Top ways to experience Rijksmuseum
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.

    Vermeer exhibition
We were at the Rijksmuseum to attend the Vermeer exhibition. Superbly organised and the paintings were very accessible as the flow of visitors had been well thought through. Made a short visit to the Rijksmuseum afterwards, definitely worth a future visit!

    Great
Mainly went for the Vermeer exhibition which was amazing to see most of his paintings in one place. Like most of the great museums there is to much to take in in one visit so will have to revisit. Nice cafe on site with great choice of food and drink.

    Fantastic Experience/Vermeer Exhibition in town
What a wonderful part of our trip this was. This museum is obviously a world class center and one not to be missed. We spent a total of 6 1/2 hours between the Rijks, which was 4hrs, the Vermeer Exhibition, 2+ hrs and the cafe and gift shop. We were fortunate to get tickets to the Vermeer Exhibition which was terrific and well laid out. It was wonderful to see this many of his paintings all together at one time in the same place. What a treat. The Rijks was very crowded but that was to be expected of a museum of this caliber and it was nice to see so many younger school age children there with someone showing them various paintings and explaining to them the meanings of what the artist's intent was and symbolism of the paintings. What a great experience for the kids. This was really a great display of several forms and styles of art. We have been through many great museums of the world and can certainly add this one as well.

Huge Tribute to the Dutch Masterpieces
Coming from the U.S., I hadn't seen a museum this big in years. But the Rijks is a huge museum showcasing all of the Dutch masters. Since we visited in a weekend day, it was LOADED with people, but you didn't notice the crowds that much until you got in certain parts of the museum. We spent 2hrs here, but you could easily spend a whole day in there to see everything. The Most famous piece there is The Night Watch by Rembrandt. Right now the attraction drawing everyone there en masse is the Vermeer collection, as it's the first, and maybe last time, almost the whole collection is showcased in one place. We were fortunate to be gifted some member passes that allowed us entry at any time, so we took advantage, and viewed the collection. Vermeer's works were beautiful, and in my opinion rival Rembrandt and Van Gogh. They also have an Asian collection, as well as other collectibles & artifacts on the other floors. There is also a cafe in there if you need a quick coffee & snack. The lines are long to enter, and for coatcheck, so give yourself plenty of time for that as well. Buy your ticket in advance online. The museum is €20/person, but if you have the iAmsterdam city card, entry is included. Just book an entry time slot online.

    Massive!
This was great- so much to see! We walked 2 miles in 2 hours and got to see the entire main building. So very crowded (on a weekday) but manageable. The Vermeer exhibit has been sold out for months, but we were told they sometimes have a few extra tickets if you get there first thing in the morning and ask.

    Vermeer bliss
We booked Vermeer months ago and now it's all sold out so we felt very privileged to attend last week. Organisation was perfect with a separate entrance, blue line on the floor to follow and matching wristbands. Exhibition was wonderful with the circa 28 paintings laid out across 8 rooms. Be warned though the Girl with a Pearl Earring returns to the Hague on 31 March. Afterwards we had free access to the world class museum so span around the Dutch masters and interesting colonial exhibits. You could spend days here, it is world class

    Great museum
Been several times and this time also went to the Vermeer exhibition which was very good but too crowded. I felt self-conscious - unlike most people :( - standing in front of a picture for more than a minute or so. Luckily, my mood improved with the other floors which are indeed world class.

Must see in Amsterdam for culture
Book in advance and even so line may be long to enter the museum ad that means waiting outside at busy times. Classic big city museum with the Key gems on the second floor in one central hall that can become very busy, especially around The Night Watch. The Vermeer's are currently in the separate exhibition, so not available if you visit just the main galleries. There are some stunning ship models and I especially liked the animated model of a warship from the age of sail. Allow yourself several hours and don't ignore either the special collection galleries or the top floor 20th century exhibits.

