A must do when in Kampen!
9/2020
This is a must do when in Kampen, Great display on the history of the town, has temporary exhibits and then you also visit the attached original medieval house. The museum is really well done and takes about an hour so a perfect change of pace when shopping and eating in Kampen. Highly recommend

Loved our visit of this museum. The movies are wonderful. The stories of the last fisherman and the last city farmer were great. The paintings of the monarchs is very worthwhile too.

Enjoyed looking at the history of Kampen. It was helpful that they gave us a booklet with the English translation however we couldn’t follow any of the videos (subtitles would have been better)

Enjoyable!

We loved it. The 2nd floor particularly, which is dedicated to water and Kampen's waxing and waning fortunes linked to the IJssel river. The audio tour (in Dutch) is informative as well as entertaining. Well done! There's a good English translation - print out. There's a special exhibition as well, organized with the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam, called 'het Rijks aan de IJssel'. Another must see. One can access the old City Hall - most impressie - via the museum. There's a lovely little museum cafe as well as lockers. No coins required. There's also free Wifi and a lift (in case you don't want to climb the stairs). The museum is right at the entrance of the town when coming from the railway station. Just across the bridge.

What a surprize to discover this town with history
6/2016 • Kaverit
We did not even consider going to this "unknown" town if it was not for our friend who we accompanied on a pilgrimage to the birthplace of his father.

We went arrived from Amsterdam after a 90minute journey by train costing e24 return. The station on the fringe of the town at the very famous elevator bridge that forms part of the rich history.

Across the bridge you walk right into the old part of town with its cathedral like church and town square. At the entrance the temporary Town museum is situated and the museum attendants where very helpful and took us on a personal tour through the history.

Interesting facts like the bridge being a great income for the town with the toll that boats had to pay to pass through it, the royal family and the fact that their horses is still fed with the rich in nutrient grass from the area.

The church and the evolutionary road it to in Kampen. The town fathers and their visionary and missionary positions. The last fisher man in town and the old ways the cattle use to be bedded in the houses during the winter months. All if these interesting facts made the visit to Kampen more special.

It was a real journey back in time for us and especially my friend who had taken this trip back in his family history.

The museum visit was 6 euro p/p and for over 60's it is 4 euro. Kids under age are free.

We visited this museum with 2 persons. It is situated in the former City hall plus an ancient building. They give a good review of the city and the history going back to the middle ages. The use modern techniques and toouch screens. Very beautiful big paintings of the history of our royal dinasty. Much information how to keep your feet dry in Kampen situetd at the river IJssel. Very worthwile for 1 to 2 hours. You can have coffee, tea and cake. Small museum store.

A surprisingly diverse and informative museum
5/2015 • Pariskunnat
This museum combines unique displays on history, art and the environment. The "water" room on the second floor connects all three of these themes around the history of Kampen as it relates to the IJssel river and the Zuiderzee/IJsselmeer. The room includes video and audio, historic artifacts, reproductions of artwork showing Kampen and its vicinity, and documents. Unlike many smaller Dutch museums, much of the explanatory material is translated into English. An adjoining room continues the water theme into the present, with an interactive exhibit about climate change and sea level rise (unfortunately for English speakers, this room is almost entirely in Dutch).
One floor down, the jewel of the museum is a collection of life-size, full-length portraits of every ruler (stadholder, prince, king, queen) from the House of Orange. This is followed by rooms dedicated to art with the themes of religion and government. Finally, the old city hall portion of the museum contains a preserved municipal courtroom from Kampen's golden age, again with excellent interpretation in English as well as Dutch.
Altogether, this museum is one of the best small museums that we have encountered, and could easily take several hours to enjoy.

Fantastic museum
8/2013 • Pariskunnat
I really liked the variety that this museum had to offer. From early works of the greats from the 18th Century to work from the 1900's to 1950's to works of modern day artists. This museum is great.

Watch life size paintings of all Dutch Royals and more
10/2011 • Soolomatka
This museum has a unique series of life size paintings of all Royals of the House of Orange on display, including the present Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Starting with William of Orange in the 16th century you can follow Princes, Kings and Queens through the ages. Furthermore the museum has an interesting, well set up exhibition on the relation of the Dutch with water and changing exhibitions from contemporary artists. You can also see a beautiful old court room with magnificient details (see picture). The museum lies in the center of the old part of Kampen, close to the bridge over the IJssel. River and just 15km (10 mile) or a 10 minute train ride from main town Zwolle. All-in-all well worth the trip.
