A Tomb, a mosque and a guest house
12/2019
The Bada Gumbad structure is U – shaped with the dome on the southern side. The mosque is on the western side and the assembly hall or the guest house is on the eastern house. All the three structure stands on a high plinth and is approachable by a broad flight of stairs from the south side. There is an open courtyard in the middle.

The huge dome of the Bara Gumbad is supported by a square structure. It is built of grey sand stone.
The exterior of Bada Gumbad is relieved with recessed arches and traces of red and black stones can also be seen. From the outside the structure looks tow storied but actually it is a single storied structure.

A small mosque stands on the north west corner of the Bada Gumbad. Some historians believe that Bada Gumbad was built as a gateway to the mosque but generally it is considered as a tomb with some unique feature. Sadly, the occupant of the tomb can no longer be identified, but he must have been an officer of high rank during Sikandar Lodi’s rule. The three domed mosque is approached from the east through a five arched entrance. The central arch is the largest of the five and the size of the arch diminishes as moves away from the centre. Built in 1494 the interiors of the mosque are richly decorated with stuccoes and frescoes, consisting of floral & geometric designs and Quranic inscriptions. Tapering minarets on the back corners and jharokha windows are some of the unique feature of the Bada Gumbad Mosque.

Opposite the Bada Gumbad Mosque is an elongated hall, which probably served as a Guest House. It is devoid of ornamentation and a striking contrast with the mosque.

A blend of many styles, the ruins of this building give a clear idea of how grand it must have been in its heydays. One can see a blend of Indian and Arabic styles with many features adapted in later styles like the Mughal pattern. The beautiful carving of Quranic inscriptions are still visible. In short a delight for architecture and history students. Wish more information was provided on boards for visitors without guides.

This is a very recognisable monument as over the years it has served as the location for many shoots based in Delhi (we got to see one too).

The Lodhi Gardens like the Mehrauli Archaeological Park are the home to many monuments spanning Delhi's myriad history. Entry to both is free of cost and both are must visit places. The Lodhi Gardens are at a walking distance from the Jor Bagh metro station on the Yellow line. The majestic Safdarjung tomb is a mere 5 minutes walk away.

Lodi era building and mosque
12/2019
The Bada Gumbad is a Lodi Dynasty era building that comprises a mosque and what’s thought to be a large building that’s either intended to be a tomb or a gateway into the mosque. Some of the nicest features include the deceptive double storey that’s actually single, the fluted minarets that look like precursors of the Qutub Minar design, and the richly decorated arches of the mosque.

This building is set in the lovely Lodi gardens and is a popular photo spot, especially it seems for wedding couples. Worth visiting along with the nearby Shish Gumbad. Both are photogenic.
