Opening the Hangö Port to winter traffic in the 1870's increased the need for more seafarer's safety, but it took until 1906 (and a few shipwrecks) before the Bengtskär lighthouse was built. You can reach the island by tour-operated boats from Hangö and from Kasnäs. On the island you are welcomed by a presentation (choose if in English, Swedish or Finnish) and then you can freely wander about. There is a small museum explaining the bloody battle of July 26th, 1941 when the Soviets attempted to take the island. You can see how the lighthousekeepers and their families lived, and you can of course climb the almost 300 steps to the top of the lighthouse for breathtaking views of the Gulf of Finland. There are two cafés and you can also stay overnight. For nature the island is only rocks but we spotted a seal on the way out, lots of seabirds and on the island Dunlins (Calidris alpina) with their chicks. Visiting Bengtskär is a day well spent, and you also support the upkeep of the buildings. Weather reservation apply - on a windy day landing is difficult or impossible.

Easy to say: you just have to see this place by your own eyes, because the atmosphere here in the lighthouse is far more better than it is in these beautiful pictures. The ride to the lighthouse could be rough but it is absolutelu worth it (went through Kasnäs - Rosala). The pure and rugged milieu is something what everyone should see at least once in a lifetime.

I took a ferry from Hanko to go to the lighthouse. The boat trip in itself was nice, with good lohikeitto on the way to the island. You can smoke on the ferry, just ask the crew!!!
Once we reached the island, we got a very interesting and complete talk from a guide (with lots of details and anecdotes) and then were left on our own to enjoy.
It was good to climb up the lighthouse, visit the museum and discover the island. You learn a lot, the place is beautiful and you can enjoy a cup of tea from the coffee shop.
This is a wonderful place for adults and children. You can learn a lot about the history of Finland and discover a beautiful place.

We booked a boat tour from Hanko marina to the Bengtskär lighthouse which is the tallest lighthouse in whole Northern Countries and also the southernmost tourist attraction in Finland. There are also a few other piers in south-western Finland that offer boat tours towards Bengtskär. Price for adult was affordable.
On boat we were offered delicious fish soup that was included to the tour price. Staff was great (friendly and helpful). Journey was enjoyable and we were lucky to have sunny day for our trip. Nice scenery of beautiful Finnish archipelago.
The boat moored to the Bengtskär pier and we were informed about the departure time. We were all first asked to gather to a one spot where the guide told us colourfully about the lighthouse and its history. Narrative was available at least in finnish, swedish and english. The islet is not big and it is definitely a rough rock but the lighthouse is easy to reach though.
At the lighthouse there is a small shop, a café and toilet facilities. You can also send postcards with a special postmark. Parts of the lighthouse had informative boards, posters end items about historical events that occured at the islet. One of the most important events was in 1941 during WW2 when Soviet Union tried unsuccessfully to invade the islet. There are still huge marks visible of the attack.
At the top of the lighthouse one can see a lovely 360 degree view of the surroundings. The lamp room, however, is very hot during the sunny summer day.
Highly recommended. Increases peace of mind.
If you book early enough you could have a chance to stay overnight in the private chambers of the lighthouse. All other visitors will depart at 7PM latest, and then those who spend the night there will have the whole islet just for themselves.

If you are interested in history, lighthouses and beautiful landscapes, this place is absolutely worth visiting. There are incredible views, especially if you'll climb all the stairs up in the tower of the lighthouse. And it is quite hot up there...
Even though the place is pretty small, there is a lot to explore and time goes quickly. Be sure to get aboard in time, so the ferry doesn't have to come back to get you... ;)

We were lucky to reach the destination in mid-October, because the rocky island does not let people in on stormy days. Choose a day to visit during off-season, book your transportation from Wilson Charter, and get the entire island for your own group!

Fascinating history - both from the construction phase, the life on the very small island and the heroic and successful defence when Russian forces tried to capture it during the second world war. Highly recommended.

I was visiting this lighthouse with my family last month. One of the most relaxing trips I've done, since it's in the middle of the ocean, and it gets so dark and quiet in the evening. I'd for sure suggest staying over night, rather than making the couple hour visit.
I also have to say how surprised I was when we went to have some dinner. I have a vegan diet, and places such as this might not be the most vegan-friendly, which I completely understand. It's hard to store food for different kinds of special diets in an island like this. But boy how wrong was I. The dinner and also all the other meals we had were amazing! Well-thought, tasty and filling. I even had my own desserts baked for me after every meal, which has never happened. The head chef also made the effort to come to me everytime she spotted me in the dining are, to tell me more about the ingredients of the food. This left me with heart warming feeling, I felt so welcomed and grateful.

Hello lovely peeps! I’m planning to visit Bengtskar from Helsinki this weekend. From what I understood so far from digging info, I need to reach Hanko first and take the ferry. These are my questions:
1.What are the times and how long does it take to reach the island.
2. Do I need to book in advance the ferry?
3. Any info you think I need is appreciated.
Thank youuuuuu!
I was thinking of staying there but couldn’t find the site to book the accommodation. :(
