The room has decent amenities, but it wasn’t thoroughly cleaned. I found pieces of candy around the desk, crumbs in the chair, hair all over one of the beds and nightstands, and liquid spill stains. Here for a sporting event this evening, and the doors are all locked after 8 pm.
I arrived late and had to check in at Mowbray Hall. The guy at the desk was less than friendly but perhaps hotel check-in is not his favorite part of working in the Office of Public Safety. Entering through the back door of the Union isn't the easiest -- you don't have access to the elevator and must climb three floors of steep cement stairs with your bags. The room itself was positively adequate. The bed was comfortable. Nice micro-fridge combo. The bathroom was clean and stocked with towels, soap, hair dryer. The TV had every channel I wanted. But I tried to turn on the heat and it smelled so bad it gave me a headache. Now it could be that I was the first to use the heat this year (I was there last weekend in September), but it creeped me out. Still, it was cheap and safe and comfortable for one night. If I wasn't a slave to Amtrak when I visit my Leatherneck (which means I must arrive after 8:00 PM), I'd still stay here again. I'd just ratchet down my expectations.…
I am generally easy to please, but this hotel stay was a study in frustration. The room is very clean- it smells kind of musty like bowling alley, but there's nothing visibly dirty about the room and the linens feel fresh. The windows don't really open, and don't stay open, so you can't really air the room out. The room has a mini coffee maker with 2 cups, a telephone to make local calls on, an ice bucket, a television with cable and a clean-remote, lamps with charging outlets, an alarm clock, 4 dresser drawers, a mini-fridge, and a microwave. The only faucet is in the restroom. The view is of the WIU campus. Check-out is 11am, there is no breakfast other than what's offered in the food court. Keys to rooms are physical keys, not key cards, and doorknobs are spherical, not accessibility levers. The shower is the kind with a very narrow head, which I've seen almost exclusively in locker rooms. This is fine, but the water pressure is intense. The shower also makes a loud banging noise every time it's started, so don't try to take a quiet shower while your partner sleeps. There is an option for taking a bath. The hotel provides Goat's Milk Soap only, so if you're vegan or allergic to dairy products, bring your own, or you're SOL. They also don't provide any hair conditioner or lotion. Just "conditioning shampoo". The rooms are advertised as having free wifi, but only the lobby really gets reception. The lobby is a student food court. Also in order to connect, you have to download a special file.. which is a bit odd (If the network doesn't even require a password why not just have open wifi? The whole process for trying to get connected is incredibly convoluted.. you also have to provide a phone number or email address). I had to ask the front desk girl to tinker with it (which took 20-30 minutes) before it'd work in the lobby, and then once I got to my room, nothing- no wifi. The front desk said that this wasn't normal, and that there are about two days per semester where the wifi is completely down and there's nothing anyone can do about it.. SOL. If you don't have cellular reception on your phone in town, you can't even get to the login screen for the wifi. You can try restarting your device to fix this. The front desk person also mentioned that IT isn't here on weekends to fix problems like this, and that if it wasn't to our satisfaction we could check out (not be refunded- check out early).. so again SOL. It also seems that on weekends, the front desk is here from 8a - 8p, and there is no management/ supervisor on site to help with anything beyond simple check ins/outs. They've really let this student worker out high and dry with poor resources to manage a hotel and I feel bad for anyone in this position. Our front desk person was really trying to be helpful but unable to do much. I really wouldn't call it a hotel, so much as "guest dorms".. the experience was somewhat stressful rather than recharging.…
I have lived and worked in the area many years. I know that this hotel is clean! The rooms are comfortable, not fancy, but comfortable. There is a Burger King in the building so able to catch fast food with just an elevator ride. Center of the University, so if your here to visit a student nice choice.
