Very Little Known about this Man
10/2018 • Perhe
Very few people know about this man without doing some research but I learned about him in primary school while having no clue that he died in the town in which I was born. There is also a plaque in his honor in the basement of St Pauls Cathedral in London. Amazing the things you can find sometimes.

Sir Philip Sidney
10/2013 • Soolomatka
Zutphen is mainly famous in English history as the place where, in 1586, the mortally wounded Sir Philip Sidney gave his water bottle to another mortally wounded soldier, because "Thy need is greater than mine". On the occasion of the twinning of Zutphen and Shrewsbury (where Sidney was educated), a magnificent statue was erected. It's in the public gardens off a street called Coehoornsingel.

To get there, once you get out of the station turn left and keep on for about 200 yards, until you come to a crossroads. (You'll know it's the right crossroads if you can see the Baudartius College on the other side of the road,) At the crossroads turn left and keep straight on, past the park with the lake and the fountain. After about 300 yards you'll come to a biggish roundabout. Turn right onto Coehoornsingel, and after about 50 yards you'll see the statue facing you, among the trees on the other side of the street.

Other memorials to Philip Sidney in Zutphen are a street called Sidneystraat, on the far side of the gardens where the statue is, a plaque on the mediaeval Kruittoren tower (near the station), erected by the Dutch P G Wodehouse society, and a memorial in roughly the place where he received his fatal wound. The entry for Sir Philip Sidney in Wikipedia says exactly where, and has a photograph.
