Beautiful memorial to WWII victims
4/2021
This solemn monument stands along the western Kremlin walls by the Alexander Gardens.
The monument is made of red granite with a helmet and flag in honor of all who lost their lives during WWII.

Sacred for Russians
12/2020
I come here quite often but I love it most in winter. I always remember that it was in winter of 1941 that a miracle happened - Nazis were stopped literally on the outskirts of Moscow. Had they captured it the Kremlin and the Red Square would have been levelled to the ground and the city flooded. That was the idea.
We come here both to remember those who saved us and to have some fun - watch change of guards that usually takes place every hour. We do not compare it with ceremonies in other countries and we do not think whether the monument is more beautiful than, say, in Arlington or not.
For us it's irrelevant. It's our History and our Memory and we will only thank you sincerely if you come and stay here even just for a couple of minutes.

Every hour on the hour
8/2019
Every hour on the hour the big attraction in the Alexander Garden is the Changing of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin walls. Due to the ceremony by the Kremlin Regiment and the crowd of spectators not much can be seen then of the monument itself, which is best visited in between, when there are just two Guards of Honour standing next to it.

The solemn and surprisingly modest monument is made from dark red porphyry, on which is a bronze sculpture of a laurel branch and a soldiers helmet on top of a banner. It commemorates Soviet soldiers, who lost their lives during WW II.

There are Tombs to Unknown Soldiers in dozens of countries around the world. It is part of a movement, which got started at London's Westminster Abbey after WW I, soon followed by one at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Almost always there is a Guard of Honour standing by the tomb with a ceremonial Change of the Guards.

Beautiful monument

Very nice elegant memorial to the soldiers who died during World War II. It’s located in the Alexander Garden (Александровский Сад) right by the Kremlin wall. You can’t miss it. It has a big sign in Russian “1941 павшим за родину 1945», eternal fire, flowers on the ground and soldiers that stand next to its sides.

Skip the change of guard unless you have plenty of time during your Kremlin visit.

This solemn monument is the resting place of a soldier who died in December 1941; 41 Km away from Moscow, the closest the nazis were able to get their army to the capital.

South of the tomb, a row of red urns crowned with a large bronze five points star, contains earth from the hero cities where important battles were fought.

Change of guard video available at YouTube.

Nicely build. Beautiful monument. Honour to the soldiers. The army people who stand beside the monument is nuce to see. Just near the kremlin wall.

An understated but fitting memorial
7/2019
This relatively simply designed tomb is a fitting tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and future.

The tomb is guarded in the day by two guards and an officer who checks on them, it is worth staying around to watch this as it is an entertaining spectacle.

One point of interest our Bridge To Moscow tour guide told us is the large boxes that line the wall where the tomb is located have the names of large battles from the war and contain soil from the actual battlegrounds.

A place ideally located to pay a visit to and pay your respects to those that gave everything.

Nicely Done
10/2019
As a former soldier myself I like to visit the tomb of the unknown soldier in every country I visit. Access to the one in Moscow is free of charge and is just outside of Red Square. The tribute is well done and if you go, make sure you arrange to be there on the hour so you can enjoy the changing of the guard ceremony. This is not an all day event by any means, so plan other stuff and add this as a stop along the way.

This is a solemn but striking monument to The Unknown Soldier.

Changing of the guard is on the hour and worth a watch though, to be honest, it is fairly plain and straightforward (compared to the theatrics in Taiwan) and definitely nowhere near as crisp and precise as the guard at Arlington Cemetery, Washington
