Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Katie NNottinghamshire, UK3 contributionsReally beautiful place to visit and worth it for the lovely boat trip alone! The views are spectacular. The only problem is that the information is very limited and so you don't learn as much as would be good.Written 2 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michelle TNew York City, NY666 contributionsUnlike some other historical spots, there actually isn’t much of Knossos left. So while it is called a palace, it’s really an archaeological site with ruins. There is a lot of imagination involved with a visit to Knossos, as a lot of it is either gone or moved to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. If you’re looking for something as grand as the Acropolis or even as well maintained as Pompeii, this isn’t it. Go in with this mindset and you won’t be disappointed. I do highly recommend a tour guide, as I feel like we would’ve had a hard time envisioning what Knossos used to look like without her help.Written 18 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - A JStevenage, UK109 contributionsInteresting place to visit. Lots of bits to see. Some of the ground is uneven and rough so need to watch your footing. Only 4 euros entry which is probably worth it. Great views from the top. You can get a site map at the ticket office. Take water and a hat on hot days as not much shade. Definitely worth a visit.Written 19 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tata C7 contributionsIncredible feat of engineering that is well worth a visit to understand the changes through history of the Venetian and Ottoman as well as Greek culturesWritten 13 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michelle TNew York City, NY666 contributionsWe visited the Zeus Cave during a tour and it was really amazing. It costs 6 EUR per person to enter the cave and you can pay 10 EUR for a donkey to take you up the top. Otherwise it’s a 15-20 minute steep uphill walk to the top of the cave. The walk up is mostly paved, except for the last 2-3 minutes, where it’s mostly rocky. You then climb about 100 steps down to the cave with the most amazing stalagmites and stalactites. There is a small shop at the top of the hill where you can buy beverages, which is a huge help cause during the summer months it’s a pretty steep hike up. We’re not particularly in shape, and we made it just fine. However, I would highly recommend wearing shoes with good grip, as some of the path can get slippery.Written 18 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ANGELO VMilan, Italy2,939 contributionsNikos Kazantzakis, the author of the book "Zorba the Greek", is buried at the highest point of the Venetian Walls of Heraklion, the Martinengo Bastion.
His tomb is very simple, in stone with a cross in front of it and an epitaph that reads "Δεν ελπίζω τίποτα. Δε φοβούμαι τίποτα. Είμαι λέφτερος." (I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.)
Nearby on the same bastion is the tomb of his wife Eleni.
From the Martinengo Bastion there is a very good view over the mountains and see of Crete.Written 26 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Turns out it was a Venetian built building and is used by the authorities nowadays. All I know it was a cool looking bit of architecture and the wife could log onto the web! Well worth a quick look and the gallery is good.Written 23 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Scotland71Cork, Ireland248 contributionsHeard about it from an archeologica buff and is interesting. However, it’s quite basic and not well set up for tourists. Gets hot. - selseyladywest sussex326 contributionsWe had some time to kill before checking in at Chania airport so we decided to detour to view the Venizelos graves. We visited early Saturday afternoon and found the carpark very full. There was a café adjoining the carpark with a fantastic view towards Chania. It was full of Greek families enjoying leisurely lunches. Although we only wanted drinks, we were made very welcome and enjoyed the general friendliness and view. We then visited the lovely park which housed the graves and memorial, very peaceful with stunning views and we finished off our holiday enjoying the peace and quiet and surroundings before our departure. Recommended.Written 11 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- RandyRossRidgetown, Canada11,776 contributionsThis Venetian fortress is part of the history of Chania. There are also great views of the harbor. Our time allowed only a brief photo stop but I would have liked more time to explore.Written 18 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Brian KBournemouth, UK71 contributionsWhat a delightful place to visit! (Again, a stop on the 'Hop on Hop off' bus from Rethymnon). We were greated by one of the Nuns, who was an absolute delight! She gave us an informative tour of the Nunery, explaining it's history, and how it was rebuilt. There is a small Chapel which is part of the tour. There is also a Craft shop which sells items made by the Nuns. There are also some stunning views!Written 17 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- bdon257Morpeth, UK4,987 contributionsThis is in the heart of the historic pedestrian area of the town, the lion fountain is just in front and the Town Hall a few meters away. The art exhibition changes so always something different to see. It is housed in a former basilica.Written 13 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Debbie TCardiff, UK19 contributionsThe monastery is an interesting place to visit and visitors are always made to feel welcome. On the premises are the original cells where monks lived and a fabulous traditional olive oil press so you can see how olive oil was produced in times gone by. The walk from nearby Vamos is an easy downhill trek (though there is parking for cars at the entrance), past olive groves and you can look out over the valley below at distant villages with a mountain backdrop.Written 11 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ANGELO VMilan, Italy2,939 contributionsThis church was built in the early 17th century, on the site of an earlier Byzantine church that was destroyed by an earthquake.
This church houses a collection of icons, including major works of the Cretan school.
Unfortunately, there is no descriptions / explanations for these treasures.
This is a real gem off the beaten path.Written 26 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
