- Wendy1525Cardiff, United Kingdom13 contributionsA great day outA lovely boat ride to the fortress! Everything was clearly signposted with plenty of information on leaflets or via an app to show you the way to go. We spent a great day strolling around - not many food outlets were open due to the time of year we visited but we had lunch in the museum cafe and thought the variety on offer, the prices and the quality of the food was excellent. We visited the military museum and it was fascinating - so well set out and so interesting. We also went to the Suomenlinna museum and that was well worth a visit too. Lovely views from the King's Gate area too - lots to see and do here and a great place to explore.Dear Wendy1525, Thank you for your nice review, we are glad to hear you enjoyed your visit! The boat ride to Suomenlinna is indeed a wonderful part of the overall experience. Some of the restaurants and cafés are open all year around and some only during the summer season. The opening hours can be checked from our calendar at: https://www.suomenlinna.fi/en/opening-hours/. To learn more about the fascinating history of the fortress, you can join a guided tour or visit the museums, like you mentioned. Hope to see you again soon in Suomenlinna! - LostInTimePittsburgh, Pennsylvania11,753 contributionsTop spotThis place is a top destination for a reason. It’s great. Lots of the fort is available to see. And they let you go almost everywhere. The old walls are massive. But the grounds are equally nice. This is a must see in Helsinki.Dear Flyingboy58, thank you for your review! We are glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to Suomenlinna. The fortifications and the islands themselves are indeed very impressive. To visit Suomenlinna responsibly, we recommend that you follow the blue route which takes you to all the main sights. - abmilwMilwaukee, Wisconsin674 contributionssomething to dobuy a boat ticket at the harbor before board and take ferry across to island. They run frequently and short ride to island. a lot of walking on island. nice views, some interesting history. Food eh - they have a few places/shops/museums to see when there. probably 2 hours or so depending. Glad we went, gave something to do. Ok with kids (but maybe not young ones) a lot of walking.Dear abmilw, thank you for your review! One can get to Suomenlinna on a ferry that is part of the public transport network in Helsinki, HSL. - Trebor5417Doncaster, United Kingdom461 contributionsA short ferry trip back in time. After a short time on the ferry you embark in a place steeped in history. Obviously as a giant fortification it's military background for almost 200 yrs is worth soaking up. The museums are amazing with explanations in English and Swedish so made very easy to understand. You could easily spend all day here or fly around in a couple of hours. The visitors centre and many cafes keep you fed and watered.Dear Trebor5417, thank you for your review, glad you enjoyed your visit to Suomenlinna! Suomenlinna is a great place to learn about some of the important events in Finnish history while exploring the impressive fortification islands. As a unique example of the European military architecture of its time, Suomenlinna is also a Unesco world heritage site. There are six different museums in Suomenlinna. One can for example visit the Ehrensvärd museum, which is the house of the founder of the fortress, or the decommissioned submarine Vesikko. - D PWellington, New Zealand6,704 contributionsFantastic day out in good weatherWhat a fantastic place to go for the day or even half a day. Catch the ferry over and sit up top. It’s not far and relatively cheap. Walk around the expansive fortress and in the tunnels that run inside the big forts walls. With stunning sea vistas and plenty of places to stop for a drink, a meal or the loo it’s perfect for everyone. Clear easily marked paths make for a good day out.Dear 854DP, thank you for your kind review! We are very glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to Suomenlinna. The ferry trip to Suomenlinna, which takes some 15 minutes, is a great chance to take in views of Helsinki from the sea as well as smaller islands on the way. Suomenlinna offers a lot to see and explore, including the awesome fortifications, tunnels and beautiful nature. - Katie HMelbourne, Australia322 contributionsVisit in the morning for a quieter experienceA stroll around the fortress is a lovely way to spend a morning. Views across the water are beautiful, and to garner a perspective on the way this island has been used - and continues to be - is interesting in understanding more about Helsinki and Finland. Some tips for your visit: Wearing good walking shoes here is helpful, particularly around the walls. There are many cobblestones and areas that are not easy to navigate for those with strollers / prams / wheelchairs, or those who may be unsteady on their feet. Plan to head out on a morning ferry to enjoy the island before the throngs. In the summer, the queues for the ferry at Market Square are long and it makes for many, many people on the island at once. Make sure to buy the Helsinki Card for your visit here (and the city in general), otherwise you’ll be paying an entry fee to each building on the island that you may wish to visit.Dear La_tiburona, thank you for your review! In Suomenlinna, one can spend the day exploring the sea fortress and beautiful islands. Exploring the fortress and islands is free, but the museums in Suomenlinna, excluding the Customs Museum, have an entry fee. The six museums in Suomenlinna include for example the Ehrensvärd museum, which is the house of the founder of the fortress, and the decommissioned submarine Vesikko. It is indeed important to wear good walking shoes and take into account that some roads on the islands are paved with cobblestones or may otherwise have difficult terrain. We took the city pass / tram pass on a service vessel across the bay. I think we used our MPC card.. nobody ever checked it... saved money from going on the tourist boatsDear amorace, Thank you for reviewing us! It's truly lovely to hear that you had a pleasant visit to Suomenlinna. The sea fortress is indeed a great place to enjoy being outdoors, and there are several charming cafés and restaurants scattered around the islands. The best way to see the most important sights of Suomenlinna is to follow the Blue Route. The Blue Route is also a safe and responsible way to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Find the route and more information about Suomenlinna from our online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. - RYC88Centreville, Virginia1,278 contributionsSo fun to explore! It's hard to add anything to what everyone else has written about this place. It is definitely a must-do in Helsinki and it definitely takes at least three hours to get the most of the island. Don't miss going to the dry dock, which was one of the biggest in the world when it was built. It looks like you can't walk around, because it's a working area, but you can and should. The museum is great and the introductory video is very helpful, but the joy is walking all over the island, through all the fort entrances and tunnels and on the bastions and bulwarks and by the cannons and the King's Gate. The ferry over is nice and there are departures a few times an hour - just check the schedule before you go.Dear RYC88, thank you very much for your review and recommendation! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed everything from the ferry trip and the Suomenlinna Museum to exploring the fortifications on foot. One can indeed easily spend the entire day at the fortress getting to know the historical sights and enjoying the services of museums, cafés and restaurants. The Suomenlinna dry dock is indeed an impressive sight to see. The dry dock area itself is not accessible to the public, but one can observe the dock operations from the observation deck, located near the Great Courtyard. You can find your way to all the sights with the help of Suomenlinna online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. We are also always happy to help at Suomenlinna Visitor Centre, which is located right next to the ferry pier. The Blue Route is the absolute best way to see all the main sights of Suomenlinna. It is important to stay on marked routes while walking around the islands. This way we can all participate in protecting the unique architecture and beautiful archipelago nature of UNESCO World Heritage Site Suomenlinna! We hope to see you again soon at the fortress! Possibly not the best time of the year or day of the week (Sunday) to visit as it was mostly closed and bitterly cold but it was still class to see a world heritage site. It's one of the strangest places I've been with such a strange atmosphere. It kinda reminded me of a concentration camp or something. The military museum is well worth a visit as are the main fortress parts. We enjoyed the ferry trip over through the ice too!

