- David MOslo, Norway242 contributionsJust greatI will admit that some of my American friends from the east were making fun of me for staying in Omaha. Myself, I am so happy that I did not listen to them and that I stayed in town. The Old Market is as many here say a must see. Great shops, food, sweets, I even found a pinball museum. I felt like a big kid again. Also been a foreigner and out of town, I was greeted so often and when they heard where I live, the locals made me feel very welcome. Seriously, if you have the opportunity to visit Omaha, don't miss the Old Market. I was tempted to spend a fortune here. Luckily my credit card has a limit. EnjoyVisited March 2023Written 31 March 2023
- EdMBevTopeka, Kansas77 contributionsAmazing PatronageOld Market is a trip back in time. Lots of brick on the buildings and on the streets. Other cities have comparable settings, but, perhaps not as popular as this one. I understand that Omahans fill the streets on Saturdays for months on end.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 May 2023
- Carrie D.Cleveland, Ohio1,987 contributionsGood shopping! We enjoyed our time browsing around the Old Market District. We were fortunate that it was within walking distance of our hotel and it was nice to have it nearby. We spent one afternoon browsing the shops—there were so many fun local shops and local products, which we appreciated. We grabbed dinner at the Spaghetti Works, which is right in the Old Market District. It’s definitely worth planning a couple of hours, at least, to wander around this charming neighborhood if you find yourself in Omaha!Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 21 October 2023
- KathFWMadison, Wisconsin122 contributionsGreat area of the city, lots of places to eat and little shops.Great historic area with shops and lots of places for eating and drinking, cobblestone roads (don't wear heels, elderly beware!). Parking was very affordable. Staying at the Hyatt was a great location and it's a decent hotel, clean with no issues. I can imagine this place is very busy in the summer, In late October it was quite but all the shops seemed to still be open. I took off the one star only because of the homeless issues this area seems to be plagued with. It makes it less desireable of an area because of it and older reviews from as far back as 2015 suggest this has been a long going problem.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 October 2023
- ClevlanderSpringfield, Illinois4,984 contributionsBest place in the city for diningThis is an outstanding location to walk around and dine which is very lively at night. Several high-end restaurants are located here and it’s definitely the place to go for lunch or dinner. Given that most of the restaurants are high end, it is recommended that reservations were madeVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023

- ANR_78Marion, Illinois727 contributionsCheck It OutWe walked around to check out the area on a mid-morning Saturday before having our lunch and were pleasantly surprised. They had a weekend market that was in full swing with plenty of local vendors, snacks, performers, etc. Great spot for people watching. I would definitely recommend that you stop in if you have the time.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 January 2024

A very cute and kitchy downtown shopping area of old converted warehouses. Lots of restaurants too. Old cobblestone/brick streets add to the charm. It's something to do for a day or so when you're staying downtown.

There are restaurants, boutiques, bookstores, antiques, ice cream parlors, etc., all within a few blocks. I wish there were more shops but I still kept pretty occupied. The antique place catty-corner from the gas station-converted-to-ice cream parlor is great - there's a whole ice cream parlor in there, too, with authentic 50s booths and counter. There's also a great selection of candy from all eras. There's a theater inside, too, with chairs saved from old theaters as well as popcorn machines, pianos (for silent film accompaniment), etc., all available for sale. If you like to collect Pez, this is the biggest collection I've ever seen.

There is so much to do in the Old Market, it's a must-do if you are coming to Omaha. Between the specialty shops and the eating, you can't go wrong.

Go to M's Pub, you will not be sorry. The service is amazing, the food was even better (which is hard to do), and the atmosphere was equally as great. Ted and Wally's was awesome, too...very awesome. Be sure to be patient because there is a line, but it's worth it.

The Old Market has a lot to offer the entire family. Great restaurants, shops and several art galleries. Hollywood Candy is a fun family store that has all the candy you grew up with, movie memorabilia (life size Blues Bros!), and vintage collectables. Tannenbaum is a beautiful year round Christmas store, with ornaments for every interest. Ted & Wally's has different icecream every week; the French toast icecream is amazing! If you visit during the summer, check out the farmer's market Saturday morning, they have everything!
The only downside is weekend parking, if you don't want to pay ($6-$8), expect a bit of walking.

Is there a restaurant in the area that would take a reservation for a large group on Saturday night? (on Labor Day weekend) And where is a good place to park in the area?

We went during the day and early evening. We felt safe. There is obviously some homeless people but nothing that made us feel threatened.

Look up the webpage for Old Market (I wasn't able to paste it here). It does mention a place that rents wheelchairs. Good luck!

My husband and I are coming for a wedding in September and our 1 year anniversary is the next day, we want romantic sites and restaurants to do while we are in town. Can you forward a list with locations/prices/events that are happening the third week in September to me.
Thanks

I agree with everyone else's comments. You should check out the Old Market area downtown. There are several good restaurants down there including a few great chop houses with some of the best steaks in town! Then have a night cap (and your husband can have a cigar) at the Havana Garage cigar bar. They have live jazz on the weekend. Enjoy!

The horse drawn carriage only goes through the Old Market area. I'm not sure of their policies. I think you pay for a specific time.

Yes there is. I would recommend staying a little outside of the market area. It was extremely loud & *bar* seen in many spots. Although it was an awesome place to visit & maybe we went during college gradutation!

what hotels are close to the Old Market? and how far away from the old market to the zoo
Lifeunderpalms

There are lots of hotels in that area. The best is to go on google maps and you will see a listing of everything right in the market area. The market is really just a bunch of restaurants. Not like a conventional market with food stalls produce stalls and the like. Kinda wish it was. The zoo is about 15 to 20 min away. Great zoo and parking was free. We rented a car at the airport and did a zoo day and had lunch in the market area another. Even drove around some farms in Iowa. Very easy to drive there. I hope this helps you out and have a good time!
