The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Schöneberg
In 1963, Schöneberg was the centre of the political west, inspiring John F. Kennedy to choose this area to famously announce, "Ich bin ein Berliner." Times may have changed, but modern-day Schöneberg still pays tribute to its historical legacies. Once the richest city outside of Berlin proper, the area's affluent past is still visible in ornate housing facades dating back to the Gründerzeit of the 19th century, while residents in fur coats walking their dogs or shopping in high-end KaDeWe continue the tradition with a modern flair. Schöneberg was also once the centre of the decadent and burlesque nightlife of the 1920s. It was here that Marlene Dietrich partied with Christopher Isherwood and the first gay bar in Germany was founded. Today, the gay community still revolves around Nollendorfplatz. The overground Ubahn station is even illuminated in rainbow colors, paying tribute to Schöneberg's progressive past.

We went with good friends as they did their Saturday shopping for fruits, vegetables, and meats. This was such an amazing market. Not only did they have fruits, vegetables, they had all sorts of other things to keep you occupied. If you want to see Berliner‘s in their natural environment, this is it! It’s it’s 9 o’clock and make sure you bring your appetite as there is so much food to eat. And bring your wallet as there is so much else to buy as well.

It is a nice big farmer's market on Saturdays. Great variation of fresh vegetables, meat, fish and stalls for snacks. The atmosphere in that suburb is nice - grab a coffee and watch the market.

This is much bigger than the Wittenbergplatz market. It's mostly food-oriented, with good produce, seafood and meats, and a few bakeries, like the excellent Lindner. A fine warm weather outing.

Granted went on a Wednesday in late January and at 10am but there were literally a dozen stalls selling flowers, cheese, bakery products and fruit n veg with a couple of eateries. Bought a nice pastry but took us 5 mins before we went on our travels a little wiser not to visit again.

Been here on the odd occasion as it's just at the end of the road to family. It's not a large market, but the time we visited they had some nice food stalls to buy food from.

This is a midsize farmers market and what I liked about it is that there’s a good variety and not too many endless repeating vegetables stands like you might find in the big markets.

Every type of stand is of top quality. Be sure to check the fish and the bread stands!

Our family of 4- including our two kids 10 and 8- really enjoyed this market. It was fun to see all the vendors and to eat a great lunch made up of many things from various vendors. There is a decent amount of seating. We had wished we had made note of better directions once we got off the subway- the market is a bit tucked away.

I managed to visit this market on Saturday afternoon and found delicious food (and aromatic coffee) and crafts (even chocolate) while I cannot and need not buy fresh fish, meat, cheese, sausages, flowers and vegetables. It was on a cold October day, there was sheep skins and lots of delightful footwear for winter nights.

We have been down to the market twice now and both times we have really enjoyed the ambiance and all the vendors. There are too many to try and rate here, but we did enjoy the fresh pasta we bought as well as some fresh bread. However, that really doesn't say much because there are tons of vendors here. The one that had the longest line both weekends was the fresh fish guy. It seemed like that was where all the locals were lined up at least.

BONUS: If you come by here with kids, make sure to head just south and across the street to the rubber playground. It is truly one-of-a-kind and a lot of fun. I would try to explain it, but trust me it is fun for all kids and only about a 1 min walk from the market. Just head towards the church on the left side and you will see it set back a bit from the road on the left. Or just follow the sound of the kids laughing and playing.
