Hilltop Medieval Beauty in San Giorgio di Valpolicella
10/2018 • Pariskunnat
During our exploration of the Valpolicella area we were recommended to visit the Hilltop Medieval Beauty of the Pieve in San Giorgio di Valpolicella - & so glad that we took the time. It’s a classical medieval Church complex / Pieve wonderfully preserved and overlooking the quaint town. Historical & worthwhile visit! Enjoy!

Beautiful small church from the early Middle Ages
8/2018 • Perhe
Simple and graceful, in the tiny village of San Giorgio on a hilltop in the Valpolicella area (beautiful view of the hills and valleys, all the way to Lake Garda), the church and the cloister attached to it are worth a visit if in the area. In order to enjoy the inside visit, you need to put a 50 cent coin in the box that will turn the lights on for a few minutes.

Very eerie old 8th century church with many wall frescoes but very difficult to enjoy due to the bad lighting inside the church.

Amazing Historical Church

The frescos and ancient altar were can't miss historic sites. The church is built in the old Roman style and the views across the street are beautiful

Excellent frescoes and an adventure to get into
4/2017 • Pariskunnat
On the front door is a note in Italian saying to go in the door in the cloister. We tried many doors before finding the correct one. The church is dark and has many frescoes that you will want to see so be sure to bring .50 Euro coins. It lights the church for two minutes at a time. The church was built in the 12th century over an existing Lombard church. There is a fresco of the Last Supper (partially damaged), an odd one of Adam being expelled from Eden with empty sleeves and his arms and hands coming from somewhere else on his body, and others. The church is on the top of a hill and there is parking nearby.

A marvellous place with an air of history
5/2016
San Giorgio di Valpolicella is the most wonderful little village on top of a mountain with a view all the way to the Garda lake. The piazzs with the bar is a good place to enjoy a glass of the local Amarone from the wineries in the close vicinity. There are two small hotels; both very cosy and in particular the one with a restaurant a good place to stay. The food there is superb and the atmosphere like in a family house.

Well worth trailing for
8/2016 • Pariskunnat
This is a bit of a trek uphill on a narrow road from Sant Ambroglio, but well worth the effort. The village itself is a real gem with quaint old buildings and the beautiful historic church. You have to park outside the village, but it's only a short walk to the village. Some parts are steep, but we met two German women in their 70s/80s, so quite manageable. The inside of the church is a treat with old frescoes and interesting architecture and some considerable history going back to Roman times. The views over Valpolicella land from the village are stunning.

Wonder on a hill
8/2016 • Pariskunnat
The small town where this small church is located is a good destination for a nice tour on a winding road through the wonderful valpolicella wine country. The small church, romanic in architecture, is a small wonder. Afrescos, the altar and a nice cloister all well preserved. Do not miss! One will need a car to arrive ther!

Ancient Roman times church up at the top of a winding road. Fabulous views below
4/2016 • Kaverit
Hard to know when the church is open except for Sunday mass which is a great pity because the view from up on top of this tiny town is best in the late afternoon. Church and the outside stone areas on its approach and courtyard are very interesting. Even if church isn't open worth going to for the view.
