Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

These fascinating quarries are where Michelangelo used to source his marble for his masterpieces in Florence and Rome. The caves offer two types of tours up and down the quarries in 4WD cars. Our tour (the longer one) takes you into the mountain to visit an underground mine. The roads getting up there for almost as good as the quarries themselves and the views were just stupendous.

It was à fascinating experience, and the guide was both friendly and informative.

A short nice cave in a not crowded area, just a few italian tourists, the guide was very nice, translated in english and helped us with other questions. You can get a hitchhiking map there as well.

Very good tour from the custodian. Some attractive and interesting furnishings, decoration, history, nice sized castle. Included a quick tour of the guest area. We didn't meet the phantom, as far as we were aware, but the place has a certain atmosphere. Stunning views over the neighbouring planes.

Fantastic experience to taste directly on site, in the very location where the world renown Lardo is produced.
We had a selection of “affettati”
amongst which a superb lardo literally melting on warm Sgabei (the Tuscan panzerotti as they are called there).
    Coppa, guanciale, prosciutto.
Picturesque terrace overlooking the caves/mountains of the quarries.
Were lucky to find a close by parking spot and enjoyed our break after the tour of the Cave di Marmo.
Great stuff. We bought lots of lardo for us and for gifts

Charming town and a river runs through it! Wonderful place for a stop, lunch, and a stroll. Right off the Autostrada. The locals are very friendly, even the Police! Put this one on the list,

I was struck by the simplicity of the cathedral’s interior which provides space for worship and a small number of high-quality art treasures.

A nearly completely intact little medieval town inside the town walls. During the summer they close the place to cars, in the winter there are so few cars that it isn't a bother (the road runs straight through from gate to gate). It is still real enough to not get smothered by the feel of over-tourism, and to walk around there on a foggy winter night will transport you back 400 years. There is at least one really good restaurant there as well (Convivium).

In the middle of nowhere (well, the village of Gragnola in the Fivizzano district of Italy) perched high atop an incredible hill surrounded by dense natural forest sits an incredible fortress type restored castle. What a find! An absolute gem. Treat it like your home, says Andrea Facchinato, the resident custodial manager. Your home? As if owning a castle feels normal...

It’s a delight... 9 bedrooms with en suite facilities complete this property along with battlements, rooftop hideaways, it’s own church, halls and lounges. The food? Local produce, magnificently served. It’s the kind of place a Hollywood celebrity would rent out in its entirety and have a few friends over. Without the Hollywood pricing! The rooms, peak season, are no more expensive than an average London hotel. The food isn’t cheap, but is sensational and therefore considering it’s quality, the setting and the service... it’s absolutely priced fairly and appropriately. We loved it. There’s a 14th century buried Knight, inscriptions on the walls and a castle tour which is absorbing...

It felt like, dare I say it...we owned a castle...

We stayed one night, on a scheduled travel trip around the region, and should have stayed a week. It’s that good. Best tip? Pack very light. You don’t want to drag your heavy case to the top of your private turret. Yes: you read that right.

A nice setting in an ancient city. A piazza in white marble with views of the white marble quarries just above.

Marina di Massa is an amazing beach zone at summer as they are open the bagno that provides you with everything you need up to towels and access to showers (need to pay of course) and an amazing walking path full of small restaurants with local food and just places where you can have your cold spritz in the afternoon while enjoying the sunset!
However it’s crowded here even in winter with people strolling on the beach, kids skating, etc.

Would you visit a pharmacy in the UK for fun? Doubt it.
But this place, with it's room of potions and powders, jars and drawers, it's panelled glory and cool floors sells a special tonic, said to have restorative qualities, made by magic monks a million years ago. I exaggerate, but the bottles are cool and you can only get it here folks. Italians take their "digestivos" very seriously indeed. China might just be the "tonic" you've been looking for.

We visited this church during our journey on the Via Francigena, leg from Pontremoli to Villafranca. Arriving on foot increases the charm of its apparition.
For those living in central Tuscany, Lunigiana is a disturbing experience. We immediately feel that we are in am inusual region, shaped by its condition as a border region, hybrid as there are few in Italy, with strong characteristics of transit land. All lands are somehow "also" of transit, but in Lunigiana transit appears to be a destiny, shaped by a history of transits that relies on a geography favorable to them.
The Pieve di Sorano well symbolizes this Lunigiana's condition. Located at the foot of the town of Filattiera, next to an important road, both in the past (the Lombard "Monte Bardone road") and in current times (the #62 national road), it isn't in the center of a town, but outside it, as if it were a gas station. It is as if it said: I am not at the service of the place, but of those who pass by here.
Of course it isn't so, in fact. This is not a simple parish church, but a "pieve" (from the Latin "plebs", people). That is, it's a church with the right to baptize. A pieve is a "central place", it has under it a series of other churches scattered throughout the surrounding area.
Its proto-Romanesque architecture, with simple walls and harmonious apses, recalls that of many churches of its time, especially in Lombardy.
It's simple and awe-inspiring. Not to be missed.
