- JoeBirmingham, United Kingdom8 contributionsBeen there, done that, tickedIt’s like a bucket list thing, you just have to watch 1 show inside. Watched the ballet there, not the most impressive one , the main hall is not as big as I’d imagined, but it made the exiting very easy. And don’t get too excited on the roof, there’s some obstructions which were bit difficult to see in the white background .Visited April 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 April 2023
- HamiczechOstrava, Czech Republic571 contributionsBeautiful architectureStunning building which u cant miss. It is possible to walk on the roof. It is just at the sea so you have amazing view. On the ground floor there is a cafe with outdoor terrace but when the weather is nice probably you will not find free table. Must be great also inside but we werent.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2023
- MrThomas1981Ipswich, United Kingdom810 contributionsGreat view of the city from the roofThe roof of the opera house is completely open and you are free to wander at your leisure. There are great views from the top and its nice to be part of its architecture for a brief moment. It is VERY icy in winter and you will probably spend more time on your bottom than standing up so be warned if you bruise easily! Great way to soak up some of the atmosphere of the city.Visited March 2023Written 2 May 2023
- StevenKolsterenGroningen, The Netherlands191 contributionsSculpturesque buildingLike most people, we visited the roofs overlooking the fjord. You can climb the slopes and have different views everywhere, but the marble is slippery. In front of the building, in the water lies a stunning sculpture made of glass and iron by a Venetian artist, a modern interpretation of Caspar David Friedrichs famous 19th century painting of a ship wrecked in ice.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 May 2023
- Sct LuciaCopenhagen, Denmark39 contributionsOkay for an evening walkWe walked on outside facade of the opera building. On the other side of the building there was a little playground on the small beach which our kids of 5 and 7 year old found fun to play with. There were some ducks in the sea they tried to feed.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 June 2023
- VinnieLondonDoha, Qatar11,805 contributionsGreat building and viewpoint for OsloOutstanding building located few hundred metres from main Oslo train station. You can go inside when concerts not on and there is a good cafe/restaurant inside with an outside terrace. The interior design is very impressive. The outside roof terrace is a bit of a climb with fantastic views across the city and Oslo Fjord. There are also tours available inside the opera house and make up rooms/behind the scenes workings. Must see part of an Oslo visit.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 June 2023
- thomaslegnerVienna, Austria295 contributionsOne of Europe's most beautiful Opera HousesOslo's Opera must be one of the most beautiful Opera Houses in all of Europe, the architecture is simply stunning. While it may not be able to compete with Europe's great opera houses (Vienna, Milan, etc.) on a musical level, it is definitely worth a visit.Visited July 2023Written 25 July 2023
- JongleurgirlEngland, United Kingdom944 contributionsWalking on the roof of an opera house! The setting of the opera house is quite spectacular, the building all white and glass set into the blue waters is beautiful. We did not go inside but did walk on the roof which was quite surreal. The area is vast and the reflections in the glass makes for fun photos. Please be aware that there are trip hazards due to the dazzling white and the design which makes small almost invisible steps.Visited July 2023Written 30 July 2023
- aspoe093Pierre, South Dakota622 contributionsBeautifulAn incredible building and great architecture. We didn't go to the opera but went inside the opera house. Nice inside but the outside was amazing. I mean who doesn't want to walk on top of an opera house.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2023
- Happy TravellerSydney, Australia5,428 contributionsUnusual building but fits in wellVisited today , and of course had to climb up on the roof for that fabulous view. ( easy climb) it’s easy on the eye. And a nice transition from the water. I imagine in winter it could almost be hidden if the snow came. Inside was vast with clean lines. Coat racks were vast and no security. Couldn’t happen like that in my country. ImpressiveVisited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 August 2023

This building is a wonderful way to make the arts accessible and attractive to the people while enhancing the aesthetic of the city. The gentle inclines to the top of the Opera House were not too rigorous. The panoramic view of the water and city was very worth it!
A couple of caveats:
- if it is icy and snowy, then be very careful. I would not have wanted to climb if the angled stone was a sheet of ice.
- the bright sun against the stone made it difficult to see the different levels of blocks, so both my husband and I both mis-stepped not realizing there was a change in height of the inclined planes of stone. Fortunately, the differences are small and not a normal step height.
- one the side closer to the Munch museum is a more accessible ramp with a hand rail to help someone get up to the top or down
The Opera House bathroom has a fee but there is a separate building as you walk toward the MUNCH museum that is a free public bathroom.

First time at a professional ballet. What a wonderful production. Gorgeous sets and costumes. Would go back to see another show. The building is gorgeous inside and the ability to hike up the outside is super unique. Highly recommend.

We stayed in Thon Opera hotel in Oslo. It takes only five minutes to come to the Norwegian Opera and Ballet House. We didn't have time to enjoy Opera singing, but we as many others enjoyed views of Oslo fjord from the viewpoint at the roof of Opera House

Great place to hang out, see the large foyer. Great view of Munch Museum and the She Lies (floating iceberg) sculpture in the water. Just when you think you reached to top you see there is more -- be careful not to trip as there are "hidden" steps. I took the tour which only gets 4-stars (the outside is much more impressive).

The Norwegian Opera & Ballet building, besides having a very elegant and unique design, is an excellent spot to admire the Oslo harbor, with its many boats and lovely fjord. I recommend climbing up the ramps to the top of the building to get the best views and take beautiful photos.

The architecture of this building allows you to walk on the roof, starting from street level up to a good height with nice views towards the sea, the city and the skyline. You can even bring your lunch and eat it on the roof. It's accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, but be aware of the possibility of stumbling if you have challenges walking or seeing, as the roof is not even (it's designed like that).

An inventive masterpiece along the harbor, it’s cool to walk up to the roof and admire the cityscape. I thought that was an inventive and unique design, and certainly the most popular spot for tourists. Great use of space.

After 7+ hours on the train from Bergen, I arrived in Oslo & checked into my hotel. Then I went for a short stroll down to the waterfront, where I encountered by far the most striking architectural structure in the city - the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet house. I saw lots of people walking, biking, and sunbathing all around the complex, which is a very popular place to be on a sunny day. You're certain to get tons of instagrammable photos just exploring all the different angles of this iconic edifice

This impressive building dominates the waterfront and it is great to be able to walk up and across the roof, with fantastic views. It is equally impressive inside and well worth popping in.

Hello,
you can go from the outside to the top of the roof, its like to walk on a mountain.
From inside the building is no accsess to the roof.
Regards Manong

As I read, many comments said the view from the rooftop is beautiful.
My question is; are we free to go up there or do we have to had an opera ticket?
Thank you.
Written 11 August 2015
No it is free, the building is built in such a way that you can access the roof from the outside! It is broad, and safe, but in the winter it does get a bit slippery! Enjoy the view.
