Fascinating find - well exhibited - but very little English
9/2016 • Kaverit
For history buffs - and after all, there is one in all of us - this is a fascinating museum telling the story of the region and a world that is somehow long gone, and somehow close. With all the money that has been poured into the exhibit, a few euros more could have been spent on translation and perhaps some interactive showing of the naval activities at the time of the wreck.

Superb collection of artifacts from a shipwrecked Roman vessel
10/2015 • Pariskunnat
Many ingots of lead and numerous amphorae as well as other pottery are on disply on the second floor and the first floor shows models of the ship and its hull. This is an extraordinary find which reveals much about life in Roman times.

Interesting stuff, but no boat
8/2015 • Pariskunnat
There are some very rare items on display in a well set out museum. The only issue is that the boat isn't there - not even a replica.
Nevertheless, worth a visit for some of the artefacts recovered.

Amazing exhibits

A small but fascinating museum. Some of the articles on show are amazingly well preserved. Men's footwear from 1st century BC.

One topic museum but well executed

This small museum made the most of the discovery of a Roman commercial vessel that sank near Comacchio 100 BC. Well worth a visit to complete your stroll through Comacchio.

A really interesting, and somewhat unexpected, museum
7/2015 • Pariskunnat
Wandering around the streets and canals of Comacchio, deservedly known as "little Venice", we came across this museum displaying the cargo of a Roman ship discovered in the1980s. Not only were we grateful to escape from the 38 degrees outside into an air conditioned space, but we were very intrigued by the amazing artefacts on display, including some very fine miniature shrines to Venus and Priapus and other deities, which still had working doors on them. Apparently the ship (of which there are models and a photo-montage on display), was discovered outside the town during the dredging of a canal, which in Roman times would have been part of the seashore as a further 4km of land has been reclaimed from the sea in the intervening centuries. The original boat, built sometime in the first century BC, is kept nearby in a special airtight environment to avoid any further deterioration.

The lady on the reception desk was incredibly helpful and filled in all sorts of historical detail for us (in Italian). There is quite lot of information in English though.

Wanted to see the ship
5/2015 • Pariskunnat
The ship is not accessible to visitors but it is a fine museum for the artifacts. The exhibits are well labeled.

wonderful museum

a huge fund of information in several languages, great displays and models. It will be complete when the actual boat is fully restored and on display.

Small but contents are worth the visit
8/2013 • Perhe
The museum, just few meters from the famous Comacchio bridge is small but the contents are amazing. Thanks to the mud, all the vessels contents have been incredibbly well preserved, so it is possible to see shoes and other leather artifacts which are really super rare to see anywhere else. Also, the six small lead-made altars are absolutely unique. It is magic.
