Interesting insights on toys and socialisation

The first stop on visiting the museum is a short film (in German) with a history of toy making in Sonneberg. The two floors above have many toys on display - and a couple of small play areas. As a visitor from the UK, I was interested to see some of the children's games from the second world war period and how they were designed to influence the thinking of young children. The building is equipped with a lift, so no access problems. An interesting outing. Do not miss the large display from the International exhibition - top floor.

Good for a rainy afternoon

If you are in the area, this museum has a fine collection of toys and a film regarding the historical local toy industry. All the information and films are in German without translation. That said, the toys are interesting in themselves and it's easy enough to see how old they are.

They do provide some hands-on play but mostly geared toward young children. I can only imagine they would have many more visitors if they provided more play opportunities for all. The installation for all ages was a simple marble track mounted on the wall. There was an actual line of adults waiting their turn to crank the ball up and watch it travel down. Hhhhhmmm.... In further additions to the museum I would recommend following the enthusiasm of the visitors and install more hands-on exhibits:)

It was the second time I visited and I have only good words to say about it. It's a beautiful little museum where you can find toys from all over the world, and from any time you want. It is like a time travel where you get to know how in different parts of the world toys developed and changed.
Visitors also have the oportunity to try some of them and there is also a souvenir shop for those who are interested. I recomend for everybody.

Good small museum

This is a substantial but small museum about the the history of toys. There is a focus on the toy industry in Sonneberg, but there are collections of toys from around the world, including Lego, tin soldiers, teddy bears, marionettes, model trains, model steam engines, and more. Photography is not allowed in the museum, but if you search Flickr you will see some photos that someone (not me!) took there.

It's not exactly worth a 5-hour train ride from Berlin in itself, but if you are in Sonneberg anyway, you could do worse than to spend a couple of hours here. Nearby you will find the St. Peter's cathedral and several neat toy shops.

My biggest complaint is that the explanatory text is German-only. I wish they had English translations.

Expect to spend: 2 hours
Admission: low (can't remember, but it wasn't much)
Good for: Kids, adults, everybody
Levels: two stories of permanent exhibition, plus a temporary exhibit on the third floor.

Excellent museum about toys~

This is a very nice museum in Sonneberg about the history of toys. Lots of examples of toys! The labels were in German, not English, and I don't speak/read German, but we had a family member with us who was bilingual. And besides, most of the toys speak for themselves!
