streets you can see locals in their little houses, with winding stairs. Not recommended if you have bad knees or cannot walk properly.
