Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Not bad for a small collection in the middle of the city for killing time. The architecture of the museum itself is an art piece. The Japanese garden is also a plus. All in all it was a pleasant visit.

With so many exhibitions to choose from some of which required a pre-paid ticket and others were free, it was helpful for us to choose which exhibitions to see. It’s a large building that is architecturally interesting with coffee shops and restaurants to take a break. There are 3 floors of exhibits. There is limited English brochures depending upon the exhibit.

Fantastic experience at this premier art museum and the viewing deck on top of the building. The "Our Ecology" exhibit was fascinating and very accessible. Judos to the curators, who brought together stunning work from artists all over the world to reimagine and explore the world's environmental woes. Yet the exhibit managed to be awe-inspiring instead of depressing. The presentation was simple but beautiful. The entry price includes access to the viewing deck, which is a bargain. Wonderful gift shop as well.

Amazing. Design 21 21 had a very interesting Exhibition on Material and the way its used by the animal world and humans , One was made by a crow which made its nest out of Coat hangers, which may be due to greater bendability of the hangers over twigs. A cross section of Japanese Green Woodpeckers Nest. The building itself is also amazing by Japanese's Architecture Tadao Ando.

While many come here to visit the Art Museum, we come to stroll in the Japanese garden. You can pay a garden-only entrance fee which is quite minimal, and even smaller for seniors.

Along with the Japanese strolling garden, the grounds include a European garden, several large statues and sculpture installations on a broad open lawn area often populated by kiddie playgroups (and children happily climbing on the abstract sculptures), family gatherings, young couples, seniors, and, of course, the Art Museum itself.

The small Japanese garden, tucked into the far reaches of the grounds, is well worth your time. We found that late morning visits provided better light than later in the afternoon. We have been several times at different times of day. The autumn foliage never disappoints. This is a popular place and it often has many tourists. If you want to take photos without people - as we do - you will find yourself waiting a long time before you can get your desired shot.

The circuit around the koi pond offered many different views, some including borrowed scenery. At the top of a small hill is a lovely tea house. Two women (volunteers?) invited us to take our shoes off to photograph the space. They also gave us a pamphlet in English about the tea house. They seemed most pleased that we showed such interest in the building. Be aware that there are uneven steps up to and down from the tea house.

After making a second circuit around the pond and photoing the garden from every angle we finally decided it was time to depart.

    Visitors tips:

This is a perfect place to visit before or after a walk through the very close Nature Institute. Happo-en garden can be visited on the same (very full) day as well.
Ask about a senior, over 65, discount for entrance - be prepared to show you passport to prove your age.
Even if you don’t visit the Art Museum, you can visit BLANC, one of two shops for the Museum, located just outside the entrance to the grounds. Lots of interesting items for sale here.

Very rewarding experience to be able to show your teens how perspective and art can work together. Very friendly staff and the mall is just amazing for families. The views from the mall are very pretty.

Impressive temporary exhibition ending 3/31.1300 yen. The museum was crowded on a Monday afternoon. Kyosai was an Edo/Meiji period painter regarded by many Japanese to be as or close to as important as Hokusai. His training was classic and he started at the young age of 10. Some of this exhibition's works were on loan from the British Museum. If crowded, you will need about 2 hours. Lines in Japan's museums can be slow and tight but keep moving.

It was disturbing and amazing to watch a brilliant mind deteriorating at such an young age.
It was like watching a visual diary of self destruction.
Mind blowing that someone who can't draw at all - draws so well.
Massive and great show. I visited last Sunday. The only negative is - you have to stand in line to get in for over an hour, so you are very tired even before you enter. But it was worth waiting. Highly recommended if you happen to be in Tokyo.

Cute little memorial museum conveniently located in the heart of Tokyo. It is interesting to see some of the artist’s work which also used to be his home and studio while he was alive. The exhibit changes every few months and only cost 620 yen for adults. It was nice to take a break from shopping and enjoy some art. Recommend to visit if you’re in the area or a fan of his.

This is probably not worth a special trip, but if you are visiting Hama-Rikyu gardens this is very close and worth an hour or more of your time, since it is free and rather fun (if you can find it - they certainly don't go out of their way to advertise the location, although once you find the correct entrance it is obvious).

The history of advertising in Japan is an interesting story. There is quite a bit of English-language labelling, but even for the displays that don't have that, the pictures generally tell the story.

Small private museum that is often overlooked. Has a rather eclectic collection of modern sculpture (Henry Moore etc), Egyptian mummies and Chinese and India stone carvings and sculpture. The second floor is devoted to special exhibits, and there was an interesting exhibition on Persian pottery when I was there. I was virtually the only visitor there on a rainy weekday, which makes for a rather leisurely and enjoyable experience. Photography is not allowed for some of the exhibits. Note all captions in Japanese only, though these days it is easy to get a translation using one's mobile phone. Overall I enjoyed my brief visit.

Here you can find thousands of collections of art objects collected by Kihachiro Okura as the founder of this museum, following other collections. This museum is quite old, and can be used as points of interest for those of you who are interested in historical relics.

For a modern life, this museum depicts very useful things to educate common people to choose from various options. Though the term Museum is a kind of misleading but in reality, this facility wonderfully and gracefully presents the concept of future living standards that supports environmental protection and energy conservations in every walk of life. In my opinion, this is a MUST-SEE facility!

This is a branch museum of the Sen-oku Hakuko-kan museum in Shishigatani, Kyoto. Like the main museum, it exhibits numerous art objects collected by the Sumitomo family, with a focus on ancient Chinese bronzes.
Compared to the main museum, the size and number of exhibition rooms are smaller. Therefore, it takes only about one hour to tour the permanent exhibits. And, compared to the main museum, the lighting in each exhibition room seems a little darker (presumably because the lighting has been adjusted to protect the works). Furthermore, the number of exhibits placed in the center of each exhibition room is also small. The space between the exhibits arranged in the wall exhibition space is also wide, which may be intended to allow visitors to appreciate each exhibit from various angles.
Because of this, the total number of exhibits does not seem to be that large. On the other hand, since the exhibits are not spread out into many different genres, but rather focused on one (or at most two), visitors can enjoy viewing the differences between exhibits in a particular genre, historical background, and history. Explanatory notes about each exhibit and exhibit category are posted in an easy-to-understand manner, but most of them are written in Japanese. If the exhibits were available in multiple languages (or at least with only English), they would be more widely known throughout the world.
With the exception of a few exhibits, photography is not prohibited as long as it's for private use and does not involve the use of flash (however, it's necessary to check in advance as photography may be prohibited if the special exhibitions). The nearest station is Roppongi 1-chome Station, but the building is not directly connected to the station and visitors must go outside. There is also an elevator for wheelchair and stroller users, but it's a little difficult to find the way to get there. It's recommended to check the website in advance.

The gallery is an unexpected gem in the middle of corporate neighborhood (next to US embassy, Okura Hotel and Toranomon buildings), the building is great and "The Power of Colors" exhibit was really interesting. Some very beautiful pieces on display. Next time, I will also try the restaurant, looks nice and overlooks little garden.
