Top ways to experience Duomo Rooftops
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

- nasty KEurope140 contributionsAn indescribable feeling 😍Your visit to the Duomo di Milano is not complete without going up to the roof of the cathedral. You can go up on foot or by elevator. Be sure to go! Firstly, the view of the city is simply magical. And secondly, the roof of the cathedral is a whole city with its passages, squares, secret corners. The roof of the Duomo di Milano is a separate story and an indescribable feeling.Visited July 2023Written 22 August 2023

There is quite a bit of restoration work going on, but there is still plenty to see. I was very short on time so booked the express lift. There was only around 1 minute of waiting. By contrast the walk down the stairs was slow, crowded and hot. If that's what walking up is like too then it wouldn't be fun.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 September 2023
- neuromonBoston, Massachusetts48 contributionsTop spot in MilanA great way to see the central square below, and immensely rewarding in its own right- endless carvings and intricate stonework to scrutinize for hidden details. You get a much more comprehensive understanding of this grand cathedral- don’t miss! But buy tickets well in advance, as the lines are long and they will sell out.Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 September 2023
- vigirl808New York City, New York8 contributionsGreat experienceWe went to Milan and had a wonderful time. Before you go you must do your research. This is not the United States. Traveling around by train and buses is the way to go. Cabs are very expensive and you don’t need to have Euros before you leave. I would suggest to just use your credit card and keep track of your budget. All in all do your research before you leave and try to buy as many train tickets and excision before you leave.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 October 2023
- Lisa DAustralia123 contributionsDuomo di Milano rooftopsStunning experience. We purchased directly from the Duomo Di Milan website rather than guided tours. All very simple to navigate. We went for the 9am time slot as there are less crowds earlier in the day. Our ticket covered the lift access up to the rooftops, entrance to the cathedral, and access to the museum. Watch out for scammers (people approaching and offering to take your photo) and pickpockets. The rooftop of the cathedral was wonderful. Amazing views, architecture, and history. Even with the lift up there are still many stairs so not great for people with impaired mobility (maybe they have other options though). The cathedral was very beautiful and impressive. The museum had many sculptures and more information regarding the cathedral. All up it took us around 2 hours.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023

Fabulous visit & we were lucky to have a bright sunny day. Took the lift up to the top & then slowly walked across the roof before taking the stairs down. Fabulous views & an amazing experience. - Bev0199Leeds, United Kingdom83 contributionsAmazing stonework and wonderful city viewsReally well organised, so much to see and the ease of a lift to take you up. You get a scheduled time so it isn't outrageously busy (or at least it wasn't in late September). The views of the city are amazing, but the best bit is getting up close to the actual building and the amazing ornately carved stone. You have to walk back down and it is is a lot of steps. We got behind an elderly couple who were finding the stairs quite hard. I expect in the middle of summer when it is busy, the journey to get down the stairs might take quite a while. The duomo itself it absolutely beautiful and if you're afraid of heights or can't do the stairs going down, then it is worth just visiting the duomo itself without the rooftops.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 January 2024

I ve been to Milano previously and visited cathedral on the inside but never got the chance and time to visit its’ rooftoop. Wow, it’s definitely worth every effort, it left me speechless. Such an amazing sight worth every minute of time spent there. Lovely view! You can see all the details of the Duomo tops and all the city. Perfect time is when the sun sets. We took the lift and went down by the stairs. It’s not too hard to take the stairs.

Walking the rooftop of a cathedral amongst its glorious spires is definitely a one-in-a-million experience and the Milan Duomo is probably one of the very few cathedrals that offer such amazing experience. We bought the Terraces by Lift tickets for €15 (€2 pricier compared to Staircase) and after queueing for about 20 minutes, we were hoisted up to the terrace in a small lift. The uneven sloping surface of the cathedral’s rooftop made the experience of navigating through the terrace more exhilarating. The vantage views of the surrounding buildings and modern skyscrapers in the distance amidst the spires is one sight to behold. The descent is via the spiral staircase which is not as daunting. Best to be there early morning to avoid the queue for this not-to-be-missed experience!

Hello - I understand a pre-purchased ticket is valid for a three day period (so if I purchase on March 10, for example, I can go until March 12), but why is there a timestamp selection? If I select a time, am I committed to that time or can I still go at anytime? I am interested in the terraces as well.

I am planning to buy the Milano Pass with Duomo ticket, can anyone please confirm whether the pass gives access to the terrace by stairs or by lift.
I understand that a lift ticket can be used to get to the rooftop terraces of Milan's Duomo, but I've read that you can take the lift to go back down - and that you have to take the stairs. Does anyone know definitively is that is true? Thank you?

I would like to go to the Rooftops and inside the Duomo. How long will that take?
Can I leave the Complex and come back the same day or the next day (always within the 3 day ticket period)?

Hello. Approximately how long does it take to wait at the queue for the rooftop lift if you have bought the ticket online in advance?

We did not have a long to wait when we arrived at our designated time as the queue was very short. Entry was organised very efficiently.

C’è tanta coda in biglietteria?

Grazie
I would like to buy the tickets online, do anyone know the difference on below ticket categories?

I think the TA'er below has answered your question. It's well worth visiting the rooftop of the Duomo, and it's great that there is a lift. The best time of day to visit would be around 4.00 pm, when the crowds have started to disperse. Still lots of people around, of course, but much less than during the morning and first part of the afternoon. Well, that was our experience anyway!

Hi I'm going to Milan and have limited time and would like to do the rooftop of the cathedral. I have a brief window to do it. Could you tell me exactly where you purchase your ticket and the entrance to the lift? I may have time after 5:30 on Friday, April 25, Sat 26 after 5:30 or Sunday at 9 AM. I also wonder whether they are open on Sunday morning given the services. Is the entrance separate from the church entrance? Thanks.

Facing the doors to the cathedral, the shop for the tickets is to the right, about 1/3 the length of the cathedral. You can buy tickets to just the rooftop (terrasses). If you have a credit it debit card that is chip+pin you can purchase from the self service kiosks otherwise get a number at the desk as you enter them wait your turn to be called. Using the kiosk saves time ... a lot of time. When we bought tix In January only 3 numbers advanced while we used a kiosk, the number we got just in case we had cc issues was 30-some numbers higher than the one being served.
Definitely pay the extra for the lift, well worth it and shorter line. The lift/elevator is on the diagonal opposite of the cathedral tourist entrance. That’s a long line with barriers on the left side of the cathedral (again looking from the large piazza facing the 5 doors)- this is the climbers line. The lift line is shorter and near the “back” still on the left side.
All of this was in January when scaffolding was on the left side. Access to the right side left was closed. They are(we’re?) doing extensive renovations to the decorative carvings on the roof.
Enjoy your visit - very cool to see the carvings up close and great views!
