Once Shocking Satan Sculpture
2/2020
This is an intriguing sculpture, mainly because it’s the only one in the world to make the devil its main subject. It might have lost the power to shock now but it was extremely controversial when it was designed in 1878. It remained controversial for many years. Feelings ran high and at one time, there was a plan to erect a statue nearby of the Virgin Mary, to counteract or neutralise the effect of this monument.

No one is really sure why Bellver, the sculptor, chose the devil as his subject. It definitely wasn’t some sort of devil worship and it wasn't a tribute to Satan. Instead it seems that he was inspired by John Milton’s famous Paradise Lost and the story of the devil being expelled from the Garden of Eden.

The sculpture shows the moment when he has been thrown out of Paradise. Beaten and banished, he falls backwards, reeling from the shock. His wings are outstretched one arm is thrown up, defensively to his head and his mouth is open in a soundless scream. Has he just been struck down by God? Has he just landed in hell?

Snakes wrap themselves about his legs and arm and at the base, a series of demon heads hold serpents, snakes and lizards in their claws.

Paradise Lost by Milton
10/2020
This is a nice statue, but I don't like the meaning behind: a monument dedicated to the devil. It was built in 1877. I prefer to think that it is a statue in honor of Paradise Lost by Milton.

48 hours in Madrid. Day 2. Part 11
12/2018
An intriguing fact about Madrid is that it is the only city in the world with a monument dedicated to the Devil. This was the reason we took the long walk from Sol to visit the Retiro Park. Standing at a roundabout near the rose garden, the sculpture represents the Fallen Angel at the moment of being expelled from Paradise.

It is the work of Ricardo Bellver, who sculpted it in 1878 for the Universal Exhibition of Paris that same year. Subsequently, it was acquired by the Madrid City Council. It was put on a pedestal with statues of demons, lizards, fishes and snakes and a fountain around it.

The monument was officially opened in 1885. It is renowned for its dramatic appeal, the tension in the expression and its ambiguity in treating a polemical subject that caused turmoil regarding its possible interpretation as a satanic tribute. Taking photos during the late afternoon adds a lot more color to the depicted devil as the setting sun casts its golden light on the monument.

It is no coincidence that it happens to stand at 666 meters above sea level.

Very cool statue of the falling angel "Lucifer"
9/2019
Found in Retiro park is a nice looking statue of the falling angel Lucifer. It has this controversial kind of vibe surrounding it since most of Spain's residents are strong believers of the Christian faith but it does go hand-in-hand with the story of Lucifer.

Cool and spooky .
9/2019 • Kaverit
Monumento Del Angel Caido is one of the most fascinating and at the same time spooky monuments in Madrid, its certainly one of the most unique and is to my knowledge the only public monument to the dev.
Cast in 1877 and exhibited in 1878 ,the sculpture by Ricardo Bellver shows the fallen angel tumbling from grace, inspired by Milton's Paradice Lost ,its a wonderful and well detailed statue, very photogenic and makes for some great photographic opportunities ,the row of little devil disciples that surround the base of the fountain look awesome and eerily enough the monument and fountain stands exactly 666 metres above sea level,666 being the number of the beast, its a beautiful fountain In Madrids most beautiful and flamboyant park namely Parque Del Retiro and is most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a holiday to Madrid and planning on visiting the park.

Monumento del Angel Caido is a beautiful bronze sculpture. It was made in the 1870s and won some awards too. It is on public display in Retiro Park. It's in a perfect spot, surrounded by nature. Should have a look at it if you are in or near the park.

Dramatic Fountain
4/2019 • Soolomatka
Inside Retiro Park is this curious statue of the Fallen Angle of all figures.

The statue takes it's inspiration from Paradise Lost depicting the literal moment of Lucifer's expulsion from the garden of Eden, his anguish evident on his face. The statue sits atop a pedestal in the centre of a fountain. At the base of the pedestal are gargoyles and demons spouting water from their mouths hence the alternative name of Fountain of the Fallen Angel.
