Top ways to experience Van Gogh Museum
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.

    Excellent!
Superb display of Van Gogh's work that was hung alongside the work of his peers who influenced his work over his life. Big exhibition, I would go earlier in the day next time as the legs were a bit tired in late afternoon. It's an age thing!
Thank you for your review. We're happy to hear you enjoyed learning about Vincent's life and work at our museum! Kind regards, Jasmijn.

20 years since my last visit and the experience has been improved.
Almost exactly 20 years ago was my previous visit to the Van Gogh museum. Then the visit was somewhat spoiled by the crowds. It was tantamount to impossible to contemplate a single painting in solitude. Now the museum has a system of pre-booked, timed entry tickets. I was able to exhaust my eyes and legs over a couple of self indulgent hours studying and enjoying the history, work and influence of this great artist. One downside is the horrible habit people have of standing in front of art and photographing it on their cell' 'phones. At times all you can see of the work is a sea of digital images through cell' 'phones held aloft. Do people not use their own eyes any more?
Thank you for your positive feedback, we hope to welcome you again in the future! Kind regards, Jasmijn.

    Excellent museum/Don't miss this one
We VERY much enjoyed our trip through this great museum. We spent over three and a half hours and could easily have gone another hour. The museum is well laid out and has plenty of things to see and experience regarding the artist's life. There is an easily usable coatroom, a nice cafeteria and several bookstore/giftshops. The day and time we went was VERY crowded, but there was no waiting in line. This is a must see while in town.
Thank you for your review. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed your visit! Kind regards, Jasmijn.

    Worth a visit
We decided to visit this just a couple of days before arriving in Amsterdam and I'm so pleased we did. Very well presented, organised and well thought out. It was busy but not too bad. The information was informative and interesting. The locker system was a bit strange and very little information or staff to help but we figured it out eventually. Definitely worth a visit (even for non-art lovers like us!)

    World Class Museum
The museum is probably the best curated and organised that I have ever visited. Undoubtedly World Class. If you go : 1. Use the personal audio guide its fantastic. 2 Leave time to put your gear in the v sufisticated electronic lockers. 3 The display is chronological through Floors 1, 2, 3. 4 Ascend floors 2 to 3 by the stairs not the lift as this guarantees you progress to the end ie his death and last paintings chronological.
Thank you for your positive feedback, we hope to welcome you again in the future! Kind regards, Jasmijn.

    Great Visit
We really enjoyed our visit to the Van Gogh museum. We purchased the audio tour and opted for the highlights tour of the permanent collection, which worked well for our group. There are so many works to see, if can feel overwhelming. The galleries were also packed full of people. In addition to the permanent collection, we spent time in the exhibition, “Choosing Vincent”, which we all found fascinating. The museum itself is well run. There are lockers for coats and other belongings, elevators and escalators for those who can’t manage steps (which isn’t the case everywhere in Amsterdam) and a lovely cafe. Definitely worth a visit - you get a lot of bang for your buck with this ticket.
Thank you for your review. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed your visit! Kind regards, Jasmijn.

One of the Best Museums in the World
One of the best museums in the world, this museum tells the story of Vincent's life in art in chronological order. So many of his original works are here. There are four levels in the museum, showcasing his work, as well as some art of those he inspired. Spend the few extra euros & get the audio guide, as it provides all the context needed to explain the artwork. The museum is always crowded, so buy your tickets online at least four days in advance to get the entry time you want. Also, there are lockers you can use to store your things. Staff was very nice and helpful.
Thank you for your elaborate and positive feedback, we hope to see you again sometime! Kind regards, Jasmijn.

Superb presentation and plenty to surprise you
This museum is a joy to visit. The building has a character of its own, interesting spaces on each of four display floors, from zero, tapering to the third. Of course you will be delighted by Sunflowers but for me the story of Van Gogh’s life and the inspiration he drew from the work of fellow artists are what makes this a stand out experience.

