- bengtnitramMalmö, Sweden263 contributionsAmazing historical placeA fantastic place to visit away from the tourist hoards in Athens, at least in March. The museum has many preserved artifacts and interesting history to read about. The outdoor ruins are beautiful and equally as impressive to walk around in. Be prepared for the weather to potentially change fast if you're there in spring thou since it is pretty high up in the mountains. Have an extra sweater just in case.Visited March 2023Travelled on businessWritten 1 April 2023
- cocochanel75Eastern Norway, Norway25 contributionsGreat Tour. Bad weather. Bad lunchThe company states that they do pick ups. However, this is not exactly true. We lived in One of the hotels in the centre. They did not pick us up. So We had to take a taxi. No real issue With taking a taxi. Just irritating they say pick up. When they do not up. As depends on the location. Our Hotel is very central based. Yet they still could not pick us up or drop us. So make sure you Know what the arrangement is. Before hand You cannot do d about the weather. So i would advise to plan for bad weather, unless you come in the part of year where there is little rain. If it has been raining a few days before or the day before and it is still damp. The area may be slippery so good shoes is wise. The cafe just outside the museum has little space, Albeit awkward sitting place. The museum very interesting and we were lucky With out guide katya. Very Sweet and knowledgeable woman. The lunch. Please do not pre pay your lunch, unless they change the menu the lunch was poor and definately not worth the money. I believe there are Much better restaurants in the village. Also a Much better and wiser option is to order at the restaurant a la carte. The restaurant itself was pleasant enough. I would describe it as fawlty towers, organised chaos. Definately choose a la carte, which Means the not paying for lunch option. I am vegetarian the main dish was a mashed up stew. My husband ordered the meatball dish. There was no meat balls it was like hamburgere. It was also a Shame We did not stop in the cute village.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 April 2023
- PaanthaSan Diego, California162 contributionsWonderful day trip from AthensWhat an amazing site. Totally worth the day trip from Athens. We had a car and drove ourselves, it’s an easy drive to Delphi. Purchased an audio tour and were able to do the entire site following the audio tour. The temple of Apollo and the theater are amazing. We were able to do the entire site in 2 hours with the audio guide we purchased online. The museum is wonderful too and you could spend an hour here but we were done in 20-30 mins.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2023
- Kate M3 contributionsA few days in DelphiWe stayed here for four nights. It was good to have time to see the archaeological site and museum which were amazing and I would recommend staying not just passing through. We walked the Kirra path to Itea. We got the bus back. We also spent a beach day in Itea which had better value restaurants than Delphi. We didn't do the Corycean cave walk but wish we had as it sounded great according to a couple we talked to. But apparently very steep up and takes about 8 hours total. You can apparently get a taxi part way up (ask in your hotel?). Beautiful spring flowers everywhere and mountain ambience. The actual town of Delphi I did find a little sad. Staff quite worn down by the endless hordes passing through I guess and on average more expensiveand not such good value as other placws in Greece. I recommend Phivos restaurant and the Telescope cafe bar though who have friendly staff entrprenurial attitude and good food/ drinks and service.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2023
- KT785Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia308 contributionsA necessary visit for anyone interested in Greek history. If there is only one other place a history buff is able to visit outside Athens, it should be Delphi. Because of its mystical nature and power of its Oracle, this is probably the most concentrated location where most Greek city states are represented. Two of the most popular deities, Apollo and Athena, have temples in Delphi and to put it bluntly, Delphi offers the best bang for the buck amongst historical sites.Visited April 2023Written 23 April 2023

