We have stayed here, in a cabin, many times on our cross-country skiing trips to Vuokatti. The best thing about the stay is always the complete getaway character. In the privacy of your own cabin half each cabin is double, one side a one-bedroom unit, the other side a two-bedroom) you can enjoy your own sauna after cross-country skiing, watch TV if there happens to be an English (and/or in our case German) movie, cook your meals, read, sleep, surf. W-LAN in the cabins is the newest feature and it works well. It's important to know that most of the people using Vuokatinhovi are Finns who are there with their own car. To do grocery shopping without a car, you need to either take a bus to Sotkamo (they run four times a day) or use your back pack and the cross-country trail (hilly trail, 7 kilometers) to go to the supermarket in Sotkamo. Sometimes when we do this it occurs to me that if we as Europeans (or North Americans) always had to fetch everything we eat this way, there would not only be fewer problems with overweight, but also fewer heart attacks, diabetics, etc. etc.! There is grocery shopping in Vuokatti itself but not as easy to access without a car. Vuokatinhovi provides buffet meals (not always, only when the finnish school holidays are on) which are not really to my taste but nevertheless we have them often (when too lazy to cook). We have not tried the a la carte. Other restaurants are within walking distance (10-20 minutes). At Vuokatinhovi not everyone speaks English, but those who do are usually available. To reach Vuokatti without a car, you need to take a train or plane to Kajaani, then a bus which lets you off directly at Vuokatinhovi. Vuokatti itself is a paradise for cross-country skiers. The many tracks, from 5 to 30 kilometers long in all kinds of variations, are extremely well kept up and so well laid out that, if you are an experienced skier, you can always let go downhill without braking. Many of the tracks are well suited for beginners, but there are also many challenging ones. Near the end of February and in March is the best time to go, as far as temperature is concerned - earlier in the winter it can get extremely cold.…
