What travellers are saying
- tim rWorcester137 contributionsIt's popular, and busy, so get there early, but it is really beautiful. We had a rare sunny day, but it would be great in the rain as well. Paths are a bit challenging ( more so in the rain I imagine) but well sign-posted. You can go pretty much as far as you like - you get a map when you buy your ticket. I walked to Drum Rock - what a view! The cedars are fascinating, but actually it's the setting and the ancient path which stand outWritten 16 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Charles10 contributionsI did the long course which took me through msny beautiful natural forest areas. Trails are difficult and hazardous in some places, although thr short course can be pleasant and an abbreviated version of the long course.Written 1 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - swisstravellerBerne666 contributionsThis is a very beautiful waterfall. We got there by bus, which took about 1.5 hours from the airport and left us with 40 minutes at the waterfall (before catching the returning bus). Its very peaceful and nicely located, just on the coast. There are not many visitors, which definitely add to the charm of this place.Written 29 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ka7tnuVancouver, Canada165 contributionsWe went there spring time. Usually, there is a rainy season but at the time it was really nice weather. Some people say that rain with this forest is real Yakushima forest scenery but Sunny day also very beautiful!
Written 17 January 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The macaques do not move off as you approach so you have to drive around them. Stunning views all around. One of the best experiences I’ve had.Written 1 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Pengapa189 contributionsI was there during the season turtles lay eggs. Local people are trying hard to maintain the population of turtles and run turtle viewing sessions so that tourists won't disturb turtles laying eggs, which means that you cannot just go and look at them by yourselves (in theory you can as locals cannot stop you from doing it but you feel you really shouldn't). It costs 1,500 yen per person to attend a viewing session, but when you realise how hard the locals and volunteers work, you feel the money is well spent. The night we went, we saw two turtles (apparently much less than usual) laying eggs and it was a beautiful experience. Next morning, I returned to the beach and sure enough there were turtles' footprints.Written 3 July 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DSBWokingham, UK160 contributionsBefore you get to Yakushima you'll soon find that unless you hire a car, getting around can be troublesome.
But any who. I appreciate bus times may change, but to see some of the islands highlights or albeit waterfalls. Do the simple trick of getting on the first bus to Oko-no-taki falls. I went from Miyanoura Port at 0840. You'll get to the falls at 1018. Jump of the bus and follow the signs to the waterfall, which is probably a 4min walk. Then head back up to the bus stop and get the returning bus at 1100, heading back toward Miyanoura.
For the Senpirono Falls get off at bus stop 87. Across the round they'll be a visitors centre where they sell a good cup of coffee. Now directly opposite the centre, across the road, is a small footpath leading to a view point of the Torohki-no-teki falls. The walk to the view point is probably no more than 2 mins.
To get to the Senpirono Falls, from the perspective of the visitors centre. Turn right and walk across the bridge. You should then see a sign post for the falls, which sends you up a road. Follow that road up and soon enough you'll get to the falls. Now they say it takes an hour to walk the 3km. But if you have a good pace, you can probably do it 40mins even less. The last 1.5km is a little steep, but if you're of reasonable fitness, it shouldn't be an issue. Then see the falls, walk back to the main road and jump on the returning bus.Written 3 May 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It’s right beside the bus stop, and the bus waits about 20 minutes before taking you back down to Yakusugi. It’s one of the oldest trees in the forest national park, at over 3000 years of age. I imagine that’s quite rare.Written 11 January 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Yoshie SEnfield, UK78 contributionsWe were very lucky with the weather. It was a warm cloudy-sunny day in November with some fog defending as we approached Jomon-sugi. It added an effect to make it look even more majestic. For the middle age couple who were far from fit, 10 hours' walk was really tough but it was worth it. The forest and the mountain were beautiful. We wished we had started half an hour earlier, so that we could stayed around Jomon-sugi a little longer. We had the disposable toilet bags with us just in case but did not use them as 2 toilets were sufficient for us. We went without a guide this time and will be nice to have a guided tour next time. The paths and the forest are beautiful.
We overlooked the fact 6:00am bus service to the entrance stopped at the end of Oct. so we missed the last morning bus when tried first time (we went to Harutahama beach to see the sunrise and the tide coming up with the bento breakfast on the rock for a very good consolation). At the 2nd time, we ordered the bento boxes to pick up on the way from Asahi-do and got on the 5:40 (5:20 was full). We were back on the 16:30 bus. We recommend to take the front seat on the return bus if pos. it is a quite thrilling descending ride to view the valleys from the edge of the narrow road (wow! to the bus drivers) and you get to see Yaku-monkeys and deers ahead.Written 18 November 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tour guides tell the angle to capture the heart to the sky. It's fun, too.
The area near this stump is a place to rest or to eat. I saw some people using burners to cook.Written 21 February 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It took us only a little over 6 hours round trip so an overnight stay in the hut is not necessary.Written 23 April 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JHLSeoul, South Korea8,839 contributionsThis is a waterfall flowing from the stream and meeting the sea.
The observation point is walkable distance from the bus stop #87 鯛ノ川(Tainokawa). It's a short track of 10~15 min.
Most visitors often stop their cars nearby to watch this for minutes.Written 18 March 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