- Lauren MFort Worth, Texas3 contributionsMust visit in Delphi! The archeological sites and museum of Delphi and the Temple of Apollo are absolutely incredible! Make sure to bring water, sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, and an umbrella because the sun can be a beat down. It is worth all of the hiking though, as the history and views are absolutely worth it! Be prepared to walk the equivalent of about 25 flights of stairs and about 2 miles total.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 June 2023
- CJWashington DC, District of Columbia16 contributionsExcellent day trip from AthensExcellent day trip from Athens! We rented a car and drove 2.5 hours to Delphi. The drive and highway roads (with tolls/ excellent highway) was spectacular crossing through the beautiful country side to the foothills of the stunning mountain of Mount Parnassos. Delphi is tucked in the mountain. The archeological site featuring the historic/ mythological ruins of the oracle is amazing, as well as the famous “navel” of the world relic. As a Bonus, you also pass through the picturesque town of Arachova which is the famous Greek ski resort akin to the “Aspen” of Greece during the winter season.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 July 2023
- HelpfulAngelAtlanta, Georgia1,226 contributionsDon't miss this - worth the driveThis was one of the best parts of the our Greek trip! Delphi is so beautiful and magical. It was worth the two hour drive from Athens. We took a tour with Getaways Greece which was a day trip. The vistas were just beautiful on the drive. Once you get to Delphi it's like you're transported to somewhere magical! I loved it better than Acropolis which was so touristy. The crowds were sparse here and it was lovely to take in the sites at your own pace without being herded like cattle. Mind you it does take a bit of walking if you want to get to the top to see the stadium. But even if you don't go all the way to the top it is still a beautiful place to visit and you can still get a lot out of it without going to the top. Wear comfortable shoes.Visited May 2023Written 19 July 2023

A combined ticket provides access to the wonderful museum and the archaeological site and you do not want to miss either! Even if you only visit to view the Chariiteer it is worth the entry money though the museum offers so much else besides. One can but imagine the excitement of being involved in an archaeological dig that revealed such treasures!
The archaeological site is a short walk down the road and is beautifully located below a high rocky escarpment with the valley spread out below. One can only imagine the experience of visiting the site at its peak but what is here now is fascinating and allows you to put the museum pieces into context.
Everything you ever heard and more!

We reviewed Delphi 11months ago on our previous visit, and this was a revisit.
Our SMALL ship approached its berth in Itea (a city located below Delphi.
Last October we spent a good 2.5 hours on a bus to get up to this location of Delphi from Athens.
Back then we had observed this port town from up on mountain heights from Delphi and speculated that it was where our ship this September (2023) would pull into.
Back in October (from up on Delphi) we wondered / were amazed at how all the stone to build Delphi had to be hauled up the mountain from this port.
a few reminders:
• This site is dedicated to Apollo with construction starting around 6,000 BC.
• The story goes that the god, Appollo had released two eagles, with one flying (as compared to what they understood) north to south and the second eagle East to West following the sun). Where those two birds met after circling the known world, the location was called the center of the world, and that place was Delphi.
• Those entering this place in ancient times first purified themselves at the nearby Sanctuary of Athena (lower down on the mountain and this is also where Olympic individuals trained).
• The temple was built over a thermal vent coming up from the earth, and the practice of the ORACLE was started.
• The oracle person (usually a women) sat at the far end of the temple over a vent of mysterious vapors (possible thermal ground water hitting the hot mantel of the planet ---OR—one of the priests down below pouring water over hot rocks) all as a show that the oracle was receiving messages from Apollo ==== OK!
• This questioning & predicting into the future would only occur once a month, where the visitor (after leaving a token of compensation in the treasury building) would pose a question to the oracle. The Oracle would then give a convoluted cryptic answer, which the temple priest WOULD THEN offer an interpretation of what the oracle had replied (usually open for interpretation in two different directions, but always within a positive format for the receiver.
It was then on to again view the Temple of Apollo, where the oracle once a month prophesied / counseled those with a question.
As we approach the Temple of Apollo, we again found us on the Sacred Way used by ancient Greeks and even the Romans that occupied this place for over 200 years.
After viewing the temple (many stones long gone as locals over the years have taken them to build new structures in the town we stayed in last November). We entered the 5,000-seat theater, and this time Tom DID NOT go all the way to the top (been there done that = A huff and a puff!!).

