I booked the room online. We generally look for an inexpensive motel and have often been pleasantly surprised We couldn't check in because the office door was locked. I tried calling and got an answering machine. There were some people there who appeared to be living there and they didn't know anything about where we might find a manager. One of the tenants appeared to have insect bite marks all over her arms and legs and that frightened me a bit. The whole place seemed very run down and, frankly, seemed unsafe. I can put up with some discomfort to save some money but I just couldn't stay there.
Mt. Pleasant is exactly half way between my starting point in Iowa and the mid-day wedding I was attending in St. Louis, so it seemed the ideal place to stop. I don't need much, so I found the low price appealing. I read the online reviews which were generally positive, mentioning a spacious room, an updated room, and friendly staff, with the only drawbacks being a poorly maintained parking lot and the AC unit over the bed. On Google images I saw a picture of an updated room, as well as rooms that had not been updated, and I hoped for the best. I was, unfortunately, disappointed. The room was very spacious, but that's the only positive I can come up with. Yes, the parking lot needed attention; a fresh coat of asphalt would do wonders, but they would have to pick up quite a bit of trash first. I did not have an updated room, although I think the toilet had been replaced at some point. It was the nicest thing in the room. The carpet in the room was not only thread-bare, but filthy. I wore flip-flops the entire time, even on the dirty floor in the tiled bathroom. Most of the light bulbs in the room did not work. I couldn't really tell if the sink was actually dirty or if it simply suffered from an unusual amount of wear. The grout around the tub and the shower curtain both had visible mildew. I had already concluded this was the worst hotel room I have ever stayed in when I discovered that the shower didn't work. I pulled up on the lever to turn it on, and it pulled right out. I requested a partial refund and got a paltry 10% back. Do yourself a favor and book something else.…
We booked this motel and we did not expect much for the low price. We were surprised on how spacious teh motel was and relatively clean. We had the double room and it had a tv, two couches and a cabinet for storing clothes. It seems from the look of it that it is mainly used by ppl as a long term stay type of motel. The only drawbacks that I saw was the lack of maintenance to the parking lot and the loud window AC over the bed.
We were passing through this lovely Iowa town and looking for a place to spend the night when we happened upon the Heidelburg. We were pleasantly surprised. The room had been updated. It was clean and we had a good night's rest. The only negatives were the parking lot needed some spring cleaning and there was the occasional train whistle. I slept right through them. At most I dreamed of trains! Friendly owner and all at a very reasonable price. There is a place in the world for these types of motels and the Heidelburg does that group proud.