Dear 497em1,
thank you for your kind review, we are happy to hear you enjoyed visiting Suomenlinna!
Suomenlinna is indeed a great place for a stroll among historical architecture and with beautiful sea views. The best way to explore the islands is to follow the blue route, which is marked with blue signs and takes you to all the main sights. The public transport ferry operates to Suomenlinna all year round, and the 15-minute trip is a great way to admire views of Helsinki from the sea. It is especially important to follow the Blue route during winter as the route is maintained all year round, though it is still important to be careful and watch your step.
Welcome again to Suomenlinna!

My trip to Suomenlinna was fairly last minute after unexpectedly having a few free hours. I hopped on the ferry and watched the YouTube video about the Blue Route (on mute) on the way over. Upon landing, I expected blue signs to Kings Gate to start immediately, but I only saw the ones pointing back to the dock. If the voiceover on the video said where to start, I obviously missed it so I had to make a couple left or right choices before I ever encountered a blue route sign. Luckily I had taken a photo of the first map to get to that point.
While it is obvious this is probably a very beautiful place to go in better weather, I found it not that enjoyable in the snow and ice. I had to spend more time looking at the ground to make sure I was avoiding ice, that I really didn’t feel I saw much. You also really had to stick entirely to the blue route as the rest of the paths were not maintained and had “at your own risk” signs. That being said, there were also areas on the blue route that were pure ice despite being maintained.
I hope to return in summer and see it properly.

Dear anonymous9257, thank you for your review.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, all our signage must be carefully planned so that it fits into the historical landscape. However, we appreciate your feedback about the blue signs and will definitely take the points you made into consideration.
As you also noticed, it is best to follow the Blue route to explore the fortress in a safe way, as this is the route maintained also in winter. This winter has been particularly challenging in route maintenance due to frequent sudden changes of temperature. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and we totally agree that you should watch your step.
If you don't enjoy walking in these winter conditions so much, you can visit the Suomenlinna Museum to learn about the history of the fortress and to watch a short movie there. Military Museum is also open all year round. Additionally, enjoy a nice break at one of the cafés and restaurants!
Hope to see you again in Suomenlinna in summer! Stop by Suomenlinna Visitor Centre next to the ferry pier. Our staff there will be happy to give you the best tips of the day.

