Beautiful folly

A lovely place for a walk - the grounds and folly are surrounded by countryside and woodland that you can walk for miles in. Good dog walking territory

My first visit as a NT member.
10/2019 • Pariskunnat
Lyveden new bield is situated about a 15 minutes drive from the attractive town of Oundle and is well signposted. The approach track to the NT property is hard going being very bumpy and it seemed to take us an eternity to reach the large car park. We reached the reception area and were handed maps and were asked whether or not we would like to use the free hand held terminals that when the correct button is pushed at the location shown on the map, this gives some history and is very helpful. We immediately passed a beautiful little tearoom which seemed very reasonable price wise and walked over to the uncompleted 400 year old building. The whole building takes about ten minutes to look around and was very interesting listening to the commentary whilst investigating. The grounds are delightful and are full of wildlife...we saw many forms of dragon fly and there are little manuals placed around the grounds explaining what these are. Further along is the orchard but be warned....today was muddy and pathways are made up of worn away grass, I nearly fell over on one occasion. We were only there for about 45 minutes and it was immediately evident being a new NT member was just how well this property was well looked after....everywhere was spotless. NT members enter free of charge but for 2 non member adults this would have cost £18. It is really worth joining and I cannot wait to continue to enjoy beautiful properties and gardens like these. Visited 19th October 2019.

Mother and I came here for an afternoon out. The food in the cafe was really lovely and the attraction was well-presented. Well done to all :)

Really interesting and lovely for tea too

Whenever I am in the area, I always go to Lyvden. Love the tea room, the history of the place, and the second hand book shop too. Wonderful. Well done National Trust!

Interesting Building
10/2019
The building is interesting and the grounds have lots of walks that you could take on a good weather day, we didn't stay long because it was a wet cloudy day and everyone will have a different opinion of this National Trust property. The location is quite remote and the access road is long and not at all well kept. We had to drive very slowly to avoid damage to our car and that's just not acceptable as this is a paid for attraction.

Interesting day out
9/2019 • Kaverit
My parents insisted they wanted to go here whilst on holiday in the area, having being bribed with a chippy tea I went with them. The road up to the car park (I say road) is a bumpy track that if you’ve got a low down car you might want to look at before hand. Once we got there we were greeted by extremely friendly staff who could not do enough to help us. The audio guide is a must, if you are interested in the history and why it was left unfinished. I found it really fascinating, soon forgetting I was there only on the promise of chips. As well as the house, there is a lovely walk through an orchard and the grounds. The cafe is very nice and a reasonable price, we sat outside as it was a lovely day and we had a couple of dogs. In the garden there was plenty of bowls of water for the dogs. In all we were there for about 4 hours and all thoroughly enjoyed our time there. (And I still got chips in the evening, win win)

Thoroughly enjoyable visit
9/2019
We were met by a very helpful National Trust volunteer who gave us some good advice on the best route round the estate which we followed with the aid of a useful guide map and audio tour supplied. First was the house, uncompleted by Sir Thomas Tresham due to his persecution for his Catholic beliefs. A very revealing history. Next were the grounds ad gardens, again not completed with meadows and orchards restored. Well worthy of a visit.

Good way to break a long journey
8/2019
This made an ideal stop-off for us on a long journey. The tea room was classic NT (with a pretty garden) and the interesting but small bield and immediate grounds can be explored with ease in around an hour. It seems that the NT are desperate to try and beef the property up make it more of a destination in its own right. Their task will be much easier when the adjacent old manor house opens next May. At the moment it’s very much the missing part of the story. Under 18s are free which is a bonus. (You can get a clear free view of the bield from the path from the car park).

Miles from anywhere!
9/2019
Lovely spot seemingly in the middle of nowhere! We had a lovely walk around the site and explored the half built house which felt different from the usual ruin. We had lunch in the tea room garden amongst a flock of sparrows with their young. We had scones with cheese and salad which was excellent and good value. There was a small but beautiful country garden full of flowers leading to the tea room. Another time I would like to take the audio guide and learn more about the history of the site and Sir Thomas Tresham.
