My initial plan in Hämeenlinna was just to visit the Häme Castle but at the ticket office I realized I had an hour to spend before the next scheduled castle tour, so I decided to get the combined ticket (19 euros) to check out the Military museum next door as well. I thought some 30–45 minutes would suffice in the museum, but it turned out I had to come back later to see the rest of the exhibition after the castle tour.

The museum boasted a generous collection of modern and historic military weapons, equipment, vehicles, and other paraphernalia (medals in particular,) spread out on three floors of the main building, and also in an outdoor exhibition area. The items were presented with plentiful information in form of multimedia displays, photos, and texts.

The area can be explored unguided, and it offers things to examine for several hours for those wanting a deep-dive into military history of Finland. There is also a cafeteria and a souvenir shop, as usual.

I visited on a quiet winter’s afternoon arriving about 2pm. The museum is quite large, being spread across 3 floors with a large outdoor area and indoor exhibit hall of artillery guns on display. I spent most of the remaining time here until closing, leaving just before 5pm. If you intend to see all of what's on offer, like I did, I wouldn't recommend arriving after 2pm during the winter season there wouldn't be enough time to read and see everything on offer.

The museum itself is housed in a large building. Walk across the courtyard (parking) and you'll see the entrance - it's well signed. There is a small shop, together with café with cloakroom area with admissions/info desk. The lady who welcomed me in was pleasant and directed me in, explaining where I needed to go.

The museum starts off explaining the development of the Finnish army, from late 1700s through to the near present day, focusing on signals, artillery, and engineer elements and how these changed across periods of time with technological advancements.

The first hall focuses on the period up until the late 19th century, with the second moving into the first world war, interwar period, and winter wars of the 1940s before finishing with the cold war and present day on the third floor. There are lots of exhibits to look at in display cabinets and information boards as one goes round. Majority of text is available in English, with a few objects only having information in Finnish.

The lighting is good within, and it is simple to follow round each segment of the exhibition. It’s all been well kept and is quite modern as a museum, although dont expect huge number of interactives for children or high technical graphical displays. I did see some colouring in books with some uniforms children could try on, on the top floor.

There's lot of information to look over and I learnt a lot whilst taking my time. Very interesting if you have an interest in military history and development of the Finnish army. The outside area comprises of mostly 20th century, much of its cold war, artillery guns and vehicles like trucks and artillery carriages. I spent about 30 minutes looking around this part of the museum.

I enjoyed my visit. It’s an easy walk from the main station in Hameenlinna - only about 30 minutes and half of that is through parks and alongside the riverbank. Quite pretty.

As residents of Hämeenlinna, this is one museum we had not visited earlier.

The whole exhibition is extremely comprehensive, with many sections from early days until the modern times, the quality of the exhibits is amazing!

For a short visit of around 2 hours you can certainly get a good overview, but to fully appreciate and understand the exhibition, many visits would be needed.

Having said that, it is still a wonderful and enlightening exhibition, even for the casual vistor, and certainly is highly recommended,

Visited on Sunday noon. We were the only customers and had the three-story building for ourselves. Plenty of items and info for many visits. I’m glad they had this history oasis open even there are so few visitors.

The museum exhibits artillery and history of wars and defense forces. The indoor and outdoor exhibitions are very elaborated. The Not a must visit place but very interesting none the less. If you plan to visit this along with the Häme castle get the combo ticket to save some money.

Interesting if you love history. Has a lot of cool items in display. The display cases could use a discription of the items in English though.

There's so much stuff in this museum it'll take a good long time to go through all of it. If you are at all interested in military history, here's pretty much everything you want to know in Finland. Combine this with a visit in Parola Armour Museum and voila!

A really good museum if your interest is the military history of Finland. There are three floors to see all packed with good exhibits. This will take a good 2 hours + to go round.
