Beautiful

Caravaca is an absolutely beautiful town. We visited on our saga trip and everyone agreed how lovely it was. Nice castle and wonderful old buildings. Plenty of cafes and restaurants as well.

GREAT EXPERIENCE AND WONDERFUL VIEWS
11/2019 • Kaverit
Caravaca is a very pleasant and cosmopolitan town to visit in the north west of Murcia- wander through the narrow streets with plenty to discover - the fiesta in May is just spectacular - no visit is complete without walking up the steep hill to the Castle at the top with spectacular views over the town and the surrounding countryside

Historic beautiful village

Many historic buildings and the church is beautiful inside. Many buildings have plaques in Spanish and English explaining their history. Easy parking and many restaurants.

Climbs and castle
9/2019 • Kaverit
Having been told about the legend of the True Cross we decided to go. The climb to the castle is steep so you need to be fairly fit and mobile to reach it. The views are stunning. The cross is in a glass case in a small room and pilgrims come to worship. Obviously you can visit whatever faith you are or even if you have no faith.

A beautiful place to visit
8/2019 • Pariskunnat
We decided to spend a night here in Caravaca as we had heard all about the beauty of the town and its stories of the Vera Cruz and the tales of the wine horses. We decided to stay in the hosteria Nuestra Señora del Carmen which is a working monastery founded by Juan de la Cruz and is perfectly located and well worth a visit. After lunch we began our ascent up to the castle and sanctuary of the True Cross. Although you can drive to the castle, the streets are quite narrow and winding so I would reccomend the stroll up. There is a tourist train which travels from the Plaza de Arcos to the basilica but the walk is manageable and there are places to stop on the way. We arrived just before the church was closing so just had time to pop into the chapel and see the cross and say a quick prayer. The sanctuary is quite beautiful and the views of the town are worth the climb. We walked down from the castle through the winding streets with their mixture of convents and pretty churches. Later we grabbed an excellent dinner in Plaza Massima and after an evening stroll we retired to our hotel. I would totally recommend a trip to this beautiful town.

Not to be missed

The Basilica shrine of La Vera Cruz is simply stunning from ground level and can be seen high above the town approaching from any direction. Driving and parking nearto the Basilica can be problematic and daunting. The roads are extremely narrow and is not really for the faint hearted. However having braved the journey I found plenty of parking literally under five minutes walk away from La Plaza Arco below the Church on a road called La Calle Colegio. This parking can be reached via a wide main rd the, RM 715. Parking was free.
There is a tourist train which runs from Plaza Arco to the Basilica. (Not a train but a minibus type vehicle). My wife and I walked up it was fairly steep but doable in ten minutes. The views of the town from the Basilica were brilliant and a photographers dream. The church itself very ornate and atmospheric. There were warnings outside the entrance on dressing accordingly. The little chapel which houses the splinter of the cross on which Christ was crucified is next to the alter. It is normally locked and when we visited opened at 10.30, 11.30 and so on. I believe the doors to the Basilica close in the afternoon for Siesta.Visiting the church is free. Souvenir shop on site and reasonably priced and there are quite a few similar places in and around Plaza Arco.

Great views of Caravaca
6/2019 • Pariskunnat
Visited in the morning due to the heat and avoid any crowds. Paid €3 each to visit the museum which also allows you access to the 11thc cisterns and a walk underground through the old moat. We had a personal tour by a lovely lady that taught french in town and she explained how the moat was excavated in the 1950s. The museum is small but also lets you access underground and see the bases of the original moorish towers which was very interesting. All in all worth the money but entrance to the cloisters and the church is free so you can weigh it up.

Great views

Its worth parking away from the castle as the streets are impossible for a car if your not a local so park low down. We walked up through the town until finally reaching the castle and church. Outside the church there is a seating area with beautiful views.

Great town
11/2018 • Pariskunnat
Loved it. Arrived here as a group cycle holiday. Our guide, Alex, was amazing. We walked to to amazing castle & learned all about the wine horses. I hate museums, but this one was well worth €2. Had no idea Spain celebrated Caballos del Vino. Defo worth visiting in May to see festival & celebrations.

Only got 4 stars as went in Nov & nowhere opened for dinner until 8.30pm. Out of season so guess we were lucky anywhere open.

Unlike most of the Spanish towns I have visited before. Limited bars & very hard to find any places to eat or drink until at least 8.30pm. No street bars, every sleepy place
