Great Great Area.

All I can really say is HUELL HOWSER did a story on this reservoir in June 2005. It is worth viewing before you go, because it should motivate you to go. When Huell was there, it was hard to believe he was in Yosemite because there were so few people on this side of the park. Of course, most people take the "short" way into Yosemite. That being said, this portion of the park is about 1 1/2 from ANYWHERE, so bring plenty of drinks and food. You will see falls. You will see granite. You will see wildlife. And you get to see how the city of San Francisco gets fresh, clear water.

Mini-Yosemite Valley
7/2020
This dammed valley suffers greatly from the loss of the valley floor itself, but is still a beautiful location and a starting point for a few nice hikes (e.g., Wapama Falls). The history of the dam and its environmental opponents 90 years ago makes for interesting reading and a worthwhile opportunity to ponder honestly the trade-offs that are made between what nature offers and what we need to survive and thrive as a species.

Did you Know?

Hetch Hetchy’s (HH) turnoff is about a mile from the Highway 120 gate and about 10 miles in. From the road, you can see the reservoir and along the reservoir are three hiking trails. The shortest one is the Wapama, 2.7 miles one way. HH is a water system that supports the water for the Bay area. The O’Shaughnessy dam is the first you will view at the bridge. There is a tunnel to get to the hike. Parking is free and Park Rangers want you out by 4:30. We hiked the Wapama Falls and had lunch there. To preserve the sanitation, swimming, fishing and activities are not allowed except for the hike along side of the water. Hetch Hetchy, what a name!

Clean water that supplies San Francisco

The history of this Reservoir connects to history of Trains that serviced when this was built. Still can find the trains in James Town.

Worth the drive!

Took a bit of driving to get here, but glad we did. The reservoir is much larger than expected and the views all around are spectacular.

A worthwhile trip whilst visiting Yosemite
9/2019
You will find Hetch Hetchy in the North West Corner of Yosemite. We were staying in nearby Groveland but the drive still took us about an hour. You have to pay to visit this location. But if you have bought a weeks visitor pass for the park then there are no further charges. There is a wonderful history to this place which dates back over 6000 years and you will be given a very informative brochure at the Rangers Gatehouse on entry. It is a beautiful valley, the dam is the focal point but the surroundings are stunning. Whether you are a serious walker or just a stroller then there is something for everyone here. As British, we found it interesting that a Scottish born American Naturalist John Muir was vocal in the late 1800’s in wishing to preserve the natural of the area and stop the dam.

Spend quality time here

This is such a wonderful place. Its a distance away with windy drive in steep mountains some places no guard rail. Its not crowded at all. Its a distance away from the rest of the park. We drove up to the reservoir there is plenty of parking there. The dam that was built here was very controversial at that time and there is a history of the dam that is available on your walk. There are two waterfalls that you can visit. We walked the stretch of the dam, its so beautiful to see the waterfall and the reservoir as well as the force of the water trickling down. We walked into the tunnel onto the other side. There is a lot of drift wood. Its a very relaxed walk. We had a little picnic. There are restrooms right behind the entrance to the reservoir on your way out.

Great visit - caution on the roadway

It'll take you an hour from Groveland and nearly that from the park's west entrance (coming down Evergreen Road). There are great hikes beginning at O'Shaunessy Dam to Wapama Falls. You can feel the kinetic and potential energy at the spillway - so incredible. It's a tragedy that it's still a reservoir (the dam can and should be removed), It'd be wonderful to see the valley as Muir saw it (though it'd take many years to return to that glory.

Allow over an hour to drive there
7/2019 • Pariskunnat
It is a slow drive, so allow for the extra time. This is a very pretty spot if you have an extra half day on the highway 120 side of the park. There is a good hike here too, where you can walk to a waterfall, about 2 hour trip. Also fun to walk across the top of a dam.

My Daughter and I did this hike and loved it. Rainbows at the dam. Beautiful views from the hike. Quiet. I would highly recommend