    Wonderful visit!
Absolutely magnificent! We were lucky to be in Amsterdam during the time of the Vermeer exhibit at the Rijksmuseum. And, although the timed tickets were sold out, we decided to become Vreinden of the Rijksmuseum, which gives access to all exhibits at all times. Score! I think they have since discontinued selling the Friends memberships, since the Vermeer exhibition was getting so crowded... And it was crowded. We went on Saturday for a quick visit to get a preview and see how things were laid out, so we could move slowly and enjoy it when we had a lot of time to visit on Monday - when we thought it would be much less crowded. HA!. Monday was about 2X as crowded as Sunday. WE still enjoyed it, and enjoyed the rest of the museum exhibits also, especially the Dutch Masters, and more especially, Nicht Waacht. Do make time for a visit to this pre eminent museum if you are in Amsterdam.

As everyone else says, this is an amazing museum with so much stuff that you can barely see in one day. With that said, the app was very difficult to use, and so we ended up not using it. Not sure if the official audio guide from inside the museum would have been better. We got our tickets several weeks in advance for 9 AM, and it was a good thing because the museum got considerably busier by 10 AM or so. Their collection of decorative parts was particularly enjoyable.

Excellent, well organised gallery & museum. Booking process for tickets easy, meet & greet professional, lockers free, audio guides easy to use and very useful. Cafe brilliant. What’s not to like about this cultural Pearl. You do need to set aside almost a whole day, it really is that big!

The extra exhibition, included in the normal entrance price, is on Frans Hals and is very good. Spent around 45 minutes in this before moving on to some of the main galleries. Special mention for the Special Exhibitions area which has items including model ships, china, various weaponry .. and was pretty quiet. Well-recommended to visit.

This is my favorite art musuem (and maybe even museum) I’ve ever been to! It has some of the best art pieces I’ve ever seen ranging across Eurasia, for the Netherlands themselves , all the way to Japan. We also saw the Frans Hal section, which was great, but I think it’s only there for a limited time. You can get lost for hours in that museum, so much art to look at and it’s all so great and you learn a ton too. They also have these little audio headphone things which a lot of people use that you put on and it tells you more information on what you’re looking at. There aren’t just paintings in this museum either, also ship models, sculptures, and old guns to name a few more things. If you’re in Amsterdam, especially if you’re visiting, you GOTTA go to this museum!!!!!!!!

Another amazing exhibition organized by the Rijksmuseum. This time we visited the exhibition of Frans Hals. We had an audio tour booked and could visit this exhibition on our own which is very convenient.
As usual when buying tickets online for this museum, we booked a certain time slot (which was written on the top of our tickets). But when getting to the entrance of the exhibition a very unfriendly and very impolite host of the Rijksmuseum told us that we do not have a time slot and that we had to get one at the reception. We visited the Rijksmuseum already several times before and never experienced this before, also never had a discussion with such a rude person. As a guest of the Rijksmuseum you pay good money for entrance, so some sort of friendliness can be expected.

The artwork is amazing. It's a large museum and would likely take two days to tour thoroughly. We oldsters found the audio tour a bit confusing, but interesting to listen to once we figured it out. The cafe was a great place to stop for lunch and recharge.

This is an excellent museum of Dutch art with lots of historic artifacts and historic art contexts. I am much more interested in history, and spending 3 hours on its three floors was very illuminating.

This museum is a hidden gem in Europe. It doesn't get all the fanfare of the Louvre or the Sensation Overload that one experiences at the British Museum, but it is a wonder all of it's own. The star of this show is Rembrandt's masterpiece 'The Night Watch." That alone is impressive, but this museum has other great works of art that you probably recognize, such as the Milkmaid and Rembrandt's self portrait as Paul. Once you're done admiring all the artwork, enjoy the building itself, which is gorgeous and houses the Art History Library. All the museums in Amsterdam are quite busy and full and they do limit capacity inside, so I recommend you buy your tickets in advance so that you get to visit. The website was quite easy to navigate and we bought the tickets while we were on the train, so by the time we traveled the 30 minutes there and jumped in line, we were in! Plan on 2 hours at least if you really want to look and enjoy...this is a feast for the eyes!

It was wonderful. So much to see in every corner. Well presented. . Lots of room to take your time looking at the beautiful art. As expected, around some of the well known pieces of art it wasn’t as easy to see
