Neighbourhood: Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

- NoraatcSudbury, Massachusetts35,558 contributionsThe oldest religious monument in FlorenceI bought the Ghiberti’d pass, which includes three sights: Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Santa Riparata and Battistero (the latter was closed until December 18th, but I have seen the interior on my previous trips many times, so no big deal). The pass is usable over the course of three consecutive days. The Ghiberti’s doors are in the nearby Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, the Battistero’s copy is excellent but I would strongly recommend to see the original, where you can clearly see the details of his masterpiece. The white and green marble of the octagonal Battistero’s exterior of the octagonal Battistero harmoniously blends with the same colors of the Duomo. creating a truly magnificent ensemble. The Battistero dates back to 1059 and is considered to be the oldest religious monument of Firenze.Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 5 April 2023

Wasn't much to see or read about. Maybe better if visited with a guide. Otherwise, it's not a big site after one walk around the interior you're all set.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 September 2023

There are lots of people in and around it. The doors are very famous with the Old Testament stories depicted on the panels.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 September 2023

Ghiberti's gold-drenched "Gates of Paradise". The immediate excitement of seeing them at point-blank was somewhat diminished by discovering they are not the originals (understandably you couldn’t have such priceless, high art originals in such an open access location to the public). Copies on the baptistery doors they may be but still a marvel to behold after checking out the nearby Duomo.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023

- Herbert C891 contributionsStep into the oldest building in FlorenceCompleted in the 12th century, the Florence Baptistery is believed to be the oldest building in Florence. Centrally located in Piazza del Duomo across from the Florence Cathedral and Giotto's Campanile, you will not miss this imposing octagonal building built in Florentine Romanesque style and coated majestically in green and white marble. It forms part of the monumental complex of Santa Maria del Fiore, and purchase of any of the monument passes will allow access to the baptistery. Be sure to watch out for the following renowned features of the baptistery: (i) its 3 sets of bronze doors, the most important being the replica of the Gates of Paradise, which features 10 bas-relief panels depicting several Old Testament scenes; (ii) the dome's incredibly complex Byzantine mosaic dating back to the 13th century; and (iii) monumental tomb of Antipope John XXIII.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2024

Probably the most underestimated monument in Florence. Magnificent and actually better than the Duomo itself.

The ceiling is being worked on. I thought from the photos that part would still be visible, but it is not. An interesting building, but a disappointment. There are tours that take one above the screens, so some people are still getting to see the ceiling, but it is not part of the regular ticket.

This is a beautiful place to visit, but there are many more stunning places to see in Florence that don’t have scaffolding obscuring half the inside

Unless the line is short or you have a skip the line ticket I wouldn’t make this a number one priority; it is pretty on the inside and very old but you won’t spend that much time inside; better to spend your time seeing other sites if you are cramped for time

Hard to judge this one for us. We got in here as part of our combination ticket (from the official website) to climb the Cupola del Brunelleschi and the Campanile di Giotto. The best part of this building is the ceiling and when we were there it was mostly covered by scaffolding and nets. Of course, we appreciate the fact that they are keeping these fantastic monuments restored. That doesn’t mean it’s not a little disappointing to be unable to see the best part. Other than the ceiling, this is pretty basic. I’m not sure if it’s a place to visit on its own by just buying a ticket here. Hopefully you’re pairing it with other parts of the package ticket options and making a quick stop.

Can i visit the baptistery and bell tower for free without climbing to the top?

The price for the Baptistry is small. There is also a pass for many of the monuments, churches etc. that allows several days for sightseeing when you purchase it.
As I have not been to the interior of the bell Tower for many years, I can not answer that question.
Do not miss the Museo dell Opera del Duomo.

Non è quindi necessario prenderlo on line.

Is there Disabled Access for a wheelchair user. Disabled bathrooms?

Anche on line?
Grazie molte a chi potrà aiutarmi