This was phenomenal! The site lies in a stunning landscape, which takes your breath away, and much of the temple complex is clearly recognisable. You need to be somewhat fit, as it lies against a steep hillside with lots of stairs. There are remains of temples, a theatre and a stadion. The stadion lies not in the complex itself, but further up the mountain and it is a stiff climb. At every corner you think you must be there already, but it is always one bend of the road further ahead. But it is worth the climb. Even though we were there in November and arrived early, parking was difficult. There is not a real parking lot and you have to park along the road, sometimes rather far away. The museum was not that great and although you can buy some drinks and sandwiches at the site, there is not a place to sit to eat and drink (apart from 5 or so chairs inside, which are always occupied and thronged). So we had to sit outside on a wall. This is a missed opportunity in our opinion, for after the visit in the full sun we would have loved to sit on a terrace with a cool drink.

Delphi is a small and picturesque town. I think it's best visited in the shoulder season- mid-Sept. to November. The heat and the crowds in the summer season I would not wish on anyone!

There is a lot to see at Delphi. There are examples of ancient inscriptions and how the city was constructed. There is a fair amount of walking and climbing, so you will get a good workout!

Incredible place, still full of ancestral energy. Surroundings are so beautiful, no wonder this place was "chosen" as "omphalus" of the known world.
If you go there, be sure to book a tour with Ilektra Togia, a licensed, pationate and extremely knowledgeable guide.

We booked this tour through Gate -1 . Started from Athens, on 2nd day we reached Delphi. Delphi is located high in the mountains.
Very spiritual place . Identified as center of universe
And navel of the earth, Mother Earth “ Gays”
I do nor recall all Olympian Gods , but connected to Apollo and Zeus
We can the Oracle of Delphi seating place where oracle used to give prophecy behind the curtain
Roman Forum and at the top , stadium
Though we climbed all the way to stadium , it was not worth. We should have just stopped at the Oracle, seating place and meditated. We did meditation for 15 minutes
Just near Oracle we saw
Omphalos- is similar to Siva Linga ( OM - Phallus)?
Great spiritual experience

A stop at the end of a tour of Greece and some other countries including Ephesus, I wish we had done this stop at the beginning of the trip rather than the end. The museum is very well done but it is a shame that you can’t see the larger pieces (or replicas) in the spots where they once stood. It was a rainy day and there were few other people outside as we toured the sight. If you do go here continue into town for an outstanding lunch at Vakhos.

We were here as part of an organised tour in September 2022. We had a local guide with us, so had radio headsets to hear him, which was really useful to understand the full history of the complex. It's best to try and get there early before it gets too crowded and too hot - we spent a couple of hours here, then headed to the museum to find out more.
The site is on the hill so expect steps, but it's very much worth it. Apollo's Temple and the stadium at the very top (more steps / slopes but is worth it for a look as they had chariot races there) are the most intact, although there are some written information guides by some of the sites with the odd photo of what it would have looked like - the guides are in Greek, French and English. The view from the top above the amphitheatre is worth the climb (see the photos).
Overall, a great experience and I'd advice at least an audioguide, if not a real person, to help you get the most from it.

Hi - We are heading to Delphi in early May, and I know it is possible to buy the tickets onsite, but I am trying to find the official site to purchase tickets online, but am only coming up with tours.
We have a tour guide booked for Delphi and Osios Loukas, so perhaps she could purchase ahead of time for us?
Thanks
do you have guides there at Delphi that could take a group of 18 around and how much would that be?

National roads of Greece are fine. You should rent a car from athens, go to Kalabaka and stay there for the night. Visit the monasteries early in the morning. No need for a guide there, the monks will tell you everything you need to know. Then drive up the national road, pass Lamia and take the regional road through Amfissa to Delphi. Stay in the village of Delphi, but don't miss a dinner at Zahos' tavern in Livadi and a late night drink in Arachova. My personal favourite is Husky, a rock themed bar on a small side alley. Visit the archeological site WITH A GUIDE.
The place you want to visit do not have frequent bus connections. You will miss valuable time and will get tired trying to figure out local bus connections. I dont think there is a direct bus or train connection of Kalabaka to Delphi, both towns are not the main ones in the region. Rent a car. Enjoy!
Ps: spend a day or two in Athens.
