St. Teresa was a mystic, this museum is about mysticism
7/2018 • Kaverit
One of the historical and religious reasons to visit Avila is this was the birthplace of St. Teresa and where she studied in a Carmelite convent. There are lots of places related to her here but this is really the place to learn about mysticism which was her religious passion. Very interesting on many levels.

If you are into Mysticism, This is your Best Bet

The Center near the church for St Teresa takes one on a journey for an individual. While it was a bit much for me personally, I can see how someone into mysticism would absolutely love this place. You be gin by looking at several different people and things that tie the world together and end with St John of the Cross.

Mysticism Interpretation Centre

Teresa de Ahumada, the most famous inhabitant of Avila in 16th century (and probably most famous ever), would go on to become the great mystic, writer and Church reformer, Saint Teresa. She set out to reform the Carmelite order, energetically travelling by mule across the entire Spain, sleeping with a log for a pillow, to establish convents of barefoot Carmelites throughout the country.

Partially in her honor, Avila`s Mysticism Interpretation Centre is the only centre of its kind in Europe and its aim is to introduce visitors to the phenomenon of mysticism. It stands as a compendium of universal mysticism and a work of mystic art. It is located very close to the Convent of St Teresa and inside is separated into four rooms, which coincide with the four universal themes into which the creators have divided mysticism: tradition, knowledge of self - the place for being with oneself, enlightenment - that of union with God and action - the return of mysticism to the world. If one can not find story and exponents interesting, it is worthwhile visiting for arhitecture lovers for its great interiors and exteriors. Entrance is free.

A wonderful museum for anyone who is interested in the spiritual life
7/2017 • Pariskunnat
We visited this place in 2006 and it has remained in my mind ever since. The displays are simple and powerful, condensing mystical experience in words and images, moving from earth-based religions up to the divine heights and then finishing right where we are, in ordinary life. I would love to return some day and meanwhile hope that this little centre can thrive, perhaps even expand. I was inspired by what I encountered there.

This is a small museum that is also an international center for the study of mysticism. There are yearly conferences here. The center is arranged as an immersive experience toward understanding the process of attaining enlightenment. It moves you from the bottom floor of physical reality and the practice of various religions toward the top floor of enlightenment. It is a very unusual museum.