Dear leonardogQ7113BO, thank you for your review.
Sorry to hear that we didn't quite fulfill your expectations. As you also say, the ferry ride is a quite nice experience on its own. You get to see Helsinki from the sea and in winter the ferry often goes through icy waters.
To explore the fortress and to see the main historical sights of this UNESCO World Heritage Site we recommend following the Blue route. This route is marked in all our maps with a blue line. The route is about 30-40 minutes walk one way and it is maintained all year round.
You can delve deeper into the rich history of the fortress by visiting the Suomenlinna Museum or joining a guided walking tour. There are also nice cafés and restaurants for an enjoyable break.
Hope to see you again in Suomenlinna! Stop by Suomenlinna Visitor Centre next to the ferry pier. Our staff there will be happy to give you the best tips of the day so that you will hopefully have a more interesting visit experience!

This looked like a very interesting fortress and island. Unfortunately, we were there during the coldest weather in several decades, so we didn't explore as much as we would have liked. Lot's of interesting history, museums and old structures. There are also several cafes and restaurants so you can plan on spending some time and having a place to eat.

Dear GRanger88, thank you for your review!
The winter temperatures can indeed be frigid, so it is important to dress very warmly when visiting Suomenlinna. Nevertheless, wintry Suomenlinna with its snow cover and icy sea has its own charm.
The main sights in Suomenlinna are along the Blue route, which is marked on all our maps, and can also be found from our online guide at guide.suomenlinna.fi. Enjoying some great food in one of the cafes and restaurants in the fortress or stopping by one of the museums is a good way to also warm up on a cold winter day. You can find the opening hours and more information about services from the online guide.
Hopefully you get to visit Suomenlinna again, perhaps in the summer!

Visiting Suomenlinna Sea Fortress was a delightful experience. The historical charm of the fortress, set against the stunning backdrop of the Baltic Sea, created a picturesque setting. The well-preserved structures and informative exhibits offered insight into the area's maritime history. Exploring the labyrinth of tunnels and fortifications added a sense of adventure. The island's serene ambiance and scenic views make Suomenlinna a must-visit destination in Helsinki. A perfect blend of history and natural beauty, it's an ideal escape for both locals and tourists.

Dear Pekka R,
Thank you for your review.
The construction of the dry dock started in 1750. Its history with rich layers started in 1750 when the basins and service buildings of the dock served as a base for the Swedish Coastal Fleet until 1808. As you also mention, today it is used for wooden sailing ships, their repair works and a place for shelter over the Nordic winter.
To dive deeper into the interesting history of Suomenlinna fortress, we suggest a visit to the Suomenlinna Museum or joining a guided walking tour. Along the recommended Blue route, you will also find information boards that give you a chance to find out more about the historical sights.

Thank you for your question and many thanks to all our visitors for sharing their experience on the topic! It is possible to commute from the airport to Helsinki central railway station very smoothly by train. From the central railway station, it's not a long walk (about 1 km) to Kauppatori Market Square where you can take a ferry to Suomenlinna. The ferry takes only about 15 minutes and runs frequently all year round. We recommend using our online guide on our website for checking the schedules and planning your visit in Suomenlinna.

I'll be visiting in early September (somewhere between 9-12 Sept). I checked online that sun sets around 20:00, would it be a good timing (in the sense that I get to stroll around and take pictures) for me to visit the island from 17:00-19:00?

Hi, I think that you should be able to see some attractions and enjoy the sunset too. The Ferry is running and there are food places and Market open too on the Island. Enjoy it :) its worth to take the ferry and see the city from this angle. Post some photos.

How easy is it to access the fortress, museums, island for disabled people? How much walking is involved? Thank you.

Dear OzNana,
Suomenlinna is a slightly challenging environment for visitors with impaired mobility. Exploring the fortress consists mainly of walking. Footpaths are paved with cobblestones, gravel or sand. There are also uneven sections along the route.
Please do consult the accessible route map that is available on our website, in the accessibility section. The map shows you easier routes and points out steep sections.
There is also a pedicab service available in the fortress. You can read more about it on our website.
Many of the museums offer wheelchair access. There are accessible toilets in the fortress. Most restaurants are accessible too. You can find more information on our website in the accessibility section.
We hope that you found this information useful!
Welcome to Suomenlinna!
Best regards,
