Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Just behind our hotel, this place was lively with pop-up food stalls and the usual cafes spilling into the cobbled area. Really nice.

A lovely church and surrounding square with sculptures, a fountain and some colourful fish murals too.

The church isn't worth a special trip, but the Ste. Catherine area of the city is an easy walk, and a little quieter, with some excellent cafes. The area behind the church is in decline, or struggling to make a comeback, hard to tell which.

This is the small public square situated in front of St. Catherine's Church to the northeast and Rue du Vieux Marché aux Grains to the southwest. It seems there is a weekly Wed food market held here as well as annual Christmas markets in December.
Otherwise, the square has tree lined seating as well as cafes with alfresco seating. You can pop in for a drink and meal before/after visiting St. Catherine's Church. In addition to the church, there is a free standing Baroque tower just beside and one of the old watchtowers (Black Tower) from the original city wall fortifications just behind the church. These are worth seeing while in the area. Then carry on with other intended sightseeing nearby.

Despite the various reviews commenting on the vibrancy of this public square, I did not feel that when I made my way there during a weekday afternoon; definitely not the kind of buzz that I felt in Grand Place and the thoroughfares around it. Place Ste Catherine is anchored by Saint Catherine’s Church and surrounded by numerous bars and restaurants. Perhaps due to routine maintenance, the shallow pool on the square has been dried up, which further brings out the blandness of the place. Unless you’re here for a meal or drinks, this place is good for a quick look-see, then proceed to your next destination.

Visit the area for lunch or drink and enjoy walking around St Catherine's. Once a thriving parish now one to enjoy from the outside.

How to get to Christmas market from the Grand Place

Hi !
It is a 15 minutes walk ! Look at the map on the right hand side of this page (or go to Google Map) , zoom it for Place Sainte-Catherine and you will find 3 or 4 streets you could walk between the 2 locations . In case of bad weather , you could take the metro (subway) to the Sainte-Catherine Station . The exit is in the middle of the Place !
