Comfortable way to get around
5/2019
The Cercanias were for me, more comfortable than the normal metro trains. Perhaps also because they tend to head towards less densely populated parts of the city.

What a nightmare!

NO trains? we arrived at the airport T4 and needed a train to Chamartin, there were absolutly no trains going because of a technical problem! We had to take the metro, and almost missed our train. ("luckily" the train was delayed)

One week later, we had to go from Chamartin to T4 airport, what a mess, none of the automatic ticket machines worked to get a ticket! so everybody waiting in line at de desk for a ticket, again we almost missed the plane.

Ah, and all this on a very hot day with a baby and 3 suitcases!

Easy and convenient
12/2018
The Cercanias will take you to a large part of Spain, lots of people use it as form of commuting into the city for work and out, it can get crowded during rush hour. Its easy to use and clean. Definitely the best way to travel if going outside of Madrid for a day trip.

Smooth and efficient trip

I took the Cercanias from Barajas to Chamartin station. The staff at the information desk was really helpful, ticketing and everything was straightforward. This is different from the Metro and has a separate fare, and is sort of like a "express" commuter train that goes to the center of Madrid and beyond, depending on which route you are taking (there are 10 routes in total). The waits may be longer sometimes, but it's fast, clean and comfortable.

No complaints!

As has been previously mentioned, Cercanias are not the same as the Metro. They generally go a bit farther out. They're fairly clean and quite efficient. I was staying in Atocha, so, it was convenient for me to take the Cercania from T4 directly to Atocha (C1 and C10). If you don't have a card, this way is probably the cheapest and quickest way to get to town. It takes about 25 minutes.

The other time I took it was to Getafe, again, without any problems and with plenty of seats. They are generally less full than the metro.

Efficient and quick trains in Madrid
12/2017 • Perhe
Cercanias are not the Metro system (or the Metro-Lite). They connect a wide area across Madrid, including the airport to the city. We stayed at a hotel near the airport and took the cercanias into the city every day.

Trains are frequent, regular and reliable. I found them clean an comfortable without the crowds often encountered on the metro.

Tip: The cercanias is included on the ticket if you take a high-speed Renfe AVE train to other places in Spain.

Essential Train System
12/2016 • Soolomatka
The Cercanias trains cover a good bit of Madrid, including a circle route in the center of the city. This is the best way, btw, to get to and from the Madrid-Barajas Airport, imo. It's clean, reliable, quick and efficient. Remember this, if you are traveling from the airport to the Renfe-Ave trains with destinations elsewhere in Spain: The Cercanias is FREE! Just show your Renfe-Ave train ticket at the small ticket Renfe booth in Terminal 4, or use one of the automated machines nearby (you enter a code on the top left of your ticket) and you get a free boleto to stick in the entry machines to the station adjacent to the ticketing area! It's easy to get help from workers in the area, if you don't understand the system. It takes about 15 minutes to get to Chamartin, or about 20 to get to the Atocha stations where the Renfe/Ave trains depart.

Commuter style train
6/2015 • Liikematka
this train was different from the metro. It was more of a commuter style train. google maps had us take this train in addition to the metro to get to Puerta del Sol, but you can stay on the metro instead and get there just the same.
