Ter Apel Monastery
9/2020
"Klooster Ter Apel" is now a Museum Monastery. It's very interesting to know about the history and what all happened in this monastery. There is a herb garden in the courtyard. A part of the wall is new ( glass corridor ) filled with exposition. It's a beautiful monastery in a woody area

Time for some silence

This beautiful monastery is located between the woods. It's a very nice and serene place to be, it's unfortunately not always opened to visit. But still there is a lot you van enjoy around it as the woods and the park around it are very beautiful too

The only monastery of its kind in Northern Europe.

Excellent place to visit with a stunning herb garden. If you book a tour the local guides (volunteers) will tell you about the history and the architectural details of the building. The money raised by the tours will go towards the preservation of the monastery.

Hidden gem in Groningen

A visit to this monastery was already for a while on my list to do. Yesterday I finally went there and it was really amazing. Spent 1,5 hours wondering through the herbgarden, church, and other rooms. The atmosphere is magical, there is interesting information to read. And also the forest around the monastery is really nice with small paths next to cute small rivers. I would recommend it to go here!

No English signage!!!
5/2017 • Pariskunnat
Wonderful building with beautifully restored parts, but this must be the only UNESCO world heritage site I have ever visited that is entirely devoid of information signage in English. The only English signage was a negative "don't sit here". Come on guys - fix this. It is not difficult.

Attractive building
4/2017 • Soolomatka
The building is attractive, even though large parts have been renewed recently. This is probably one of the most complete old abbeys in the northern Netherlands. Almost the entire abbey can be visited. The church with its 'doksaal' (which apparently translates as 'rood') is the highlight. The vaults in the attic are also a nice sight. There are some medieval religious sculptures, and also some old utensils, such as a German frying pan. There are explanations about stained glass and about the costumes worn by the different religious orders.

nice venue but not terribly well managed

Lovely building, with interesting blend of new buildings and the old monastry.
Sadly, on the day we visited the place was overrun with Open University guests, who swamped the venue and spoilt the fun for paying visitors. These things happen and staff tried to deal with the situation, but big OU money clearly talked!
We rushed our visit and some of the spaces were closed off, available only to their important group.
The current klooster is a great example of modern, yet sympathetic infills around the courtyard garden to replace the buildings lost over time.
Nice venue, but worth enquiring about commercial events before you travel or pay to enter.

A peek into history
Sadly, not very much of the old abbey remains, but what there still is gives us a good impression of this outpost of civilisation that helped develop the area in the Middle Ages.
