Melbourne, Australia1 contribution
I've travelled extensively in Australia and Asia and stayed in a range of hotels from budget to premium. This was my first time staying in a Hilton hotel and I'm still shocked that it's the worst hotel stay I've ever had. I flew into Sydney to catch up with a good friend who was in town for work and booked three nights at the Hilton as a treat to myself. The location is perfect (and I say this as an ex-Sydney local) though I had trouble finding the entrance even though I knew exactly where the hotel was. All the signage on the street is for the bars and restaurants with zero focus on the Hilton hotel itself. This focus is something I noticed throughout my stay. I ended up walking right through the carpark (in the middle of the carpark road) and had to call the hotel's phone number to ask for directions. Check-in was fast though felt like ordering something at McDonalds. Entire staff seem to be under the age of 25. Zero senior/experienced staff on hand. I was directed in the general direction of the elevators which was confusing as there's actually two elevator sections. My first room was 2108, a corner room which I thought would be good to avoid noisy neighbours. Big mistake as that entire floor is also just above the Arthouse Hotel's roof (the building next door) which is covered in air vents that continuously blasted my window. Someone else described the experience as trying to sleep on an airplane and that's exactly what it felt like. Insanely noisy. Hilton needs to invest in high quality sound insulation and windows for that entire floor ASAP. The king bed was just two mattresses pushed together. One was lower than the other. The pillows were essentially six sandbags that no one in their right mind would find comfortable. They also didn't breathe so caused my face to heat up within 10 minutes lying on one. The doona was soft to lie on but SUPER hot to sleep under. Even with the aircon set to 17C and the room itself made really cold. The noise, poor pillows, and inappropriate doona resulted in a sleepless night. At around 5AM I tried to call the front desk and request earplugs but the room phone didn't work (The "dial MAGIC" thing is also incredibly confusing and condescending) so I had to call Hilton HQ via my iPhone. The plugs came in 20mins. At 6AM I went down to the front desk and told the front desk about the noise, bad pillows, and hot doona. I also mentioned that the phone was broken as were the dimming lights next to the bed. I was told that I should have used their "Pillow Service" to customise the "Pillow Experience". I had no idea what this was despite reading up on the hotel before my stay, reading all the pamphlets in the room after checking in, and reading all I could of the in-room TV menus. Turned out this pillow info was hidden in a sub-menu. I was told I could change rooms at 10AM. At 11AM I called the front desk (again from iPhone) to ask about the change and was told that someone was coming up now. They didn't arrive until 90 MINUTES LATER. During this wait time I cancelled all my morning plans due to having to deal with a basic room change and my mental and physical exhaustion. The staff member eventually arrived and he was genuinely charming and polite, the best staff member I encountered during my stay. Give Yudai a raise and promotion ASAP. The new room was 13 floors higher, Room 3405, and it was LOADS better. Clearly cleaner, better maintained, and completely quiet. It did have a door to a joining room but thankfully next door was empty during my stay. Two "micro fibre" pillows were on the bed. They were much more comfortable but also pretty hot after a while. This room had the same type of down feather doona as the other room so I guess Hilton doesn't have any bedding for guests who have a healthy body temperature. I was given an extra basic sheet though which I ended up sleeping under with the doona again on the floor. Suggestion: Offer cotton pillows and doonas as they can breathe and don't overheat. According to my Fitbit tracker, the amount of sleep I had during my three days at the Hilton were 2hrs, 5hrs, and 3hrs. Usually took me until after 4AM to get this little amount of rest. Sleep quality should be the primary focus of a hotel and Hilton Sydney completely failed here. I would have changed hotels if my booking was refundable (it wasn't). Also, the dimming lights and phone in the new room were also broken. The room was VERY small with almost no room to roll out a yoga mat in the morning. For $450 per night, all of this was unacceptable. It genuinely felt like a budget 2 or 3-star hotel at times. I didn't get to try the breakfast because it ends at 10AM and I was trying to catch up on sleep at that time. Frustrating that this set me back over $50 day as an "included" benefit. I ordered a burger, a cake, and a glass of wine via room service during my first night which cost $70. Very cheap wine and burger. Cake was fine. Hard to recommend. In retrospect, I wish I was given the option to swap out breakfast for a room service coupon or something. Didn't try the "fitness centre" as it was literally "Go to the Fitness First gym next door." Note that any fitness or gym features mentioned in the Hilton Sydney listing is just random things at the chain gym next door. Hilton itself doesn't actually offer yoga classes or anything. Also didn't try the bars (think there were two) as I simply didn't have the passion for it after being so sleep-deprived. As a whole, Hilton Sydney gives the vibe of a company trying to save on expenses by cutting back in as many areas as possible from quality of bedding and room maintenance to hiring kids instead of experienced mature hotel managers and crew. It's genuinely a 3-star experience and in desperate need of a refresh on every level. What I experienced would be fine for a $100-150 per night hotel. Totally unforgivable for an apparent 5-star luxury hotel brand charging over $400 for a basic room.

