Watatsumi Shrine is one of the power spots on Tsushima Island, and definitely worth a visit. Having a total of five torii gates in a straight line leading up to the water to the shrine, makes for a great spiritual experience (and a great photo). The location, near the coastline, added to the charm, offering picturesque views that complemented the spiritual ambience. The connection to maritime traditions and the sea god deity, added a unique dimension to the visit.

We went on a rainy and overcast day and were basically the only people at the shrine, but I have heard it can get crowded over the weekends and when the weather is good. One thing to note: if you can, time it that you are there during high tide, otherwise you will only experience one of the torii’s in the water.

If you walk past the shrine, on the right side, you will come to two large rocks that are also considered power stones. No photographs are allowed here.

This is a really interesting and significant temple. It is the family temple of the Sō clan, but also houses the spirit boxes of the Tokugawa clan (yes, the Tokugawa’s that ruled Japan as shogunates from 1603 to 1867). As you enter the temple, move to the right and back of the building. There you will see a closed-off room (with glass doors), with several black and gold spirit boxes placed around the room. Why are the spirit boxes here and not on mainland Japan? No idea, but still very cool!

On the right side of the building, to the front, you will also see an elaborate bronze statue consisting of a candle holder, an incense box, and a large vase. Once one of six, these gifts were brought to Japan by the Koreans on their envoy to Edo. The other 5 were melted down to produce weapons during the war, and this is the only original still surviving.

Next to the Red Gate of Banshoin Temple, you will note a pathway that leads over a stone bridge. Follow that and up the 132 steps to the burial site of the Sou (or Sō) clan of Tsushima. Halfway up the steps, you will pass by a massive cedar tree, and it’s said that if you touch the tree, your life will be extended by 10 days. You have nothing to lose by touching it, so you do you. I implore you to also read a bit about the life and times of Sō Yoshitoshi. Forced to invade Korea by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and then make peace with them by Tokugawa Ieyasu, his life was an interesting one. Better yet, go to the Korean Envoy History Museum (Google Mapes: 対馬朝鮮通信使歴史館 ) that is 5 minutes away on foot, for an in-depth history of Korean influence on Tsushima and Japan and how Sō Yoshitoshi factored into that (including a replica of his letter he forged to the King of Korea).

The trail leading to the Kaneda Fortress ruins through the picturesque mountains offers a leisurely hike, taking approximately 5 hours to complete. The views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape are beautiful. You will also see some remnants of the military battery on the mountaintop from the Russo-Japanese War.

For an even more rewarding experience, bring along a packed lunch or bento to enjoy with a panoramic view near the summit. Some tables and seating are scattered around for your comfort. Keep in mind that the trailhead is the sole location for bathroom facilities, so plan accordingly.

Exploring the Kaneda Castle ruins on Tsushima Island was a captivating journey through history and nature. The trek, though not overly difficult, was pleasantly long, allowing me to immerse myself in the ancient past.
The remnants of the Korean-style fortress, built in 667, transported me back over a thousand years when Tsushima served as a frontline defense against potential invasions. The site's historical significance was palpable, with echoes of battles fought during the Russo-Japanese War still lingering in the air.
The trek offered a glimpse into the strategic importance of Kaneda Castle, perched on the mountaintop of "Joyama." As I wandered through the ruins, I marveled at how this location, exposed at the front line of national defense, had witnessed centuries of tension and preparation for conflict.
Aside from the historical intrigue, the trek also showcased the stunning natural beauty of the Joyama area. The landscape, with its ancient ruins and lush surroundings, made the journey not only educational but also visually breathtaking.
In conclusion, the Kaneda Castle ruins provide a unique blend of history and nature. The trek, though lengthy, is rewarding, offering a chance to connect with the island's rich past while enjoying the serenity of its beautiful landscapes. Highly recommended for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Hiking in Shiratake was, without a doubt, a highlight in my Tsushima visit. Granted some parts of the trek were pleasantly challenging and can get a bit steep. But the effort really paid off when reaching the summit where the breathtaking panoramic views of Aso Bay appeared. I think you might catch a glimpse of Korea on a good day. About a hundred yards down from the summit, there’s a perfect spot for a bento break - nothing beats this al fresco among the natural beauty, especially if you are escaping from urban hustle and bustle or dreary al desko office dining on a daily basis.

The beach is located right up side from Hitakatsu port. It took within 10 minute by taxi and the cost is 850 JPY.
Some people say, they can reach form Hitakatsu to Miuda by bicycle,,but it's really hard and tough on my estimation.

During the summer season(July, Aug.), you can use some facilities(shower room, changing room, tap water, etc) for free of charge. Except that period, there are not operating them.

I spent 2 hours with my kids and I really enjoyed the clean vivid sea water. Comparing to Korean beach, I could see the some fish and sea urchins in the beach.

Near the beach, I can also enjoy Nagisanoyu Osen. The price is 600JPY/adult and it is little bit small but good quality of water and facilities.
When I visited there two times, I used shuttle bus service to Hitakatsu port. The shuttle bus service is available only week day and one time(14:40).

Even the access to the beach is not easy, the beach is really worth to visit.

The Center is a bit hard to get to unless you have your own car, and there isn't a whole lot of information in English, but there is plenty for those who can read Japanese. The star attraction is the endangered Tsushima Leopard Cat that can usually be seen sleeping in a small outdoor enclosure, but there is also a host of information about Tsushima's ecology in general.

I think you can rarely see Pusan,Korea from here despite of the name so I do not recomend the visit. There is no sight seeing bus tour in Tsushima so you need to drive by yourself or take a taxi to come here. I first went to Pusan and then visited HItakatsu to see how korean tourists affect this place(locals say close to 97% of visitors are koreans). My personal choice would be visiting Izuhara only and not come to Hitakatsu.

I wish all information centres were this good.
The expected room full of brochures and helpful local staff is only one small aspect of this info centre. There is also a restaurant attached that offers a wide selection of Japanese classics at a low cost, an education centre packed with environmental and historical information about Tsushima, clean toilets and a locker and waiting room, but best of all is the souvenir shop featuring mostly Japanese made - and usually Tsushima made or made with Tsushima produce - products from tote bags to sake and dried fish to jewellery, this shop has little in the way if mass produced products and is the best place on the island to grab a genuine souvenir. They even have licensed Ghost of Tsushima merch available.
They also offer bicycle hire but only for within the Izuhara area.
