Hidden gem in plain sight

I have visited this castle last Saturday with a larger group of co-workers and it was way beyond my expectations.
First, we had a medieval lunch, with local dishes in place ever since 500 years ago, soup, pork steak and apple strudel (using nothing but a knife and the hands) and beer. I found it really authentic and it also tasted good.
Then, we were given a tour of the castle, with the water fountain, the inner tower, the “scharlatan” place and the rooms used for various purposes. Plenty of details provided by our guide (a Canadian lady now living in Germany), plenty of reasons to take pictures, plenty of nice memories. Plus, many people around were dressed up as hundreds of years ago, with different roles. Again, really authentic! Excellent travel back in time.

Wonderful Castle, Must See
8/2019
This castle, dating back to the 1300's, is one of the few hilltop castles still in its original condition. The tour of the castle is well worth the entry fee as it really gives you the sense of what these castles were like in their original condition. The wooden floors creek with every step, the kitchen still is fired up so the smoke smell still lingers and many of the rooms have small sections of the wall exposed showing you how the construction and insulation was make with mud/straw. One of the first rooms you can visit is the well room. The well here is 96 meters deep and you can fill a bucket of water and dump it into the well. After waiting for many seconds the water finally reaches the bottom with a loud, echoing splash. The tour is not guided so you can take your time exploring each of the many rooms and displays open to the tour. Finally, a must. is to climb the 32 meter high castle keep where on a clear day you can see all the way to Frankfurt. There is also a Falconry exhibit with shows Tue-Thurs and Sat & Sun at 3 PM although were not able to visit it.. Try an come on a weekend as they offer different exhibitions/events from Mar thru Dec. The day we were there they were demonstrating medieval dancing in one of the larger rooms. There are also days where they display bread making, leather pouch making, shooting bows/crossbows and sword fighting along with many festival events. As we love castles this was truly a great find and is highly recommended.

This medieval castle is definitely worth a visit. I really enjoyed that you can roam about anywhere in the castle and take pictures. The tower offers great views of the countryside.

Worth a visit

Great views, good food and great markets at Christmas and Easter time and more. Visit the torture chamber, walk up the tower and check out the well, entrance fee is ok and continue your visit to Büdingen to visit the old town. Definitely recommend to spare 3hours for the castle.

One of the best castles in Germany

The Ronneburg castle is a real treasure and worth a visit if you love the medieval history. The castle commands a high position and is visible for miles from all directions. My estimate is a 30-40 minute drive from Frankfurt. There is ample parking and also a wonderful restaurant. Allow at least 2 hours to explore the main castle which charges a small entrance fee. For amazing views climb to tower and if you want to learn how even the quietest person was made to talk check out the torture chambers.
There is also a very deep water hole, the emergency water supply for the castle and a falcon show.

Several times a year the local Ronneburg association put on a weekend where the entire castle is moved back in time and patriots come in dressed in medieval clothing.

The restaurant offers an array of castle feasts on select days.

Comfortable shoes are recommended.

A must to visit.

Amazing for kids and lunch afterwards

Our boys loved visiting the castle. It's got such an authentic feel with dozens of bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. There is a well which is probably 100m deep that you can play with, a blacksmith workshop, a torture chamber, towers, and archery. We didn't have a guided tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had lunch under the trees outside which was very enjoyable. The boys played in the courtyard while we waited for the food. Make sure your kids buy some swords and shields in the curio store at the entrance. Puts them into character. They absolutely loved the outing.

Our family's favorite castle

We first visited Burg Ronneburg 20 plus years ago when we were stationed with the Army in Hanau. Our kids were 7 and 3. We would visit Ronneburg during their festivals and have wonderful memories. My husband and I had the opportunity to return to Ronneburg and enjoyed strolling down memory lane as well as making new memories. The English speaking staff at the entrance was very pleasant and when we told them our story they were thrilled to have us back. A small gift shop is at the entrance and a small entrance fee is required. There is not a time limit for how long you stay. We were able to climb to the top of the tower, without small children in tow, during our recent visit. 142 steps up a winding staircase and two wide ladders will get you to the top. The view is well worth the climb! There are two smaller towers that are just as fun to climb. Make sure to visit the well first and pour a bucket of water down. Count the seconds on how long it takes to get to the bottom for the big splash. A restaurant is on site as well as clean restrooms. We texted our daughters a picture of the entrance and they knew exactly where we were. We have been to many, many castles in our travels but Ronneburg holds a special place in our family's heart. We look forward to visiting again.

Worth a visit

Pity we went there late evening when it was already dark, so we must have lost most of the charm that this place has to offer. Nevertheless our medevial themed dinner was an unforgettable exprience. The food and the beer were quite good, although we must have had too much of it. Beware you can't use forks...only a dagger and your hands are allowed.

Very interesting castle with wonderful view and food

The drive to this castle is very scenic and interesting - only 45 minutes north west from Frankfurt, you see beautiful farms and green fields. The castle has a 90 meter deep well where one can throw water and hear the sound few seconds later to see the distance/time it takes water to travel down. Sometimes there is a magic show at the castle (on this Sunday we got lucky).
The castle has a small restaurant which offers casual seating but very delicious food as well as excellent service! We were pleasantly surprised by the superb service after having seen many castles in the region! Absolutely worth a visit on a sunny day!