Hotel's Favourite
This review is not really just about my excellent stay, but the relationship between Hilton staff and the general public There is a good reason why I’m not in hotel hospitality as I can’t deal with arrogant and obnoxious members of public I witnessed a complaint from a woman who came into the exec lounge late just before closing, apparently she had done the same several times prior. She started shouting so that everybody else could hear about her need for a drink, blaming not knowing about the standard exec room drinking hours served between 5-7 (despite not remembering on previous visits, being told at checkin, not accessing the messaging app or simply not asking anyone at all). Poor Jonathan, attending to service in the lounge that night, took the brunt of it all and tactfully tried to explain the policy, even apologised, but in the end had to give in for the sake of maintaining public relations and to prevent the issue from escalating. When Jonathan left the area she quickly dashed off out of the lounge with both glass and drink in hand,… I could never be hired to work at Hilton because I would have personally throw these people out of the door without opening it. I’d just like to say two things in case she leaves a bad review.. as these types of people usually do I really hopes she reads this and knows how disgusted she should be with herself, i.e. being absorbed into her own self importance, shouting and making an arrogant fool of herself. Secondly, much praise to Jonathan and the rest of the team for dealing with such a disrespectful members of the public that just dont like to follow rules that everybody else seems to easily follow…. Well done everybody, from reception to lounge staff…. and thanks again for a brilliant stay. Alan

We arrived at the hotel at 8:30, after a 16 hour long flight and they got us in our room right away, so we could rest right away. We had booked a Sydney bridge climb for that evening. The restaurant was great where we shared a burger and fries and a beer. The included breakfast the next morning was over the top! The room was clean and beautiful. They offered to hold our bags until they could get us a room, and then offered to hold them the next day, after we checked out and while we toured the city. The tap on/ tap off streetcar goes along the front of the hotel. It’s a 15 minute walk to the Rocks area. Great stay!

Great location! Near the water and walking distance to multiple stores. Grocery stores, shopping centers, and places to eat. Also, close to the train from and to the airport. Rooms were very clean, and the bathrooms had updated features. Velvet parking was a little bit pricey $$, but if you were to park in the other lots, $$$.

Five stars is so much more than just surroundings… We made a non refundable booking for three nights over the Taylor Swift concert weekend.. An unforeseen weather occurrence resulted in all flights to Sydney cancelled for the first night of our stay .. clearly out of our control. The third party booking was made through booking.com whereby our position was understood and agreed that a refund was appropriate for the one nights accommodation but told ultimately the decision lay with Hilton Sydney management.. This is where the 5 stars drops to 1 .. their position was “bad luck , booking was non-refundable and we remain unwilling to change… Ok that’s fine … my position keep the money and we will never stay in a Hilton property again.. Very poor customer service!!

Stayed here 3 nights during the week to experience Sydney on points as a Gold Honors member. Location is excellent, being close to shops, bridge, restaurants, tourist attractions, etc. Concierge service was excellent throughout, being very helpful throughout. Front desk service was less so - having checked in online and being unable to select our room, I left a message asking if they could select a quiet room away from road noise, noisy areas including lifts. We arrived at 1.30pm on a not very busy Wednesday afternoon, to be told that there were no rooms available for us to get into until 3pm - even as a priority customer! I hassled and I was told 15mins later they could then offer me the same room as previously assigned on the 21st. rather than 26th. floor of a 50 floor hotel, saying there would be little difference in quietness - so we accepted. The rooms are big, but old and not all facilities work well. Ours was on the corner and was nice and large with a lovely bed and shower, but the TV had few features and interrupting signal plus the air conditioning was troublesome. We used the leisure facilities - good gym and swimming pool, but the steam room and saunas were not hot and a lot of the lockers didn’t work. Sleeping was not enjoyable, since we found that the road noise was significant with the trams operating throughout the night and ‘beeping’ every time they stopped outside the hotel - and we were placed above them! We were also woken up at 7am by drilling occurring close to us on the same floor. I then asked for us to be moved to a quieter room and was told they would do so - we were moved to floor 25 being told our room type only goes to floor 26… ! We had the same issue with that room - clearly the sound insulation in the rooms and windows is poor, since we also could we could easily hear the guest next door when he coughed and sighed. Also we found that the air conditioning could not be altered to increase the white noise to help us sleep. So overall, from the hundreds of Hiltons I have stayed at, this was one of the worst sleeping experiences I have had - the hotel needs to improve the sound insulation enormously as sleep quality this is the No. 1 priority for customer experience…. Also it needs to improve the front desk customer orientation - maybe learn a few lessons from the concierge…

We had an excellent stay (again …the previous one being 39 years ago!). It is a large city hotel with friendly and helpful staff (not impersonal as one might expect). Only our check-in person wasn’t particularly welcoming. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel is nicely situated with the historic QVB across the street as well as a Light Rail stop. We enjoyed the Executive Lounge and its lovely staff. The gym to which Hilton guests have access is amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed staying there!

My wife booked a deluxe twin room 3 and half months ago and it stated it would have a bath in it but after waiting for nearly 1 hour to book in they did not have the room that she booked. She got a room with no bath and all they did was apologize and gave her 2 drink vouchers. How far in advance do you need to book to get the room that you want. We will stay at the hyatt or the grace hotel in future.

The room was great, and cleaned very well and there was even turn down service! The location was excellent. All employees were very helpful. Shout out to Miguel!!! On the first night we checked in we were given the right keys, but told the wrong room. It was straightened out quickly. The Executive Lounge was great and we had four amazing breakfasts there. We are staying again at the end of February.
