- MikeyB62London, United Kingdom123 contributionsWear proper shoes.Worth the effort if you like hiking. It’s a 2hr hike from the car park at the roadside, or a half hour walk from the beach car park. We took the easy option and drove the track down to the beach. It’s a steep and rough concrete road, but quite drivable if you are competent, about 5.5kms. The walk up to the falls is not level, and is a rocky, hands on scramble in places. It is also wet and muddy in a few places. We wore proper hiking shoes. Sturdy trainers would be ok. It’s not a walk for flip flops (thongs) or fashion shoes.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 June 2023

The hike through the gorge is not for the faint of heart but the views (both driving and hiking there) are quite amazing. There are different route options. You can opt to see the waterfall (which we did) and the beach (which we also did) but it will take a bit longer. Wear close toed shoes! Bring water! And a change of clothes for when you’re done.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 June 2023
- Laurynas V1 contributionWorth it!Very nice views. We were walking up from the bottom so the hike was 30 mins only. Views are nice though. If you would go from up and go down, hike would be 1,5 h. I recommend to go with small car because roads are narrow. We were with Fiat 500 so the choice was very good. Hike road is quite good I think you can just take regular sandals, dont need to have hike shoes. The hike was worth every step and it is not a hard one.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 22 July 2023

Not too long, not too short either, this hike is just the sweet spot. A little hard to get to the start (we started at the parking by the beach). It is a remote area with not phone network coverage, so think about some safety procedures and how to communicate in case of an accident.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023
- Sweeton CCanada102 contributionsLovely hike.Lovely, peaceful walk, a bit muddy in places. We went in February on a Friday and there was lots of room to park up by the road. I would recommend driving down the lane to the Venetian Bridge as it is a steep hike back up and not a bad drive down. There is parking for a few cars down there. The walk itself is well marked and well worn. There are little bridges over the creek but some of the path was flooded so good hiking boots are a must. We found it took longer than indicated and although we walked down for about 1.45hr we never reached the waterfall as we knew the hike back up would take even longer. Even so, it was very pretty and lots of little waterfalls along the way.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2024

Amazing hike! It’s a round trip so where you park your car is where you’ll need to return to. It involves many twists and turns, different surfaces and obstacles! Super fun for couples and independent walkers mostly. There’s a waterfall midway, but it’s small, so the area does get crowded fast.. but the walk highlights many different landscapes and terrains. At one end is a private beach, ultra clear waters and stone pyramids built by visitors and the other end is the main road, leads mostly down then gorge.. wear hiking shoes as you’ll need the grip.

We got there about 9:30 and were early enough to park down near the start of the walk at Lachana Bridge. The parking attendant explained that there’s only about 5 spaces as they have to leave room for emergency vehicles and that in busy periods they may not allow any parking down there, so we were lucky!
We only walked to the waterfall, which took about an hour and ten minutes each way, even going uphill on the way back. The walk is shaded for approx 95% so we didn’t need hats, and actually they would have been cumbersome trying to keep them on in the welcome breeze.
There are three or four rock formations that were trickier to climb over (where you might need both hands) but we managed it with relative ease.
The waterfall was beautiful, the water cold but refreshing. Underfoot is stony. The way the water also trickles down the moss on the side of the rock is lovely, too.
Total distance there and back was 5km. I imagine if people had to park at the top and walk down the concrete path it could take an extra 20-30 minutes each way. It is unshaded and not picturesque.
It was €3 each to get in and you can pay using contactless payment methods.
We had lunch at Platia Sparta in Exo Moulinara, just up the hill from the Gorge. We thought it very good value for money and it was lovely sitting under the green leaf canopy.
There’s also a great souvenir shop called My Sitia Secrets just opposite the restaurant with locally produced olive oils, wines, soaps and jewellery amongst other things.

The beach was a mess and not worth the drive frankly

Visiting E Crete end of May. Assume park at stone bridge and avoid concrete path back to the car. Mrs H and myself are both in 60's but are also Lake District Walkers. (Where we live !) Do I need a map of Gorge ( Mountain Rescue bang on about it quite rightly !) So could 2 old codgers walk to beach and back in 3 - 4 hrs, starting early?

me and my friends walked to the beach and back in almost 5hours today (all in 20's). We stopped many times to take pictures and we also stopped by the waterfall to swim there. It was a very nice walk although some parts were challenging, so we definitely recommend proper trekking shoes as stones are quite slippery. Good luck :-)

Hi sorry for delay ,don't check here very often
Just revisited map because we did a lot that week !
We had motorbikes and dropped off main road at the spot marked "richtis snack" on the satellite map ..I can see the bridge on the map but we didn't go that way.I think we parked near there and walked on
Its marked well with arrows and its quite obvious if you've took a wrong turn within a few feet .
A lot of it is in shade as well so its all quite steady .We are mid 50s and there's nothing too hard, the odd bit with slippy rocks where i chose the bum method .Your timing will be fine It seems lots just like to walk to the waterfall then return .We cracked on to the sea which is lovely and about as far as you've come already with shaded picnic spots.
There's a more challenging gorge South of this location on the south coast if you want to check it out.I'll have to revisit for the name etc...

Grazie

Hi,
To find the entrance go to google maps and search for:
Richtis gorge Exo Mouliana
If you are with a car you can drive down the narrow road from the entrance and park when you see the old bridge. This will save you about 20min walking each way.
The terrain is uneven rocky/muddy, not too difficult but not a walk in the park either. Wear sturdy shoes, tennis shoes generaly OK but if you are uncertain and inexperienced wear hiking boots to protect your ankles. It is possible that you will wet your feet on the way, although most people manage to walk the gorge without getting their shoes wet. In general, avoid visiting with children under 10 years old.
