Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Ate here and food was OK although my chicken stir fry was very salty. Shocked at the prices €43 for a fillet steak. €33 for beef stroganoff. €27 for chicken stir fry. What the hell is that about. Cheaper to go to a Michelin star restaurant and have a 3 course good meal. Won't return because of prices.

After having travelled from England in my EV car and experiencing trouble using EV chargers (thus resulting in all of my cars cancelled) I stopped outside the Shirley Arms to try the charger opposite the hotel. It’s at this point I knew my cards were cancelled and the previous charger was not the problem. Faced with. 2 hour drive with no charge, I decided to ask for a room at the hotel. I met with a lovely lady who listened to unfortunate tale and instantly offered to use her card to pay for electricity for my car to help me out of my sticky situation - what an amazing woman! Her kindness was incredible! I asked for a room, and they were fully booked, although 5 mins later - she ran out to the car park to say that she had found one for me. This kind and wonderful lady relieved my anxiety of being stranded 100’s of miles away from my home in Bognor Regis in England, and made me feel totally at home. I bought a beer (which a credit card worked for a beer and the hotel on chip and pin), knowing that I had not eaten, she also gave me peanuts to eat!! She also made sure that I had a vegan breakfast ready for me earlier than the restaurant opened, the following morning! This was exceptional service and a master class in how to be an awesome human being - I am still in awe of how someone can be so kind and genuine! Her name starts with D and it was a Lithuanian or Latvian name. Best experience ever - I certainly will return, even though it would be out of my way! Thank you D x

This is a fantastic friendly hotel. Met by an excellent receptionist who was super welcoming. Very clean hotel with spacious rooms. Staying for a family wedding the food, the staff and the atmosphere were all first class. Breakfast again an excellent served to the table event with exquisite produce. Worth a visit as this is a gem of a place.

Shirley Arms hospitality is warm, friendly & so genuine . Our room was huge & our bed & pillows the best we’ve had since travelling. Unfortunately the shower was very poor. Food was great in the dining room - stick with local produce always. Perfectly located right in central Carrickmacross.

Food awful for price you are paying. Arrived shortly after 3 had to have bar menu we had wanted a turkey ham dinner but no you must order from this ridiculous priced menu. Ordered chicken stir fry omg I got a bowl of chicken broth disgusting I assumed this would come out sizzling but came out in soup bowl like soup yes there was chicken in it but taste was awful no flavour with tiny bowl of rice on the side and about 8 chips in another tiny bowl for euro 24.50 my friend got Thai chicken in a soup bowl also and 2 tiny wee bowls one chip one rice again not much flavour. Heard people nxt to me givin out about the service they were told there’s communion on and chef is busy so don’t take peoples hard earned money if kitchen gets to busy just say we don’t have availability right now so I can go and spend my money on something that is eatable

As a local, the Shirley Arms was my go to when dining out! While the food is fabulous, the prices are extortionate!! I don't mind paying bit extra for good food but what these guys charge is ridiculous! I know the price of everything has gone up but not this much! The food is fabulous but prices absolutely crazy!

A warm and welcoming hotel. A beautiful front where you can enter the hotel through the bar. Large free secure car park at rear with another entrance to the hotel. Check in was swift and efficient. The rooms are big , warm ( needed to be) , with all the extras that you need when travelling wether on business or pleasure. No traffic noise . Large bright bathroom with a decent shower. A very good breakfast , with plenty of choices . I did stay there once before , November 2021, and it was reassuring to recognise some of the staff. Will return again. Unfair to pick out one above the rest , but , the young lady managing the breakfast on Sunday was exceptional. I have stayed in many hotels all over the world often as a solo traveller but she was the first to ask , are you waiting for someone else to join you for breakfast before taking my order for the cooked breakfast.
