Brotherly right next to the Synagogue

The big mosque in Paramaribo is the headquarters of the Surinam Islamic Society. The current mosque was built in 1984, the first one at this location in 1929. It looks in itself attractive (especially at night) but fits less well in the city architecture than the Synagogue - which is right next door! A symbol of the fairly successful Surinam multicultural society.

Looks impressive from exterior

We weren’t allowed in to have a look inside the mosque, although we weren’t given a specific reason why not.
From the outside the building is very impressive and it is amazing architecture.
It is amazing how this place is situated right next to the synagogue.
I am sure inside it is just as impressive although I cannot comment.

A very impressive bilding

I did not go into the building, but as I walked around downtown it was striking how the mosque stood out from different perspectives.

Not so sure this mosque fits into the city architecture too well. The mosque is huge and quite nice in it self, but does it have to be located here?

Small mosque in city centre
1/2019 • Perhe
One of the staff kindly took us around this mosque for a small donation. He told us the history of the building and showed a photo and sculpture from the wooden mosque which was previously on the same spot. Quite plain inside compared to some mosques. The main factor of note is that it stands right beside the main Synagogue of Paramaribo and they get along really well.

Next to the synagogue
11/2018 • Kaverit
The formal muslim community in Paramaribo dates back only to the 1920s. The current structure was completed in 1984. It replaced a simpler wooden structure completed in 1932. Supposedly, Mohammed Ali visited the mosque in late 1970s. Our group was informed that the mosque shares a common parking lot with the adjacent Jewish Synagogue. A hopeful sign of tolerance!

Interesting Style
10/2018 • Soolomatka
Ive seen many mosques around the world, but this is pergaps the most interesting design. It has four minarets but is built onto stilts. It was closed when I visited, shortly after the time I expected Friday prayers, and no one around. I don't want to take issue with Saronic from Switzerland's post, but you can't deduce Muslims came from sub-continent. More likely to have been Javanese, possibly. It is unusual to be sited next to a synagogue.

Beautiful on the outside
8/2018 • Soolomatka
This mosque is built in the traditional stily with majestic minarets and domes. It was not open for visitors when I was there, but looking through a window, the interior looked fairly basic. An interesting feature is lits location right next door to the Synagogue in the city.

Keizerstraat Mosque

The mosque is beautiful from the outside. The inside is basic. What makes it special is that it is located next to the synagogue. You are able to visit the mosque every day. The administrator is located behind the mosque and will show you around and tell you as many stories as you'd like to hear.
