Had a great day out visiting Albayzin. Only the two of us on the tour as others had been delayed. Our guide (sorry forgotten his name but he was from Cuba) was very informative advised us regarding the history of Albayzin and made restaurant recommendations as we went around the area

We were fortunate to stay in this area
Our bedroom looked over the street and had two balconies. On arrival with the doors thrown open the afternoon sun shone in, along with the chatter from the small shops below clustered together like a "souk" and the distinct aroma of Middle Eastern food.  Tempted to explore further we ventured out on a spontaneous walk of these old cobbled streets where traffic is restricted to early morning deliveries and the odd taxi. There are many tourist shops which to be honest blend in together after a while but equally some beautiful narrow streets that just invite further exploration. It’s hard not to imagine days of old when these streets would have been teeming with merchants and townsfolk all going about their business. The old city walls can also be found in this area along with the Mirador de San Nicolas which is a view not to be missed.

    Fascinating Historic Site
On our recent trip to Granada, our two family couples visited the Albaicín, aka Albayzín, a hillside neighborhood located on the north side of the Darro River which passes through the city. It is noted for its historic monuments and 13th to 15th century medieval street plan, which considering the multiple centuries passed, hasn't changed too much. In 1994, it became a World Heritage Site, an extension of the historic site of the nearby Alhambra. A fascinating historic site.

    Fascinating part of Granada
We were lucky enough to be staying in this area which is on the hillside opposite the Alhambra. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and full of narrow cobbled streets, old houses and churches and you will find lots of restaurants and some tourist shops nearer to the city centre. There are lots of gardens that you can see through railings and this is where you will find the Mirador de San Nicolas from which you can get a fantastic view of the Alhambra. It's a steep climb to the top but well worth it.

    Beautiful part of Granada!
You can’t visit Granada without visiting the Albayzin Neighborhood. Albayzin, was the historic Moorish Quarter of the city, known for its Islamic influence. It is a beautiful part of the city with great views of the Alhambra. I highly recommend!

It was definitely worth to visit the neighborhood. Mirador and the narrow alleys, and you can remember some time at the past muslims and jews were living there by strolling the streets.

Very cute neighborhood with rice history that you can still explore today. Many cute cafes, restaurants, and Arab markets with a wide variety of authentic souvenirs.

Also make sure to find a good mirador to see it from afar!

We booked a private tour of this beautiful old city and enjoyed hearing about the amazing history as we walked the stoned streets with the intriguing alleyways and the infrequent aroma of freshly cooked pastries. Worth the visit

In case you were living under a rock, Alabacín (or Albayzin as it’s listed in TripAdvisor) holds great historical significance as one of the oldest and most well-preserved neighborhoods of Moorish architecture in all of Spain. Thus, if you happen to be in Granada, the Alabacín district is THE place to walk. Its origins can be traced back to the Nasrid dynasty, which ruled the Emirate of Granada during the 13th to 15th centuries, and Cherry Wonderdog saw plenty of signs of its origins during our three-night stay in May 2023. Albayzin's layout, with its narrow winding streets and traditional white houses, reflects the cultural exchange and coexistence of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities during the Islamic period in Spain.

We loved this area and visited it at different times, day and night. Of course, our hotel was based here so it was hard to avoid the area, but we also made a special attempt to slow down and admire the region's rich multicultural history.and beauty. Another tactic that proved quite useful was to take a bike tour to cover more ground and get the inside scoop from someone knowledgeable of key places to visit. (See TopSegway & TourBike Granada). One of the highlights of our visit was watching the sunset with beer in hand and Alhambra in view. Cherry Wonderdog strongly recommends Alabacín and hope you have a great time in the wonderful city of Granada.

Nice neighborhood from which it is possible to see the Alhambra. I liked a lot the small streets and the squares of the churches. I loved a lot the shops and restaurant at the bottom of the hill forming the Albayzin.
