Spectacular and peacful - if you are expecting a waterfall you will be disappointed though
5/2019 • Perhe
This is one of our favourite places and living just an hour away we visit it several times a year.
The gravel road leading to the car park is degrading and is not suitable for sports cars but is still passable with care with a family car (May 2019). From the car park it is a short walk along the road to the 'waterfall' or more usually water dribble. It is after this point that that the gorge really beings and it is spectacular.
The footpath hugs the river and the gorge gets narrower and narrower (great work by the national park to get this open again after the earthquakes), before finally opening out into a slightly wider valley. You can follow this for miles, either to the source of the river and beyond or take the signposted deviation to the hermitage of San Leonardo (the church is closed at this time due to earthquake damage but still worth a visit).
Even in summer there are few people (unless you get a school group doing a visit), and the peace, shade, sounds and light of the beechwood canopy and river refresh the soul.

Impressive scenery
7/2018 • Perhe
We took the hike with children age 13-11-8. The hike is suitable for smaller children, I would say age 6+. The trail goes up and down a bit but nothing too bad.

It is imperative to wear good footwear, sneakers are barely sufficient on the loose rocks. The paths along the river Tenna are well-kept but some of the climbs/descents are more challenging.

We walked about an hour in and saw the most impressive part (the gorge) and haven’t continued into the woods.

The scenery is very impressive, even on the way down from the parking to the start of the gorge.

Parking is indeed limited, many cars parked along the road to the actual parking (which will not hold more than 20 cars anyway).

The way there will also present you with nice views as it winds itself along the mountains.

There is no sales stands or anything so bring your own refreshments, even though the gorge will not allow much sunshine in.

Picturesque and peaceful

We did this hike out of season and in the rain so didn't seen another soul. It was perfect! The scenery is stunning with steep striking gorge walls and an engorged fast flowing river. If you hike to the Sorgente del Tenna (the source of the river Tenna) it is reasonably hilly so gets the heart pumping. It is worth getting to this point as the mountain sides are covered in carpets of wildflowers and beautiful red and green foliage.

Note the start of the trail is down a fairly rough dirt track with a small amount of parking at the end.

A great walk for the whole family

You get to the car park at the entrance via a well-posted white road from Montefortino. The road is not great, so if you are precious about your pride and joy, you may be concerned. Some say that Italian men love their cars more than their wives, but the road does not seem to put them off.
Parking is limited, so try to go in a less popular period.
The walk starts in the Gola, which I think (based on nothing much) is a collapsed prehistoric cave system. You can see clearly the effects of water erosion over the eons and the layers of sedimented limestone. It is truly spectacular and you can almost touch both walls simultaneously. The walk here is accompanied by the sound of rushing water in the river Tenna. You emerge into beech forest and there is an option to divert to a modern church built by a priest/hermit which is a bit of a pilgrimage spot. IMHO it is not worth the climb. Because the upper reaches of the main walk are on limestone, the ground is dry and there are many plants which only thrive on this soil, like thistles over 2m tall! Eventually, the walk peters out at the source of the Tenna, which is a squat concrete structure..
The walk is suitable for almost all ages and abilities, including fairly small children. However, wear suitable footwear. There is delicious drinking water about 2 hours into the walk, at a popular picnic spot. You may want to carry your own if you don't want to walk that far.

One of the best hikes ever
7/2015 • Pariskunnat
We did not plan to walk this route. We did bring good walking boots, a bottle of water and some fruit. This was adequate for the summer. We took the walk along the river which was simple spectacular. The river winds its way through the rocks, with amazing views. It is one of the nicest hikes we ever did and it encouraged us to make plans to come to the area to explore more
