At many hotels, you are asked to leave a deposit in case of unforeseen cleaning expenses caused by guests who smoke in room or cause undue messes/damages skipping out on the bill. The hotel usually does this via a credit card but if you don't have/use one they will take a cash one. At this hotel I don't know what that amount might be.

I had book a large room for 5 people 2 months in advance and I received a phone call saying that it was given away to a guest that had booked it recently from the 2 nights that I had planed to stay till the end of the summer what is the policy on the long term guest vs. the "walk" guest. just so I have the details.
I guess my first thing to ask you is did they give you another choice of rooms? I do not personally know what the hotel policy is on long-term guests but find your situation a little upsetting (having your booking cancelled when it was planned and confirmed 2 months in advance). Please call the hotel and find out the policy then deal with it once you have the facts. I am a bit curious to know as well because this is the hotel that I use when I stay in Sault Ste. Marie. I am really sorry that I could not be more helpful. But I will acquaint myself with there policies just so I can be prepared for any situations such as yours. Hope you get a satisfactory resolution.