Great place if you like Van Gogh.
We went on a Monday morning and the museum was quite busy. We saw people without pre-booked tickets being told it was sold out. Really good selection of Van Gogh's works, and the audio guide is worth it for a little extra. The restaurant is also a pleasant place for lunch, though not exactly cheap.
Thank you for the positive review! Kind regards, Jasmijn.

    A Must-See While in Amsterdam
A powerful examination of Van Gogh and his body of work. I was impressed by the layout of the entire collection as it showed how he evolved as an artist. Highly recommend going early. We were first thing in the morning and never had to fight for views. We did not pay to enter the temporary exhibit, but the permanent collection was more than satisfactory.
Thank you for the positive recommendation! Kind regards, Jasmijn.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Amsterdam for me personally. I thought the museum was very well organized, and a great variety of work from van Gogh was on display. We got advance tickets for 9 AM so that we could get it before the museum got too busy, because it was definitely crowded by 10 AM. We visited in March, and I can only imagine how busy it gets in the summer.

Such great paintings here! Most of them are Van Gogh classics, so this museum is like nothing you’ve seen before! It’s a little expensive though, Rijksmuseum is honestly a better deal and has much more art, but Van Gogh museum is defiantly a must go whether you’re a local, or visiting Amsterdam! Such cool art from Gogh and others and it tells you a ton about Van Gogh’s life as well!

Van Gogh is instantly recognisable in his art, so visiting the museum housing his biggest art collection was something not to be missed.

To be expected, so much better in person!

We thoroughly enjoyed the journey through Vincent’s life and his inspirations, and experienced a clearer understanding of the man behind the art. The joy and happiness he felt in the rural countryside, his close bond with his brother as well as the challenges he faced - and his everlasting legacy in the colour he brings to future generations.

Fittingly, the exhibition awes with those most famous pieces like ‘Sunflowers’, but also introduced us to new favourites, best brought to life in person, like ‘Almond Blossom’.

A visit to Amsterdam is not complete without playing homage to one of its best known sons. Amazingly a decade of intensity created his artwork of over 2000 pieces, none of which sold in his all to short lifetime.

We are all very fortunate to be able to share in his creations.

Of course you don't want to miss this. This is probably the number one attraction in Amsterdam. This museum is very well thought and does have a beautiful collection. Even the children loved, which is a saying a lot

The brush strokes. They’re magic! The thicker and wider, the more magic!

Van Gogh considered himself a failure… My hope is that Van Gogh knows how much his works are celebrated, respected and appreciated. Many of these impressionist artists didn’t live to see their significant success and impact on the world.

He took his life at 37 years old due to multiple bouts with mental health!

I know a lot about Van Gogh but here is what I learned on this visit.
1. He drew 1100 works. I knew he dabbled in etching/drawing but I had no idea there were 1100 works.
2. He produced 900 paintings in 10 years. I knew he died young but I didn’t know the amount of paintings he produced in that time. This is on average…a painting every 30 hours.

Math Break - that is 2,000 works in 10 years! 1100 drawings and 900 paintings! So Van Gogh was a machine!

3. Van Gogh painted himself because he couldn’t afford models. He also painted over his art works and on the other side of his art works because the canvases were so expensive.
4. Van Gogh’s mental health doctor was Dr. Gachet. I didn’t know he lived with his doctor for some time and his doctor was also an artist.

Greatly enjoyed this visit! Will be back!

Located in Amsterdam’s museum quarter, the Van Gogh Museum is a must-visit for any art lover or admirer of Vincent Van Gogh.

The museum is well-organised and simple to navigate, with helpful staff members available to answer any questions. The lockers are easy and free to use.
It was amazing to be able to view in person 'Wheatfield with Reaper' and ‘Garden of the Asylum’. The museum never felt overcrowded and you always felt you had plenty of time to look at everything.

The museum has a vast collection of his lesser-known works, which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of Van Gogh’s early life. The museum also includes other contemporary artists from the Impressionist clan like Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin.

Remember to book a ticket before arriving, it does get sold out.

I highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting Amsterdam.
