About
Founded in 1064 and consecrated with great pomp on September 26th 1118, the Cathedral was built in two stages, one by architect Buscheto, who created the original layout with the basilican body with four aisles and one nave, a transept with one nave and two aisles, and the dome on the cross vault, and one by Rainaldo, who extended the building and the façade. The building was not finally completed until the last quarter of the XII century, when BonannoĂs bronze leaves were placed on the central door, which were later destroyed by the devastating fire of 1595, after which many of the destroyed works were replaced and a vast decorative plan was started.

- adventure and retirePincourt, Canada49 contributionsI saw the Pisa Tower!!If you're in the area, you don't want to miss seeing it! While personally, checking it off my bucket list wasn't a huge "wow" moment, it's still quite impressive. We went early in the morning, so it wasn't too crowded. It was amusing to watch people trying to pose as if they were holding up the leaning tower, but it did get a little annoying after a while. The arch entrance is beautiful, but unfortunately, it's obscured by the numerous souvenir tents.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 June 2023
- NPT1999Commack, New York74 contributionsSo convenient with quick accessSo convenient meeting across the street. Quickly walked in and went through security. Our guide spoke English beautifully and was so knowledgeable. Our tour lasted 45 minutes and we were then able to explore on our own.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 June 2023
- sunseeker06182 contributionsIt’s a cathedralLittle info inside to read, you can listen to a audio guide which costs £2 but it is a fixed location so not ideal. Not too busy as it is larger and open. Worth a visit as it is free but you have to buy a ticket first ( not timed)Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 July 2023
- SamiHove, United Kingdom15 contributionsMust-See Cathedral of PisaThis cathedral is stunning with its beautiful architecture. The fact that it offers free entrance is a nice bonus, and its proximity to the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a major plus. The interior provides a peaceful and breathtaking experience, making it a must-visit site!Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 4 September 2023
- SMLikestoTravelBengaluru, India277 contributionsA peaceful, uncrowded and beautiful cathedralYou can visit the cathedral by collecting the free entry ticket( with a time slot) from the the ticket office. We were there late evening and there was no queue for the tickets and for entry . The interior is beautiful and one can easily spend some time in peace here admiring the place and the art. Don’t miss the bronze doors.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 September 2023
- operalover939Toronto, Canada3,008 contributionsSplendid piece of religious architectureThe Duomo of Pisa is a wonderful work of Romanesque architecture, with a splendid interior and exterior. The coffered ceiling is especially attractive, but there are fine works of art displayed throughout the church. Highly recommended.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 September 2023
- Richard MHampstead Norreys, United Kingdom871 contributionsA gorgeous cathedralThe exterior and interior of the cathedral were beautiful. There are lots of side chapels and intricatelyt carved statues. The star is the main pulpit which is a genius piece of carving and was stunning. A lovely place to visit and well worth it if you are visiting the leaning tower.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023

- TommoMelbourne, Australia50,436 contributionsCathedral construction completed in 1092We visited Pisa Cathedral after visiting the Leaning Tower as it was raining quite hard. The cathedral is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral. Construction started in 1063 and completion was 1092. There was a fire in 1595 where repairs like the replacing the roof occured. You really must visit this cathedral as its quite an azing building inside and out.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 February 2024

Stunning cathedral and well worth a visit. The interior is stunning with so much art inside. The architecture is amazing. Somehow this place stays cool no matter how hot outside.

Stunning architecture and masonry work. Set between the tower and the bapistry it makes for a beautiful setting
The cathedral, counterpointed by the quite austere bapistry, is gorgeous inside with its high gold ceilings, intricate stonework and paintings
Worth a visit for sure

We were there on a very busy day and Bank Holiday in Italy but didn't have to queue at all and were able to walk around inside freely. Outside the building is stunning and inside very beautiful - a must if you are in Pisa.

I enjoyed visiting this cathedral for free. We spent around 10 minutes admiring it. We did wish people would be quiet as the staff kept shushing them very loudly. Don't let the "free entrance to the cathedral" when you buy a ticket to another attraction like the tower fool you though as I'm pretty sure the cathedral is free anyway.

I came to Pisa just to see the tower but found a whole series of other historical places to see around the tower. The Duomo was one of them. Its good if you do it with a guide.

The Duomo is a stunning cathedral but I was slightly underwhelmed. Maybe comparisons to Florence Basilica’s clouded my judgement but it just didn’t wow me. Still a good place to visit and admire the beauty.

Wonderful church that started construction in 1064. Walking tour only, took one photo looking inside. They used whatever stones they could (some were recycled from other monuments - look closely).

Can anyone point me to information about the contemporary sculptures on the modern altar and pulpit? Their simplicity is intriguing in this amazing building.

The new altar and ambo of the Cathedral of Pisa were sculpted by Giuliano Vangi and placed in 2001.

The Cathedral can be seen, small restorations mostly done. Frescos at Camposanto Monumentale completely restored and back in the original place (after > 70 years)

Dear Aly, the ticket offices are in the square, one for each entrance in the square. You can buy the ticket online at the same price than on site.

Grazie.

Hi, I will be visiting ni the coming weeks and whilst I have no plans to climb the tower, i would like to visit the other sights. Some sights mention a free ticked but i dont know where to get these tickets.
Can you help

Hi John,
Just to back up the other answers which are correct. The Duomo is free and the only ticket you cannot book in advance on its own. If you book for any other part of the tower complex you get a free, untimed, Duomo ticket. For a free timed Duomo ticket you need to queue on the day and there are two ticket offices, one on the south side opposite the Duomo and one in the North East corner near the tower. If going inside the baptistry, etc book on-line using the official site opapisa
Enjoy your visit!
