Beautiful Fortress and Insightful Military Museum
Nice scenic place to take a stroll. Good views of the area and many nice places to take photos. The military museum is also worth a visit, it provides a run through of Norway's military past and present.

    Great views
Castle located around 10 minute walk from city centre next to Quayside. Excellent views across the city and Oslo Fjord. Interesting visitors centre and nice park in grounds including an outside concert venue. You can also see the stables for the regiment which is still active on site. Worth a stroll through linked to a quayside visit.

Perfect for a walk and gain some Norwegian history
Fascinating place to visit and stroll around, 10 minutes from the train station and right on the quay. The views from the fortress wall over the water & city are beautiful, sit and relax on the multiply benches soaking in this historical site, the Resistance Museum is located within the grounds. There are some steep paths with cobblestone.

    Enjoyable Historic Afternoon
Well maintained historical castle. It is free to walk the grounds and outer courtyard. I highly recommend touring the interior. An audio guide explains each room and gives historical facts and stories of those who once inhabited Akershus Fortress. The castle is furnished with lovely period pieces and wonderful artwork. We really enjoyed our visit.

    Decent castle, authenticly presented
Nice and quiet when we went, made a relaxing day taking in the lovely scenery and buildings. The open areas are free as is the small museum. 100 NOK is worth paying for the main buildings.

Fortress as a Prison in recent history
Ancient fortress prominent on the harbourside. Can stroll around the fortress's cobbled grounds. A visit to the Visitors Centre is worthwhile. Not only covers history of the fortress but particularly as a Prison in recent history. The terrible conditions and brief insights into prisoners' daily routine and meal times. It was very much in use in 1920s and 1930s. Finally decommissioned in 1950s.

Interesting museums and a great view of the city and harbor
You can't go in the castle, but it's a nice walk around the bastions and you get a great view of the harbor and there's no charge to walk the grounds. There is a little museum at the visitor's center which told about the queen who had lived there to give context. The Norwegian Resistance Museum does have an entrance fee, but the way everything about the Norwegian resistance movement is presented with dioramas and papers and documents is really well done and worth the admission price. There are guided tours during the summer, so you should check the website for the timing.

    It’s ok
I love exploring old castles but watch where you enter this castle from… that will make a large difference on your experience. There are many ports of entry but some will leave you wondering where you are. The museum is worth it although there is little explanation of the historical or cultural significance of the castle. All entrances are a challenge for strollers and wheelchairs because of the incline and large cobble stones. It’s ok, but of your time is short…. Take a pass.

    To visit 👌
I loved the place, you can spend the whole day there as the castle is big with very wide parc and there are museums there you can visit. I LOVED it. I recommend the oslo pass to enjoy all the museums and transports for free.

    Fortress of Time
Oslo's fortress is worth visiting as there are a number of exhibits to be seen and good pics to be taken from atop the ramparts. You enter the fort for free and then walk around. Many take bike tours here. Highly recommend visiting the Norwegian Resistance Museum which covers the Occupation of Norway during WWII and the Resistance Movement's activities against Nazi rule.

Nice but there was a festival going on so much of the area was cut off unless you bought a ticket for the event. From the areas that I was able to see it was a really nice site

Excellent value for money (It is free). However there was so much restoration work going on when we were there, there was not a lot to see.
But what there was to see, was the view over the harbour, and that was worth the visit.
It was not easy to pick up all the history, the shop was closed, so I couldn't get a guide book.
I would also mention to any other senior citizen, with health issues, there is a respectable amount of walking including inclines.

I didn't join a tour, which would have added some useful information, but spent a couple hours wandering to see the many buildings and detail of the architecture.

From the City Hall or Radhus, I walked to this attraction. There are 2 Statues noted as I walked to this attraction, one of which is that of US former president, Teddy Roosevelt.

The path leading to the Castle and Fortress is uphill and might be tough for those with mobility issues. There are museums and a Castle to visit here but one has to pay entrance fees to go inside. Only the outside areas are FREE, There are sections here to view the areas below: the huge Cruise Ship docked nearby, other smaller boats, the park with Statues, etc.

We walked through in route to the ferry. It was a nice enough walk and the views were pretty but I can’t really say it was that interesting. I’m glad that it was free!

Akershus Castle and Fortress is kind of a must visit when in Oslo. You can wander around the Fortress for free, taking in the views of Oslo and Oslo Fjord, checking out old cannons, and visiting the myriad of other buildings in the complex.
The Castle itself you need to pay to enter, but like most of the museums in Oslo it is quite cheap. Well worth it for a quick look through a genuine Medieval Castle, complete with suits of armour, old tapestries and swords. Be aware, the Castle closes at 4pm with last entry about 3.40pm. The Fortress grounds are open a bit longer.
