The Cathedral of Speed

Great location to watch MotoGP and WSBK races, all sections of the track are accessible, great atmosphere on the major grand stands. Unfortunately there was still snow in April this year

We drove the Belcar at Tt Assen. Great track, spacious paddock, professional boxes. The restaurant is large, service is friendly.

Nothing compares to the experience of actually being there
6/2019
Our first time to a MotoGP and we weren't disappointed! Much bigger than we imagined and it took a long time to walk round the various observation points but worth the effort. Toilets were plentiful as were the food stands. A bit more catering for people who don't eat a full cooked breakfast wouldn't go amiss. Most of the stands were not covered which was very noticeable in the 32 deg heat on race day so make sure you have high factor cream and plenty of water - we could not locate any water refill stations near our stand and the staff also did not now where they were - poor!. Shuttle bus from the station was frequent and reasonably priced; the walk from the drop off point to he entrance was a hundred metres. Apart from that the racing experience was perfect, most of the seats had brilliant views of various parts of the track and the noise & vibration were out of this world. We are definitely coming back (to a covered grandstand!)

Best circuit on the Moto GP calendar.

All other circuits that I've visited pale in comparison to the Assen circuit for efficiency, facilities, stands and screens.

Gromit assen about

At last the assen GP , more than worth the wait , flew from Southend into Groningen small airports each end means less queues every were . We stopped in Groningen opposed to assen ( Julian Ryder recommended ) a stunning town 25kms from circuit we used hire car to and from circuit over the 3days . On all days including Sunday race day we were back in apartment in under the hour from leaving the circuit car park on a virtually empty A28 same road grid locked to assen .Groningen a surreal town modern medieval hits head on with fantastic bars and eateries in abundance , stop in or as close to centre as you can we walked two mins to our nearest square mega get yourselves there it's not called the cathedral of speed for nothing Assen TT not to be missed 105,000 people cannot be wrong.

First time at the TT
6/2018 • Liikematka
I had never visited the TT races before so 2018 was my first time. I visited as a photographer and got pretty good access to the places I wanted to go. It's quite tough to keep your spot so be prepared to talk to your colleagues and work out a way for you to both shoot what you need.
You also have to scan your media card everytime you enter or exit the paddock so you really can't rush. Be prepared and calculate how much time you will have to stand in line, and you will be ok!
The public can sometimes get on your nerves, especially if you're a girl. It's quite uncommon so either wear earbuds (do this regardless) or just try and ignore the people whistling at you. Luckily the "photo vans" are very helpful! They will take you anywhere you need to go on a pre-planned route and they will pick you up as well. If you want to shoot from the outside however, you will have to walk like everyone else. In these cases, a bicycle will be very helpful as distances can be quite long. Good luck if it's going to be your first time!

Assen MotoGP
6/2018 • Pariskunnat
Just come back from a week in the Netherlands and the Assen MotoGP. This is the 2nd time we've done Assen but this time we did it on our bikes. We've done quite a few GP's now and the easiest to get in and out of by far was Catalunya, however the Dutch are also pretty good at it :) . Getting in was no issue at all, very well signed and they close the back roads off so all traffic is coming the same way and no jams. Cars are separated off and bikes directed to dedicated parking which is fantastic. Rows and rows of marshalled, covered shelter with a concrete strip in the middle so your bike is safe - we took plastic pucks just in case but didn't need them at all. The locals seemed to chain their helmets and leathers to their bikes and just go - didnt see any issues in anything not being there when they all returned to leave. We travelled up in jeans and took backpacks for our jackets etc but used the helmet parks at 2.50 euros per day.

The facilities at the track are about the same as elsewhere (although Valencia still tops a lot of them for loo's and food choice). Majority of toilets are portacabins, clean and well stocked but costs 50c each time. The men were using the open urinals which saved the queues ( or just going direct into the dykes all around the track!).

Well staffed with most staff speaking good English and friendly. The usual choice of food and drink at these venues - sandwiches/burgers/hot dogs/chips although we did find a smoothie/fresh fruit stall which was very welcome in the fantastic weather we had the whole week. We were in the new stand on the 2nd last corner where all the overtaking moves happen - and what an epic race we had the fortune to watch!. Good seating and good visibility - the areas of the track you cant see there is a TV directly opposite so you don't miss any of the action.

You get a wristband on first entry that you just show on going in and out so you don't need to keep searching for your ticket to get back to your seat - great approach!

There is minimal entertainment in between the racing - the odd aerial display now and again but what would be really good would be to show the build up and interviews etc BT Sport do for the TV coverage.

The atmosphere is very good at Assen, its a very friendly track - the only downfall was getting out. The weather was baking hot and due to the one way system the Police had set up, people were getting fed up sitting in queues and trying to find other ways of getting to the front which just caused more queues and longer delays with people getting a bit fractious about other's pushing in. However once out of the track and village itself and onto the motorway, being English we simply filtered through any other traffic there was and made good progress back to our accommodation :) .

If you do qualifying on the Saturday then go into Assen itself afterwards and hang around a few hours or go later at night - they have a festival and there were bands on everywhere with food and plenty of drink flowing - a real party atmosphere. It was a week long city festival this year so it was very busy and lots of families around in the afternoon. You have to park up and walk in though so its not like Montmelo where they only allow bikes in to party - no vehicular access at all.

Overall Assen is really accessible and about 140 miles North of Amsterdam so a couple hours ride max. Only downfall is all the roads are very flat and very straight - not a corner in sight :(

Have to admit the ferry crossing each way was also very good, the food was amazing plenty of entertainment in different bars if you want it and the cabins are pretty good. Small but enough for an overnight sleep waking fresh for the ride ahead, although very expensive when taking 2 bikes :(.

Excellent racing course. Staffed well. Plenty to eat and drink. Lots of merchandise to buy when the TT is on. Done VIP at this event and was well worth the money.
